Sand Trap is a fun and difficult physics maze game

Sand Trap
Sand Trap is one of those games that at first seem too hard to bother with, but when you try to stop playing it you discover you're hooked.

The goal is to get as much sand as you possibly can out of the maze and into the bucket at the bottom of the screen. You need to rotate your maze every which way to get the sand rolling around it. You then try to direct the sand to one of the exits of the maze, and hopefully into the bucket. It took me several tries to actually get sand into the bucket, but that might be due to the fact that I didn't even realize the bucket was there at first. Things improved significantly after that.

As you level up, the mazes get more complicated, with moving parts and other things making your life more difficult. Once you manage to get through all these obstacles and get enough sand into your bucket, you can move on.

As I mentioned, this is not an easy game, but it's highly addictive. The graphics remind me of some long lost game from the 80s, but this just proves that you don't need super graphics and crazy sound to make a game work. There's a soothing guitar track playing in the background and that's it, as far as I could hear, and you can enjoy it just as much with no sound at all.

If you like a fun physics challenge, don't miss out on this one!

URC Introduces the MX-890 Remote Control

MX-890_lgA few weeks ago I posted a review of the Logitech Harmony Touch Universal Remote which I’ve continued using to control all my AV equipment. After an extended time using it, I’ve noticed a few things that could stand some improvement, notably the button placement… That’s why I’m really interested in URC’s latest remote, the MX-890. This high end universal remote features a color LCD that can display custom icons. The screen isn’t touch enabled, but there are hard buttons on the sides that line up with the icons on the display. When you pair the MX-890 with one of URC’s base stations, you don’t have to be in the same room as your equipment because it can control them  through walls, cabinet doors or even from outside. You can setup macros to create custom startup sequences and you’ll never have to worry about the batteries going dead because the remote has a tabletop charging cradle. The price of the URC MX-890 is $499.00 and it is shipping now. What is the most expensive remote you’ve ever purchased?

Word. Notebooks review

word-5Are you a notebook addict? Then join the club my friends. Whether you use them for keeping lists, to-dos, a journal or whatever, there’s still something wonderful about a physical paper notebook that a smartphone or computer can’t capture. My favorite pocket sized notebooks are Moleskine Cahiers and Field Notes notebooks. But now I have another brand to introduce to you: the Word. Notebook. Are they better, worse or the same as Moleskines and Field Notes? Let’s see…

word-6

Product Specs:

  • 48 pages, lined
  • 3.5″ x 5″
  • Made in the USA
  • Cover: Environment Desert Storm 120# smooth paper (100% post consumer recycled)
  • Interior: Lynx Opaque Ultra smooth white 60# text
  • Printed with Hostmann-Steinberg inks
  • Stitching wire comes from the Spiral Binding Company

Word. Notebooks are sold in packs of 3 and are  currently available in six different cover color options: Black, Orange, Natural, Traditional Camo, Tan Camo and Swedish Camo.

word-7

In the image above I’m holding (top to bottom) a Moleskine Cahier, Field Notes and a Word. Notebook. The Word. Notebooks most closely resemble Field Notes notebooks in their size and number of pages. Both are almost identical in size and have 48 pages. I did notice that the cover of the Word. Notebook feels slightly thicker than a Field Notes cover and the Word. Notebook uses 2 staples instead of 3. The Moleskine Cahier has a little bit different corner shape, 64 pages instead of 48 and is sewn instead of stapled. It also has a pocket in the back cover and several perforated pages at the back…

word-1

Inside the front cover of the Word. Notebook is a place to record your name, notes, date and contact info.

word-2

The pages themselves are white with lines printed in what looks like either pale beige or grey lines. In the left margin are circles with a dot in the center. This is the Word. Notebook’s main feature – its special task system. The inside front cover shows you how to use the system. When you make your lists you can use the center dot to denote a bullet point, a circle around the dot means the item is important, a line through the circle means the task is in process and an X through the circle means the task has been completed. This is a very simple system that is both easy to use and easy to understand as it doesn’t require a lot of thinking or deciphering.

The inside of the back cover has 10 quirky facts. I was a bit disappointed that all three of my Word. Notebooks had the same 10 facts. It would be cool if each notebook had different ones. Of course this isn’t a deal breaker.

The price of Word. Notebooks are about the same as Field Notes and Moleskine Cahiers, so choosing this notebook over the others comes down to personal preference. Do you like the camo and colored covers better than the others? Will you use the special task system? A yes to either question should be enough to give Word. Notebooks a try.

BlackBerry Messenger 6.0 screenshots leak

bbm 6
A leaked early version of RIM's upcoming BlackBerry Messenger 6 has been making the rounds since late February, but images of the new app are just now beginning to appear. Over at CrackBerry, the crew has shared a handful of images of BBM 6 in action. Unfortunately, you won't get a glimpse at a chat or file transfer -- only the profile screens (after the break) and what you see above. All that's really revealed so far is the option to set custom contact and chat colors and BlackBerry OS 6.1-style icons.

CrackBerry also warns against installing the leaked BBM 6 app. There's no guarantee this app hasn't been tampered with, and BlackBerry devices are becoming a more common target for cybercriminals.

Google demands veto on OEM Android changes, stretches definition of 'open source'

Google, according to reports from "a dozen executives working at key companies in the Android ecosystem" is finally locking down the open source and easily-fragmented Android operating system.

As it currently stands, Google hands over the 'final' code for each version of Android, and OEMs and developers then spend some time customizing the OS to fit their hardware, and to create a unique and marketable flavor. That's all set to change, however.

Over the last few months, according to several people familiar with the matter, Android licensees such as HTC, Motorola and Facebook, have been asked to sign 'non-fragmentation clauses.' This new contract caveat will give Google the right to review and pass judgment on all changes to the Android OS. Two executives at Facebook say that they're unhappy that Google gets to review its changes to Android -- which is understandable, given Facebook and Google are direct competitors -- and there have also been allegations that Google is preventing some Verizon devices from shipping because they include Microsoft's Bing instead of Google search.
