What's The Oldest Tech You Have to Deal With at Work?

When I was getting a haircut a few weeks ago, I found myself in the chair, staring at the register from behind, and I couldn't help but notice how damn old their setup was. The CRT display looked to be 15 years old at least, the keyboard chunky and probably never cleaned, and all this attached by a rats' nest of cables crowded next to the enormous tower peeking out from under the desk. Just Mobile's early2013 range AluCup, black HeadStand, AluFrame, AluPocket and Gum Max Duo

What we love about CES is that we get to see so many familiar faces in one week, and Just Mobile was one of them this year. Since our visit to its Taiwan office a few months ago, the award-winning accessory maker had been preparing several new products for CES: (from left to right in the above picture) AluCup, black HeadStand, AluFrame, AluPocket and Gum Max Duo. Starting in chronological order we have the black edition of the minimalistic aluminum HeadStand headphone stand, which will join its silver-colored sibling for the same $49.95 price tag at the end of this month. As before, the HeadStand's base comes in two layers for cable management, as well as a spun-metal finish. Check out the rest of the product range after the break.

VMware adds Mozy to its cloud and virtualization empire

mozy vmware
Mozy is one of the most popular cloud backup services around, with more than one million users storing around 70 petabytes of data. Its popularity apparently put it on the acquisition radar of VMware -- which has now made Mozy part of its virtualization empire.

VMware's official blog post makes it clear that the company wasn't so much interested in Mozy as a consumer offering. Rather, it's the inner workings of Mozy which piqued VMware's curiosity. CTO Steve Herrod says, "Over the past 5 years, Mozy has built one of the best examples of a globally distributed, large-scale cloud offering." He adds that the move will allow VMware to "further ramp our own cloud-related learning and accelerate new IP, scale, and capabilities" of its existing offerings.

Existing Mozy customers don't need to worry, of course. VMware has pledged to continue running Mozy's service without interruption.

OtterBox announces waterproof case, battery case, and their first app for iPhone

At CES 2013, OtterBox announced the Armor Series for the iPhone 4, 4S and 5, their first waterproof case in a long time. It's got plenty of padding for impact protection, including plugs for headphone and dock/Lightning port, and a non-permeable film around the speakers that can let sound out without the device getting wet. Once the tough metal clamps are in place, you can submerge your iPhone over 6 feet for half an hour, drop it from 10 feet, and blast as much dust as you want at it without any worries.

The arguably more interesting product OtterBox was showing off at the show was the Defender Series with iOn Intelligence - a new variant with an integrated backup battery and a dedicated iOS application for monitoring how much juice is left in the pack and in your iPhone. In addition to have the three layers of protection we're used to, there's also a microUSB plug to keep everything charged. There's no data pass-through, so you'll still need to take your iPhone out if you ever want to sync, but for the convenience of extra power and protection, I'd say it's worth the compromise.

The only downside is that you'll be paying a steep premium of $130 for the Defender Series with iOn Intelligence. No word on release date just yet, but it should be out sometime this spring. The Armor series OtterBox for iPhone 4, iPhone 4S, and iPhone 5 will be available February 22 for $99.95 online and at AT&T stores. Any takers? You can get a closer look at the Armor series over here.

Google Hangouts On Air go fullscreen, put hosts front and center

Even with tweaks for musicians, Google+ Hangouts On Air have had sub-par layouts for presentations and performances; one-way stream from a band or teacher crops the view to a smaller size. As of a quick update to the social network, common sense prevails. One-way performances now default to occupying the full available view; multi-participant chats can go a similar route by using the Cameraman app to push all but the primary speaker to the background. It's a simple change, but one that could make a big difference for those who just want to lean back and watch.

'Curious' Hack Jailbreaks Windows RT

A security researcher has hacked Windows RT to allow it to run desktop applications by bypassing the OS' security systems. The jailbreaking isn't dangerous to users' systems, researcher C.L. Roker insists. "It cannot at this point be exploited without the user actually wanting it, so it's not dangerous." The flaw that permitted Roker to sidestep security protections on Microsoft's Surface tablet and run Windows desktop applications on it is a vulnerability, he added.

Elephant Quest is an addictive, deep platformer

elephantquest
When someone tells me about a "platformer", my first thought is that it's probably a simple game that mainly revolves around running and jumping around, with a minimal plot. [Play a Zelda game! -Ed]

Elephant Quest is one platformer that managed to prove me completely wrong. Yes, you do run and jump around, and you also shoot at stuff. But the game has much, much more going for it.

Basically, as you run, jump and shoot, you gain experience points and level up. Hitting Space brings you into an interface where you can convert your experience points into Charisma, Intelligence, Agility and Dexterity points. Once you've "specialized" your points, you then get to pick what exact skills you'd like to enhance in each field. For example, you could use your dexterity to enhance your weapons or increase your swiftness.

The game is played in a huge maze; you go through rooms using doors, and there's a large map. As the name implies, there are quests you can take, too. For example, one quest had me searching all over the place for ten balloons.

The bottom line is that this is a surprisingly deep game that just might ensnare you for a good bit longer than you intended to play. Beware!
