Tasty Planet is a fun flash game where you eat everything in sight

tastyplanet
So this professor comes up with a new toilet cleaner that works by "eating" the dirt; or so he thinks. That's how the plot starts for Tasty Planet. You play the role of the toilet cleaner, but you're not really a toilet cleaner after all -- you're a blob of gray goo that can eat anything that's smaller than yourself.

As you chomp away, you grow -- and as you grow, you can eat bigger and bigger stuff. The first level pits you against microscopic particles; by the time I stopped playing, I got all the way to eating cats and dogs. I know that sounds disturbing, but it's a really cute game, and there's no gore or anything like that.

Supposedly you keep growing and growing until you're able to eat whole planets (hence the name). The challenge factor comes when you realize you can't touch any critter larger than yourself - you'll get "bitten" and become smaller. In the beginning you're so small, that a single touch can kill you. Later on, you're big enough that touching larger animals doesn't kill you on the spot, but it does reduce your size. Each level is timed, so if you're not large enough by the time your clock runs out, you need to start again. As long as you don't touch the larger animals, you should be fine.

All in all, a fun, addictive little game. It's available for iOS, too.

Scrabble Helper helps you improve your Words With Friends gameplay

scrabblehelper
If you play Scrabble (or a scrabble-like game) from time to time, you may want to check out Scrabble Helper. This simple website is a godsend when you're at a loss for words. Simply enter whatever letters you have, and the word you'd like to connect with. Scrabble helper comes up with a whole bunch of suggestions sorted by score.

The site lets you select one of five dictionaries - Scrabble International/US, Lexulous International/US, and Words With Friends. Some people might say this constitutes cheating -- I think if the other side knows you're doing it, it's definitely not cheating. And it doesn't take the challenge out of the game, because implementing Scrabble Helper's suggestions and deciding which words you'd like to connect with still takes a fair bit of thought.

Very handy, though perhaps not one for the Scrabble puritans in the crowd.

Balance is a challenging mouse-based physics game

balance
Years of computer use have taught us that the mouse cursor is "above" the windows. It doesn't push anything around; at least not without you clicking anything.

Balance takes that ingrained bit of knowledge and cancels it out. Suddenly your cursor (a blue dot) is solid - and if it touches the blue block, it pushes it around.

Your job is to use your cursor to nudge the blue block over to the orange block. You will have to push it, lift it and even flip it on its side, and then balance it. It's a very tricky game - one I wouldn't recommend tackling with a laptop trackpad.

Still, if you have a mouse and a hankering for a little physics gameplay, this is a cute little game. I like how the blue block never stops smiling, it makes me feel better about the world.

Canon Powershot N – Oh flip

Powershotn

Canon has just announced the Powershot N, a camera firmly aimed at the social media market.  Made to be tethered with your  smartphone or tablet, the built in WiFi allows you to connect quickly and easily with its Mobile Device Connect Button. You can then directly upload your pictures to social media sites such as YouTube, Facebook or Instagram.

Control is via a 7.1 cm (2.8″) tilt-enabled touch screen, which allows you a whole new perspective in your shooting angle (I love the fully articulated LCD viewer on my Panasonic G2 exactly for this reason) . The unit is 12.1 MP and includes an 8X optical zoom and supports a maximum ISO of 6400 for low light conditions. Take a shot in Creative Mode, and you’ll get the shot you composed plus five automatically generated alternatives with different crops and processing effects. The camera’s only 3.1″ X 2.4″ X 1.2″ (78.6 X 60.2 X 29.3 mm) when closed,  so it’s easy to slip into your pocket.  It’s also capable of taking full HD (1080p) video.

Pricing and availability is yet to be announced.

Clean Widgets receives complete overhaul in version 3.0 update

 Android CentralAndroid Central

Clean Widgets, a compilation of useful homescreen and lockscreen customizations, has received a quite notable update today to dramatically improve the look and experience of the app. The move up to a completely new point release -- version 3.0 -- brings a new design style that's cleaner with a new font and redone graphics all around. There's a new customization screen that lets you change the widget styles before placing it on the homescreen, offering very granular control. There are more improvements to be had under the hood as well, with a reduction in file size by almost 75-percent from the previous version.

There's a whole grouping of useful widgets included in the Clean Widgets app including clocks, battery monitors, toggle switches and more. Stick around after the break for a quick walkthrough of the app from the developer himself, and head to the Play Store link above if you're interested in picking up Clean Widgets for your own phone or tablet.

Google demands veto on OEM Android changes, stretches definition of 'open source'

Google, according to reports from "a dozen executives working at key companies in the Android ecosystem" is finally locking down the open source and easily-fragmented Android operating system.

As it currently stands, Google hands over the 'final' code for each version of Android, and OEMs and developers then spend some time customizing the OS to fit their hardware, and to create a unique and marketable flavor. That's all set to change, however.

Over the last few months, according to several people familiar with the matter, Android licensees such as HTC, Motorola and Facebook, have been asked to sign 'non-fragmentation clauses.' This new contract caveat will give Google the right to review and pass judgment on all changes to the Android OS. Two executives at Facebook say that they're unhappy that Google gets to review its changes to Android -- which is understandable, given Facebook and Google are direct competitors -- and there have also been allegations that Google is preventing some Verizon devices from shipping because they include Microsoft's Bing instead of Google search.

