PSX games now available in the Android Market, if you own an Xperia Play

PlayStation One games on the Android Market
If you're lucky enough to own an Xperia Play -- Sony Ericsson's new Gingerbread-powered smartphone-cum-gamepad -- you can now buy PlayStation (PSX) titles from the Android Market.

There are five titles currently available, all priced at £3.99: Syphon Filter, MediEvil, Cool Boarders 2, Destruction Derby, and Jumping Flash. They don't have an American price yet, but that will surely change once the Xperia Play launches in the States.

Two important questions remain unanswered: How big are these games? The Market descriptions say the games are only 5MB, but that sounds incredibly unlikely -- and more importantly, will it be possible to 'spoof' the Xperia Play and download PSX games onto other Gingerbread-powered phones, like the Nexus S?

In other news, the PlayStation emulator PSX4droid was recently removed from the Android Market. This obviously has nothing to do with today's release of first-party PlayStation games.

Add playback hotkeys to Amazon Cloud Player with a Chrome extension

Sure, Amazon's Cloud Player works -- as long as you're in the U.S. or willing to do some tinkering -- but it's fairly simplistic at the moment. There are plenty of features missing which we'd like to see added -- but since Cloud Player is a Web app we don't have to wait for Amazon!

Google Chrome users, for example, can add playback hotkeys with an extension called keyMazony. Once installed, you'll have keyboard control of your Amazon Cloud Player queue. keyMazony commands will work as long as you're in the same Chrome window as Cloud Player, even if its tab doesn't have focus. The key combinations are customizable as well -- just make sure you don't set up a combo that conflicts with another extension or Chrome's built-in keyboard shortcuts.

Jetbus is a retro-tastic physics game, with a bus

jetbus
Once upon a time, there used to be a DOS game with a caveman and a human powered helicopter. The caveman would shuttle around the screen, madly trying to get customers to where they wanted to go.

Jetbus is not that game, but it's obviously inspired by it. You're driving a yellow school bus which has jets. I guess the jet engine takes quite a bit of space inside the bus, because you can only pick up one person at a time.

There are several doors on the screen, each with its own number. As you pick up a person, the status bar at the bottom of the screen shows you which number door you have to take them to.

You must fly your bus carefully, because if it gets bumped around too much, you lose. You earn money on each level, and can visit the garage to buy better jets and damping, power-ups, or even a whole new vehicle.

So while this game isn't made as well as the original that inspired it, it does provide a few minutes of fun. And now, which one of you guys remembers the original and feels like pointing to it in the comments?

This week's sidebar poll: Which chip maker impressed you most at CES 2013?

CPUCES is over, we've all had a weekend to wind down and digest it all, and for mobile hardware junkies there is a lot to talk about. We saw what the big three mobile CPU builders will have to offer in 2013, and it's impressive on every front.

We started with NVIDIA, who took everything good about their current model Tegra chips and made it all one better with the Tegra 4. A quad-core A15, 72-core GPU, and LTE soft modem right on the chip shows NVIDIA is as serious in the mobile-space as they are on the desktop.

Not to be outdone (and they certainly weren't) Qualcomm announced a pair of "superchips" that should make our phones scream on benchmarks, as well as handle the newest tech like 802.11ac.

Finally, Samsung wrapped thing up with the 8-core Exynos 5 Octa. Using what's called big.LITTLE processing, Samsung thinks they can manage the blazing speed from the quad-core A15 side by using the battery-friendly quad-core A7 side for those times when you don't have the need for speed, much like NVIDIA's Tegra "4+1" design. It will be a tricky balance, and we're excited to see how well Samsung can pull it off.

Even if you're not a big processor nerd, this kind of advancement is important. The hardware is what will decide how much developers can throw in the software, and we can expect better applications to run on our phones and tablets. If you are a big processor nerd, you're loving this. Which will impress you the most -- NVIDIA's addition of LTE to their domination of mobile gaming, Qualcomm's screaming speeds and support for new tech, or Samsung's foray into the battery saving world of big.LITTLE processing?

