Windows Home Server 2011 released to manufacturers

windows home server 2011 whs
Just a little under two months after its release candidate went live, Windows Home Server (WHS) 2011 has been finalized and released into the wild. The new version of Microsoft's slick, do-it-all server OS is a big step forward from its predecessor.

Built on the Windows Server 2008 R2 base, Home Server 2011 features a simpler dashboard, a better backup solution, dead simple remote access to your home computers, and Silverlight-powered remote media streaming. For a more detailed look at what's new in Windows Home Server 2011, you check out Microsoft's official breakdown.

Drive Extender, of course, didn't resurface for the final release of WHS 2011 and that's something a lot of power users are still pretty irked about. Even without Extender, Windows Home Server offers a boatload of useful functionality and might be a good fit for your home network. Manufacturers have already begun building hardware, so you should be able to pick up a device in the very near future.

An evaluation download for Windows Home Server 2011 will be made available in April -- we'll let you know when the links are ready.

Apple updates Pages, Keynote and Numbers iOS apps, brings increased compatibility with iWork and Office

Still toying with that new Gmail for iOS update? Sure you are. Meanwhile, Apple's updated a trio of its own apps -- Pages, Keynote and Numbers all headed to v1.7 today, which the company says will make "working with others and sharing documents easier through increased compatibility with iWork for Mac and Microsoft Office." Other new features include enhanced support for slide sizes, themes, and action builds in Keynote; change tracking in Pages; and hide and unhide rows and columns in Numbers. We've reached out for specifics regarding that "compatibility" bit, but for now, you can hit the source links to ogle those changelogs.

Shot Shot Pirate is a fun, simple physics game

shotshotpirate
Shot Shot Pirate is very satisfying, because each level is short and to the point. You know what you have to do and you just do it.

As you may have gathered from the name, you're cast in the role of a pirate. Your goal is to shoot at a diamond and make it fall off a tower of bricks. The height of the tower changes as you progress through the levels. It's not enough to just make the diamond fall off the tower of bricks - it has to fall below a certain line (drawn on the screen) for the level to be completed.

There are also different kinds of bricks, with some heavier than others, and different kinds of ammo. You only get a certain amount of ammo for each level, and when it's gone, you lose. But don't worry! If you don't make it on the first try, it's very easy to restart the level and just give it another shot (or three).

All in all it's a cute game. I've seen similar games with better graphics and music, but the game delivers on its main promise - a few minutes of pure time wasting!

You might learn something with this Stirling engine model

If you ever wanted to turn the heat from your cup of tea or coffee into piston power, I have just the gadget for you. It’s a Low Temperature Differential Stirling engine model. Invented by Robert Stirling back in 1816, this engine produces power from temperature differences. You can place it on top of something warm or cold like a cup of tea, cup of ice, the hood of your car, computer, etc and it will spin. If you’re in to Steampunk type gizmos, this would be a fun addition to a collection, that will actually work. You can find complete models and kits on Amazon at different prices ranges, or if you’d rather go completely DIY, check out this how-to article from MAKE magazine.
