What Happens When You Tie a Knot in the Middle of a Zipline

Our crazy awesome friend DevinSuperTramp and his gang of crazier and even more awesome friends came up with ways to make a zipline ever more fun: tying a knot in the middle of the line, running two people at once to catapult a person and trying as many insane tricks with skis as possible. More »

Banshee music player now works in Windows, supports Amazon MP3 downloads

A few moments ago, version 2 of the Banshee music player for Linux was released, bringing with it a whole slew of new features, and the addition of an official -- but alpha-quality -- Windows build. The Mac OS X build of version 2 is due later today.

The most notable new feature is support for the Amazon MP3 store -- you can buy and download music from within Banshee -- but unfortunately it's only available in the Linux build at the moment (OS X and Windows support are planned, however). There have also been some significant improvements to artist, album, and queue interactions -- and yes, you can finally right click a track, album or artist and select 'play after' to insert it into the queue.

Beyond actual playback, the user interface has been tidied up -- it now looks a whole lot smarter -- and the Ubuntu One Music Store and SoundMenu extensions have been made official. For a complete list of changes, additions and bug fixes, check the change log.

When Windows support initially appeared in February, we found it rough around the edges and fraught with stability issues. With version 2, Banshee for Windows is still a bit unstable, but it's shaping up to be a good alternative to Winamp, iTunes, or whatever other music library manager you use. It's almost as attractive as its GNOMEish brother, too!

Install the Windows Phone 7 NoDo update regardless of your carrier

windows phone 7 nodoSome of you who own Windows Phone 7 devices are still waiting for your pre-NoDo preparation update -- never mind NoDo itself. A few workarounds have been posted, but unfortunately they didn't work unless your carrier had completed testing and was ready to schedule the update.

Now, however, the Chevron WP7 team's Chris Walshie has delivered a handy little utility that will allow you to update any Windows Phone 7 device -- regardless of your carrier.

  1. Download and install the Windows Phone Support Tool (x86 or x64) and the ChevronWP7 Updater (x86 or x64)
  2. Launch ChevronWP7 Updater and select your language. If your language isn't listed, stop and do not update.
  3. If were running WP7 build 7004 (you can verify in Zune) then run the updater twice.
Once the process completes, you should be able to copy and paste to your heart's content. Let's just hope all this update foolishness gets sorted out before we're supposed to receive Mango.

Of Course Today Is the Day to Talk About Gun Control

The entire point of technology is to work to our benefit, not against us. The entire point of being a responsible, reasoned human being is to face our failings head-on, not to hide from them. Those points seem inarguable. More »

Businesses save time and money with CDW Cloud Collaboration Services

Today’s businesses thrive on their ability to share communications and data within the organization.  Larger companies may have many business locations with employees spread out over the state, country, or even the world.  Smaller companies may not have as many locations, but they have employees who may need to conduct business while traveling or working off-site.  Modern communications take different forms – phone calls, emails, instant messaging, video conferencing, etc. – and each of those requires investments in money to purchase and maintain the systems and employee time to support them.  Time wasted while waiting for a response to an urgent email from someone who’s working off-site or playing phone tag because you can’t just IM someone for a quick answer.  Money and time that could be better spent.

CDW, a leading provider of technology products and services for businesses and government, has years of experience in providing communication and collaboration solutions to businesses of all sizes.  They’ve been providing Unified Communications solutions for years, having completed more than 4,000 Cisco Unified Communication deployments over the past decade.  They have recently introduced CDW Cloud Collaboration, which provides a tailored, integrated mix of services, including “voice and voicemail, mobility, video conferencing, contact center services, instant messaging and presence,”  which utilizes the Cloud to provide secure, flexible virtualized architecture to address drawbacks that are common to standard UC rollouts.

CDW hosts these services at their own Tier III-IV facility to provide “world-class virtualization, storage and optimization services. The components are fully redundant, offering four nines of uptime.”  They maintain the systems, freeing your IT employees up for other tasks.  CDW can work with you to determine the exact mix of services you need.  You can incorporate everything at once, or adopt services one at a time.  If you see a sudden spike in your needs, CDW can seamlessly add services.  You pay as you go for just the services you need.  You can tailor which services you use (single-number reach; ad hoc audio conferencing; mobile clients for iOS, Android, and Nokia; video and Webex conferencing; instant messaging, and others), the number of employees, and the number of devices each can use to access the collaboration services (IP Phone, desktop client, mobile client, analog device, lobby or conference room device).  CDW’s staff, including 50 Cisco Certified Internetwork experts, will help you ensure you get the services you need, when you need them, while freeing your employees from slow communications and stifled productivity.

Watch CDW’s Cloud Collaboration video, then go read the CDW’s Solutions blog to learn how CDW can solve your company’s communications and collaboration problems.

DoorBot doorbell with camera and audio let’s you see who’s at the door – no matter where you are!

With the DoorBot, you’ll be able to see, hear, and speak with a person who rings your doorbell, no matter if you’re at home, at the office, or traveling.  This device is currently seeking funding at ChristieStreet, and it is roughly 20% funded at the time of this writing, with 41 days to go in the funding period.  The DoorBot replaces a standard doorbell with a ringer button, a camera, and a speaker.  It’s connected wirelessly to your home network, and it connects with an app on your smart phone or tablet whenever someone rings.  They’ll never know where you are, because the DoorBot has no video screen, but you’ll see them and be able to talk with them.  It’s a great way to keep track of what’s happening in your primary residence or at a distant vacation home.  You can install it with just four screws.  Since no wiring is involved, you can use it at rental apartments/houses and take it with you when you move.

The DoorBot is designed to also work with the Lockitron, a device that fits over your deadbolt’s interior thumb button and let’s you check to see if your door is locked or to lock/unlock it from anywhere.  You can reserve a DoorBot for a $169.00 pledge or both a Lockitron and the DoorBot for $319.00.  Delivery, should funding be successful, is scheduled for July, 2013.

New Firefox Nightly and Aurora logos unearthed, and how to enable channel switching

Firefox Nightly and Aurora logos
Later today, Firefox will undergo its biggest developmental upheaval ever. Mozilla-central, the source of nightly builds, will be renumbered to version 5 -- and at long last, after years of wallowing around version 1, Mozilla's rendering and layout engine, Gecko, will also have its version number updated to match Firefox.

Shortly thereafter, Firefox's new channel system will be implemented. Firefox 5a2 will be introduced as the first Aurora build, and we should also see a Firefox 6 Nightly build. While we we're not sure where they came from, one Sören Hentzschel seems to have unearthed the new Nightly and Aurora logos (see above), along with new About Firefox dialogs (after the break).

In other news, if you want to take a sneak peek at the new 'channel changing' technology that will be introduced in upcoming Firefox builds, head to about:config and create a new string called app.update.desiredChannel -- the value doesn't matter. Then open Help > About Firefox and you'll be able to switch channel, but it doesn't do anything just yet (image after the break). Here's hoping that Firefox channel switching is smoother than Chrome.
