Because we're all just suckers when it comes to anything Marvel, Iron Man and/or Bob Downey (and especially because Iron Man 3 looks so amazing), we can't help but enjoy watching trailers for... freaking trailers. Iron Man 3 will showcase a new trailer during the Super Bowl so Marvel decided to tease the spot by showing an adrenaline pumping, emotion inducing 15 second teaser that includes some new never before shots. iMore at Macworld|iWorld 2013: Cupertino

Wednesday morning we high-tailed it over to Moscone West to pick up our Macworld|iWorld media badges -- the big honking necklaces that grant us access to all the events we want to cover for you. Once those were squared away, we ran back to the hotel to edit the photos and videos from the MacBreak Weekly trip.

Once all of that was uploaded and posted, we got on the road and pointed ourselves towards Cupertino. Apple headquarters is about 90 minutes south of San Francisco. Nestled in the small town of Cupertino, it occupies not only what's traditionally thought of as the Apple campus, but now spills over into adjacent buildings and parts of town. That growing lack of space is no doubt a big part of the reason Apple's building a new, spaceship-style mothership.

Visitor's parking was packed, but we caught someone leaving and managed to score a space. Then we dashed into the Company Store.

Picture an Apple Store, and then add to it Apple branded clothing -- shirts, caps, jackets, etc. -- as well as pens and pencils, mugs and umbrellas, keychains and notebooks. Some things are playful "Siri, remind me to wash this shirt", or "This is the most amazing shirt we've ever made". Most just has a single, tasteful Apple logo. The Company Store is the only place in the world where you can get them, so if you're ever in the area and want a piece of Apple-cana, make sure you stop by.

We took the scenic way back, driving along the coast so Martin could take his trademark "The Stance" self-portraits along the beaches and cliffs.

Once back we met up with some fellow bloggers and friends for drinks, then briefly checked out Macworld|iWorld's media reception, then headed off to the Smile party. Smile, who makes TextExpander and PDF Pen was celebrating 10 years as a company.

There were a ton more fellow media types there, but also some longtime fans. Meeting you guys, the people who read and listen and watch and comment and participate, is the absolute best part of Macworld|iWorld and one of the major reasons I love coming to this even in particular every year.

Today the Macworld|iWorld expo opens its doors. Martin and I will be covering it as best we can for you. I'll also be on a panel called iCloud, App Stores, and other Things To Fear: Has Apple Forgotten Power Users? hosted by Macworld's Lex Friedman, with John Gruber, Paul Kafasis, and Matthew Panzarino at 1pm.

Should be a fun day. If you're here, please do say hi. If you're following along, please let me know what you want to see.

Apple announces 128GB iPad 4, available Feb. 5 starting at $799

iPad 4

Apple this morning announced new versions of the fourth-generation iPad, bringing the maximum storage level to 128 gigabytes. Same 9.7-inch retina display, same internals. Just more GBs. The upgraded storage applies to the Wi-Fi-only and Wi-Fi + Cellular versions of the iPad and doubles the previous max. Apple's senior vice president of worldwide marketing, Phil Schiller, had this to say:

“With more than 120 million iPads sold, it’s clear that customers around the world love their iPads, and everyday they are finding more great reasons to work, learn and play on their iPads rather than their old PCs. With twice the storage capacity and an unparalleled selection of over 300,000 native iPad apps, enterprises, educators and artists have even more reasons to use iPad for all their business and personal needs.”

9 to 5 Mac first reported the impending change earlier this week.

The beefier iPads will be available Feb. 5, in either black or white (or both if that's how you roll), for $799 for the Wifi model, and a whopping $929 for the cellular version.

Nokia confirms Windows Phone 7.8 coming to the UK today, prices Lumia 620 at £149.99

Nokia 620 priced at 14999 in the UK, arrives on February 6th

Brits who ground their fingers to stumps hammering their Lumia's update button will finally be able to rest, as Nokia UK has confirmed that Windows 7.8 is rolling out today. The company has also revealed O2's pricing for the Lumia 620, the handset that'll bring Windows Phone 8 to the cash-strapped masses. It's available from today on the oxygen-themed network, setting you back £149.99 or free on contracts priced over £18.50. Normally, the interchangeable back plates would cost around £20, but O2 is offering buyers a choice of a yellow, orange, green, white or cyan model for free.

You'll also be able to pick up the quirky handset from ThreeUK and Virgin Media today, although neither has opened up about pricing just yet. Vodafone has announced that it'll launch the phone on February 6th with a choice of white or black covers, while EE has yet to commit to carrying the handset. If you saw removable covers and hoped that the 620 would benefit from the same wireless charging plates we saw in the 820, we've got some bad news -- Nokia has said it's not likely to happen.

Triple Aught Design Artemis Hoodie review

tad-artemis-hoodie7

Triple Aught Design aka TAD recently offered to send me one of their Women’s Artemis Hoodies for review. I happily accepted because I’ve been wanting to try something made from Merino wool for quite a while. This particular jacket takes its name from the fearless female hunter of Greek mythology who used her bow and arrow to kill a Cyclops. Unlike Artemis, I don’t have a bow or an arrow, so I don’t know how worthy I am to wear this hoodie, but let’s check it out anyway.

Note: Images can be clicked to view a larger size.

tad-artemis-hoodie1

The Artemis Hoodie is made of 100% Merino wool. This fiber has the benefit of being able to regulate body temperature, wick moisture,  protect against odor and is even fire retardant. It does all this while remaining lightweight and comfortable.

