Microsoft rolls out stockpile of Xbox Live apps for North American and European gamers

Microsoft rolls out a stockpile of international Xbox Live apps

This afternoon, Microsoft's Larry Hryb (aka Major Nelson) announced the availability of several new Xbox Live apps for gamers across the globe. Customers in the good old US of A can add Rhapsody and Blip.TV to their menu of fine media streaming cuisine. Canadian Xbox Live subscribers now have access to both IGN and French entertainment site TOU.TV; merci beaucoup! Customers in Germany picked up Amazon's LoveFilm movie streaming service, while folks in the UK received an update for the application that makes finding content easier. Rounding out the Xbox Live world tour is the Netherlands, where subscribers can now scoop up the RTL XL app for quick access to the network's programming. Before you install that shiny new tile to your console's dashboard, it should be noted that most of these apps require paid subscriptions -- but you probably knew that already.

Facebook for BlackBerry v3.3 now integrates BBM

Facebook for BlackBerry v33 now integrates BBM

It's a red letter day for BlackBerry-owning Facebookers, as version 3.3 of the platform's native app has arrived. BBM has been woven deep into the update, enabling you to initiate chats and find friends using your pin contacts. Of course, if you do that, you might find yourself friending too many people who share the minutiae of their lives -- so the Zuck has also added easy un-friending to the mix as well. You can snag the update from the BlackBerry App World, which we've thoughtfully added for you down at the source link.

Amazon Cloud Player review: functional, not mind blowing, and still US-only

Amazon Android Cloud Player appIt's hard to believe: our world-spanning network, our Internet, which is the cornerstone of free speech and free society -- which, on a good day, is capable of causing populist revolutions -- is still crippled by banal geolocation restrictions. We are, of course, talking about Amazon's two latest offerings, both of which are only available in the United States. Last week it was the excellent Android Appstore for Android, and today it's the Amazon Cloud Player for Web and Android.

Along with Cloud Player, Amazon also launched Cloud Drive, which is basically just like any other cloud storage digital locker. It's not particularly feature rich, and there's no real reason to use it over something like SugarSync or SkyDrive -- it does work outside the US, however.

Its primary purpose, as far as we're concerned, is that it stores your your Cloud Player music in a subdirectory. You get 5GB of Cloud Drive storage for free, and then it's $1 per gigabyte per year if you need more space.

The Amazon Cloud Player itself will not, to put it bluntly, blow your mind. It works, but it's very much an early, and possibly rushed, release. Let's dive in to the Web and Android players for a closer look.

This Is the Modem World: Review Sites Are Broken

Each week Joshua Fruhlinger contributes This is the Modem World, a column dedicated to exploring the culture of consumer technology.

DNP This Is the Modem World Review Sites Are Broken

I'm about to walk into my favorite restaurant in the world. The food is yummy, healthy and fits my budget. The staff knows my name and rarely has to ask how I'd like something served. And the location couldn't be better. It's the perfect place.

But before I can pass the threshold to nosh nirvana, a stranger on his way out gives me a sideways glance and whispers, "This place is horrible. Don't bother."

This place? My place? The best restaurant on earth? How can this be? Perhaps something has changed. Did the chef leave? Is the cute hostess gone? Have I been wrong this whole time?

But I have faith. I follow through, and the best restaurant in the world is still just that, just as I remembered.

Wave Control Pro: Smartphone Wizardry Worthy of Obi-Wan

It's the holidays, and if your Android smartphone is feeling a bit neglected, I've got the perfect gift for it. Forget automating your life with remote-controlled garage door openers, motorized big-screen TV mounts, and electrically driven drapes -- that's all so last-century. Controlling your phone with a wave of your hand is where it's at this holiday, in my opinion. Get the kids a Furby, Wii-U, Lego's Ninjago Epic Dragon Battle or whatever, and get yourself touch-less media control. It's hours of fun.

Europe Joins Free Internet Chorus

The European Union announced on Friday that it would oppose attempts to increase regulation of the Internet at a United Nations conference that will take place next week in Dubai. This move comes as some countries have called for tighter rules on Web service providers and phone operators. The International Telecommunications Union, an agency within the United Nations, is hosting the World Conference on International Telecommunications beginning Monday. The goal of the event is to update the International Telecommunications Regulations, a decades-old treaty.

Yahoo! Messenger now censors the links you share

Yahoo Messenger Big Brother censorshipWe've all thought it, but never dared think it could be true: what if Microsoft, Yahoo, and AOL actively monitor our instant messenger chats? What if mentions of 'bomb' and 'underage' are tracked and sent to law enforcement agencies? What if chat providers don't agree with the things we say, or the links we share, and filter or censor the content of our transmitted messages?

Well, it looks like our fears may actually have some basis in reality: Yahoo Messenger strips FilesTube links from instant messages. It doesn't tell either party that a URL has been removed from chat -- it just deletes it. Poof. FilesTube, in case you were wondering, is one of the largest file hosting meta search engines on the Web -- it indexes RapidShare, Megaupload, Mediafire, and many other 'cyberlocker' services.

It's fairly obvious why FilesTube links are being removed -- the Censor General at Yahoo is probably one of those perplexed primates who think all uses of BitTorrent are illegal -- but this situation poses a far more important question: is Yahoo censoring messages on the client side, or the server side. Does the messenger client itself maintain a list of 'blacklisted' words -- and if so, why are we not told that FilesTube links are banned? What other words and terms does Yahoo protect us from?

Qualcomm announces cheap, battery efficient NFC chip, hopes to put it in phones next year

Qualcomm announces cheap, battery efficient NFC chip, hopes to put it in phones next year

Near field communication might be all the rage at the checkout counter, but there are still plenty of devices shirking the technology. Qualcomm subsidiary Qualcomm Atheros hopes to change that, announcing an ultra-low power NFC chip that might help OEMs cut costs. The QCA1990 boasts a footprint half the size of contemporary chips, and claims support for antennas eight times smaller than today's standards -- offering manufacturers, by Qualcomm's estimation, a large enough savings to make NFC integration viable for more devices. The hardware is built to work seamlessly with the Snapdragon S4, too, and features special polling algorithms designed to minimize battery drain.

There's no guarantee the chip will make its way into Cupertino's next handset, but Qualcomm seems optimistic about its place in the market. "Qualcomm intends to be at the forefront of delivering simple, easy-to-use solutions to OEM partners," states vice president of product management David Favreau, "By enabling client devices, Qualcomm Atheros is paving the way for rapid adoption of products that incorporate NFC technology." Manufacturer samples ship out early next year, and the final chip should be in consumer devices by Q3. More internal chips, less sticker goop. Sounds good to us.