Toyota pulls Cydia theme and ads to appease Apple

Apple asks Toyota to remove jailbreak Cydia theme
In news that will no doubt shake the very bedrock of your belief system, Apple has asked Toyota to remove its Scion theme and its advertising from ModMyi, a Cydia repository. The Scion theme has been available for weeks, but after it received a ton of press in the last couple of days, Apple finally lashed out.

It's not like we should be surprised, considering Apple has claimed in the past that jailbreaking is illegal -- but at the same time, did the Cupertino cronies hear about the ruling that made circumventing DRM, and thus jailbreaking, legal? Anyway, whether Toyota was supporting illegal, legal, or deliciously gray and ambiguous, activity, it doesn't matter: Apple asked Toyota to remove the theme, and Toyota graciously bent over and capitulated.

This story raises a much more interesting topic, though: this is the first time a multinational company has publicly acknowledged and embraced the jailbreak community. Considering jailbreaking is technically legal, and Cydia's creator, Jay Freeman, estimates that up to 9% of OS devices are jailbroken, it simply makes good, commercial sense to target jailbreakers with ads. Toyota was simply trying to make some money, for shame!

As long as Apple continues to throw around its increasingly-expansive mass, the legality of jailbreaking will continue to be inconsequential. It will be interesting to see if another big company dares embrace the jailbreak community after this, too.

iPhone DIY repair: Ultimate guide to replacing the battery in your iPhone

iPhone DIY repair: Ultimate guide to replacing the battery in your iPhone

Everything you need to know to DIY (do-it-yourself) replacing a dead battery in your iPhone

If you've got an iPhone that's going on a few years old, you may notice that your battery doesn't hold a charge like it once did. That doesn't always have to mean you have to run out to buy a new iPhone. A replacement battery is actually not very costly and as luck may have it, it's one of the easiest DIY repairs when it comes to most iPhone models.

As long as you've got a little bit of patience, we can walk you through how to squeeze lots more life out of your iPhone with a brand new battery replacement.

Not comfortable with DIY repair? Leave it to the pros

If you aren't comfortable performing a DIY repair on your own, don't. It is possible to cause more damage or run into issues you aren't ready for. In this case, it's probably better to either pay the money for a replacement device from Apple or use a local or mail-in service that will handle the repair and any issues that may arise for you.

The Pod Drop has many locations in the midwest and is a rapidly growing company. You can check for a Pod Drop location near you, mail it in, or use another third party repair service. For more information on mail-in repairs or possible Pod Drop locations near you, you can visit their website.

Warning about battery replacements

When replacing a battery in your iPhone, or any electronic device for that matter, it's very important you use high quality or OEM batteries. While using aftermarket components may not be unsafe in some circumstances, a battery is a huge exception.

We recommend only using reputable suppliers for battery replacements like eTech Parts who provide not only high quality replacement parts but will warranty them against defects for at least 90 days.

You should always proceed with caution when buying replacement batteries. While a cheap price seems like a good deal, it may not be if it damages your iPhone. In this situation, you really do get what you pay for.

How to replace the battery in an iPhone 4S

The iPhone 4S is only going on over a year old but for heavy users, that's enough to start taking a toll on your battery. If you picked up an iPhone 4S fairly close to launch, you're probably out of warranty by now. If you notice your battery deteriorating and no longer holding the charge it once did, a battery replacement for the iPhone 4S only consists of about 4 screws, one clip, a few tools, and about 15 minutes of your time.

Just watch out for that tiny grounding clip underneath the battery cable. You'll need it for reassembly and it's easy to miss. Hit the link below to check out our complete guide for replacing the battery in your iPhone 4S.

How to replace the battery in an iPhone 4

While the GSM and CDMA version of the iPhone 4 are different in many repair aspects, they're actually almost the same when it comes to a battery replacement. Luckily, both battery swaps are very easy to perform as well. Not only that, they both utilize the exact same battery.

Since the iPhone 4 has only been out for a little over 2 years, a dead battery is definitely something worth replacing if your phone is in good working condition in every other aspect. If you're up to the task, hit the guide below and we'll walk you through every step of the way.

How to replace the battery in an iPhone 3G or iPhone 3GS

How to replace the battery in an iPhone 3G or iPhone 3GS

The iPhone 3G is going on almost 5 years old now while the iPhone 3GS is about 4 years old. At this point, most people probably have one laying around that has less than stellar battery life. Perhaps you use it as a standby phone or iPod or you'd like to give it to a friend, relative, or child. Regardless the reason, a battery replacement can bring new life into both the iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS.

While a replacement involves quite a few more screws than other iPhone models, it's certainly doable for anyone mildly skilled with DIY repair. If you're willing to take the time and have just a few ninja moves up your sleeve, you shouldn't have a problem.

More DIY guides and help

Whether you have a different device or aren't finding the answer you're looking for above, we may have guides that can help you fix other issues as well. If you don't see a guide that can help or can't figure out exactly what the issue is, you can always check out our mod and DIY forums for answers to many questions. If you still can't find what you're looking for, feel free to shoot an e-mail to ally@imore.com with guide suggestions and questions.