This jacket is available in 3 colors: Black, Charcoal Heather Grey and Loden Heather Green. I was sent the Grey version. It comes in sizes Small through Extra Large. I choose size Medium although I normally wear Small.  I was told that the jacket was designed with a snug fit, so I ordered the next larger size in case I wanted to wear it over another shirt. I found that even the Medium size was a little too snug (mainly in the arms) to comfortably wear over a long sleeved knit top. So for most of my testing, I ended up wearing it with nothing underneath. Surprisingly, I didn’t find it to be scratchy or itchy against my skin like you would think wool might be. It’s actually really comfortable to wear.

It looks nice too. It features a flattering shape as the sides don’t go straight down like normal unisex hoodie jackets. This one has tapered with princess style seams.  The sleeves have a double thickness of material from the inside wrist up past the elbows for added durability.

tad-artemis-hoodie2

TAD’s Aero style hood lays flat on your back when it’s not protecting your head and the YKK zipper works smoothly.

Note: the hood doesn’t have a drawstring to cinch it around your face.

See the TAD logo peeking out from under the hood in the picture above? That tag (along with another one) is the only branding on this jacket. So if you hate feeling like a billboard, this jacket takes care of that problem.

The 2nd tag inside the jacket has cleaning instructions. I was surprised to see that this jacket can be machine washed and does not require dry cleaning. You can’t dry it in the dryer though, it has to be dried flat. But another advantage of Merino wool is that it dries really quickly.

tad-artemis-hoodie3

The back edge (tail) of the Artemis Hoodie is longer than the front. This helps prevent drafts from blowing up your back when you’re leaning over or squatting.

There are two pockets on the front of the jacket which are mainly good for keeping your hands warm. If you’re a really active person, I wouldn’t suggesting putting anything valuable / important in the pockets because they can’t be zipped or secured any in way. I really wish the jacket offered at least one secure pocket with a zipper or snap.

tad-artemis-hoodie4

The sleeves do not have a cuff at the wrist, but they do have a thumb hole which keeps the sleeves from riding up your arms.

tad-artemis-hoodie5

Using the thumb hole isn’t uncomfortable, but I probably wouldn’t use that feature all the time… But it might come in handy while hunting cyclops. Having sleeves ride up your arms while hunting one-eyed monsters can be a real drag.

tad-artemis-hoodie6

Like I mentioned, this jacket is meant to have a snug fit so that it acts as a 2nd skin. I never found it to be tight or restrictive though. The weave of the material allows it to stretch in all directions, so it’s always comfortable and moves with you.

My experience with Merino wool has taught me that it is warm. When I wear this jacket indoors, it’s sometimes actually too warm for me. It works great when worn outside though. I wore it under another jacket when we had single digit temps a couple weeks ago and it kept me super toasty.

The Triple Aught Design Artemis Hoodie is a high end jacket, not only due to the price, but also the construction and materials. Merino wool is expensive. There’s really no getting around that. In the past when I’ve shopped for Merino socks, I never purchased any because I figured I could get a whole bag of Hanes socks from Walmart for what one pair of Merino socks would cost me. ;) They say you get what you pay for though and I can understand that when I wear this jacket. Although I don’t hunt, hike that often or do other extreme outdoor activities, which this jacket might be suited for, I’ve enjoyed wearing it for my everyday geek activities.

Google demands veto on OEM Android changes, stretches definition of 'open source'

Google, according to reports from "a dozen executives working at key companies in the Android ecosystem" is finally locking down the open source and easily-fragmented Android operating system.

As it currently stands, Google hands over the 'final' code for each version of Android, and OEMs and developers then spend some time customizing the OS to fit their hardware, and to create a unique and marketable flavor. That's all set to change, however.

Over the last few months, according to several people familiar with the matter, Android licensees such as HTC, Motorola and Facebook, have been asked to sign 'non-fragmentation clauses.' This new contract caveat will give Google the right to review and pass judgment on all changes to the Android OS. Two executives at Facebook say that they're unhappy that Google gets to review its changes to Android -- which is understandable, given Facebook and Google are direct competitors -- and there have also been allegations that Google is preventing some Verizon devices from shipping because they include Microsoft's Bing instead of Google search.

New Firefox Nightly and Aurora logos unearthed, and how to enable channel switching

Firefox Nightly and Aurora logos
Later today, Firefox will undergo its biggest developmental upheaval ever. Mozilla-central, the source of nightly builds, will be renumbered to version 5 -- and at long last, after years of wallowing around version 1, Mozilla's rendering and layout engine, Gecko, will also have its version number updated to match Firefox.

Shortly thereafter, Firefox's new channel system will be implemented. Firefox 5a2 will be introduced as the first Aurora build, and we should also see a Firefox 6 Nightly build. While we we're not sure where they came from, one Sören Hentzschel seems to have unearthed the new Nightly and Aurora logos (see above), along with new About Firefox dialogs (after the break).

In other news, if you want to take a sneak peek at the new 'channel changing' technology that will be introduced in upcoming Firefox builds, head to about:config and create a new string called app.update.desiredChannel -- the value doesn't matter. Then open Help > About Firefox and you'll be able to switch channel, but it doesn't do anything just yet (image after the break). Here's hoping that Firefox channel switching is smoother than Chrome.

iPhone continues to dominate AT&T; the rest is Android?

AT&T Logo

AT&T has just posted its Q4 2012 earnings, showing strong growth in both wireless and wireline businesses. We'll be focusing here on the wireless business, naturally, so let's get right into the notable points:

Some 10.2 million smartphones were activated in the final three months of the year, the carrier said. Of that, 8.6 million were iPhones. AT&T didn't break down how much of the remaining 16 percent of sales were Android phones, but it did mention that our fare platform had its best-ever quarter.

More of the financial stuff is after the break.
