How to check the weather and get forecasts using Siri

Siri not only makes for a great digital assistant but a great weather forecaster as well. With a little help from Siri, you can make sure you're never caught without your umbrella, raincoat, snow shovel, or suntan lotion again.

How to check current weather conditions with Siri

How do you find out about the weather? Just ask Siri.

  1. Press and hold down the Home button to activate Siri.
  • Ask Siri to check the weather. For example, "What's the weather today?"
  • Tap the weather widget to go to the Weather App.

How to view a weekly weather or future forecast with Siri

If you care more about the entire weekly forecast, or a specific day of the upcoming week, you can ask Siri to show you that instead, and highlight it for you as well.

    1. Press and hold down the Home button to activate Siri.
  • Ask Siri to tell you what the weekly weather looks like. For example, "What is the forecast for this week?" or "What's the weather on Friday?"
  • How to check the weather in a different location with Siri

If you're traveling or simply care more about the weather someplace else than you do at home, Siri can give you the same information for another area.

    1. Press and hold down the Home button to activate Siri.
  • Ask Siri to tell you the weather in another location. For example, "What's the weather like in Chicago?" or "Will it be hot in San Francisco today?"
  • How to ask Siri other weather-related questions

You can also ask Siri more practical questions, like "do I need a rain jacket today". They'll call up the same weather widget, but they let you ask what you're specifically interested in finding out.

    1. Press and hold down the Home button to activate Siri.
  • Ask Siri if you need anything special to prepare for the weather. For example, "Do I need a coat today?" or "Will I I need an umbrella tomorrow?"
  • How to check sunrise and sunset times with Siri

Want to make sure you're up at the crack of dawn, or that you make it home before dusk? Siri can tell you that as well.

    1. Press and hold down the Home button to activate Siri.
  • Ask Siri to tell you when the sun is setting or rising. For example, "What time will the sun set tonight?" or "What time did the sun rise this morning?"

British royal family announces iOS and Android wedding app

William and KateTo celebrate the imminent marriage of Prince William and Kate Middleton, the Royal Collection will release an Android an iOS app that chronicles the last seven royal marriages, including Queen Victoria's marriage to Prince Albert in 1840.

Ironically, the app won't actually feature anything to do with William and Kate's marriage -- rather, it will focus on the "tradition, splendor and romance" that are intrinsic to British royal marriages. "[The app] will share the stories of past royal weddings and offer a wealth of historical context for the ceremony on April 29."

Unfortunately, the app, which has been lumbered with the fantastically creative name of 'Royal App,' won't be available until April 18 -- just 11 days before Kate's big day. It won't be free, either: it'll cost the rather princely sum of £1.79, or three of your Tea Party-loving dollars. The money will go to the Royal Collection, though, which is a good cause!

Google Play Gift Cards get one step closer to UK availability

    Android Central

Following yesterday's discovery of a redeem page on the Google Play website for Gift Card codes in the UK, we took that to mean that the Gift Cards were on their way to British shores. Today we have further reason to believe that their arrival may well be imminent.

Tucked away in the menu in our UK Play Store apps is a "Redeem" option which brings up the page we see here. Google Play balance is in the correct currency, and besides linking to redeeming your codes, there's also a link to the Gift Card TOS page. We've still not seen any UK currency gift cards in the wild as yet, but with Christmas just around the corner, these would make a great stocking stuffer for anyone who uses an Android device.

Windows 8 App Store images leaked?

    windows 8 app store
Windows 8 images continue to leak onto the Internet, despite Microsoft's wallpaper-based pleas to those with access to the early releases. Today's installment courtesy CNBeta shows the upcoming Windows App Store, which will likely feature prominently in Windows 8.

We've got our doubts about the authenticity of the image. In addition to showing several of the built-in games which already ship with Windows, Opera is listed -- and a competing browser seems like an odd inclusion this early on. Of course, with the browser ballot still in place in the EU for quite some time, Microsoft would probably need to include rivals like Opera and Firefox to stay out of trouble. We're also not sure why Clickgamer is shown beneath Angry Birds instead of Rovio -- the game's actual publisher.

It's still early, of course, so it's entirely possible that the Windows App Store image is genuine but merely using placeholder images and text for now. Anyone else thinking Windows Marketplace might be a more logical name? You know, to keep things consistent with Windows Phone and keep Apple's legal eagles at bay.

Windows 8 welcome screen revealed, looks very Metro

    windows 8 welcome screen
It's not really a secret the Microsoft had planned on bringing bits of Windows Phone 7's Metro UI to Windows 8, but we haven't seen a lot of really telling evidence. However, with the Windows 8 milestone 3 build now available to Microsoft Connect partners, it was really just a matter of time before we started to get a peek.

Thanks to Rafael Rivera and Paul Thurrott, we've now had a glimpse at what the Windows 8 welcome screen will look like. As you can see, the typography is very Metro indeed. Within Windows also mentions that the background image is customizable, and we're wondering if it might not pull from your current Windows 8 theme. This particular shot shows the CTRL + ALT + DELETE login option, but we imagine you'll still be able to log in by clicking your account picture tile as well.

Rivera and Thurrott also mention that the tablet version of the welcome screen will allow you to log in by swiping a pattern on the screen -- as you can on current Android devices.