We want to hear from everyone. Which vendor showed the most, and more importantly, showed what you're looking for in your next phone or tablet on the hardware side. Answer the poll in the sidebar to the right or after the break and let us know what you think.

Bing begins roll out of HTML5-enhanced search interface

Bing transitions
Bing's new HTML5-and-CSS3-enhanced search interface, which was first demonstrated back in September 2010 to showcase the power of IE9, has started to roll out.

The most notable addition to the new interface is is smooth page transitions -- the fade in and out -- and navigation tabs (maps, images, videos, etc.) now persistently float at the top of the page. WinRumors is also reporting that a feature reminiscent of Google Instant search is being added to Bing, with page elements smoothly transitioning in and out as you type in your search query.

If you want to try out the new Bing UI, your best bet is to set your locale to United States - English and pray that you're part of the initial roll out. Alternatively, just wait a few days until MIX 2011, Microsoft's Web developer conference, which is when the new Bing UI should be officially launched.

Samsung's 'Godiva' phone appears on blurrycam with Verizon branding, no physical keyboard

Samsung's 'Godiva' phone appears on blurrycam with Verizon branding, no keyboard

After riding into town on Snapdragon S4 benchmarks, we've now got some pictures of Samsung's incoming smartphone, one that's bound for Verizon. If you liked the curves and capacitive button quartet of the Stratosphere II, you'll probably be happy with what's on offer here too. Specifications have been cranked up to a 720p display, Android 4.1.2 (confirmed on-screen after the break) and NFC support within the back cover, although the physical keyboard hasn't made it into this model -- another death knell for the slider. We're still waiting on an official name from Verizon, likely something to do with clouds or the sky, but suspect the official word shouldn't be far off.

[Thanks, Anonymous]

Your iPhone is about to get even more “Tidy”

mesh_tidytilt_justmount_01

Last year I reported on a project running through Kickstarter called TidyTilt–an earbud cord wrap, mountable frame, and kickstand for the iPhone 4.  It was successfully funded and then some, leading the creators to launch a second Kickstarter for their latest projects: TidyTilt+ and Just Mount.

TidyTilt+ is a streamlined and enhanced version of the original TidyTilt, but created specifically for the iPhone5.  It’s now a full protective case (rather than a frame) with a magnetized panel available in nonslip fabric or leather in a variety of colors.  The case provides easy access to all the ports, buttons, and the camera, while offering top notch protection and organization.

Just Mount is a mountable magnetized cube intended to be used in conjunction with TidyTilt.  It includes both adhesives as well as screws for mounting on just about any flat surface.  The mount can hold an iPhone in either orientation, as well as keys, pens, charging cables, kitchen knives, etc.  With the two products together, the iPhone can be placed just about anywhere for hands-free talking or storage.

This project has already met and exceeded its goal, with still over two weeks left on the campaign.  If you want to become a backer and get these products before they’re available to the public (and at a reduced cost), $19 will get you a JustMount magnetic mounting cube, $29/$39 will snag you a TidyTilt+ with fabric or leather case respectively, $45/$55 backers will get both the TidyTilt+ and the JustMount cube, and for the power backers $300 can get a customized TidyTilt+ case and JustMount cube with your name and/or logo printed on the front.

Head on  over to either Kickstarter or TT Design Labs to learn more and preorder.

Cellular versions of iPad 4 and iPad mini launching in China this Friday

Apple has just announced that the Wi-Fi + cellular versions of the iPad mini and iPad 4 will be launching in China this Friday, January 18. According to Apple

In China, iPad mini and the fourth generation iPad will be available through Apple retail stores, the Apple Online Store (www.apple.com) and select Apple Authorized Resellers.

The iPad line is currently available in more than 100 countries, but the Chinese market has become increasingly important for Apple, perhaps second only to the U.S. in short-term potential.
