Internet Explorer 6 usage in the US dips below one percent, Microsoft celebrates with a t-shirt

It looks like the web browser that wouldn't die is finally on its last legs. While it's not quite dead yet (especially when you consider the worldwide usage figures), use of Internet Explorer 6 in the United States has now officially dropped below one percent for the first time, which is apparently good enough for Microsoft to do a bit of celebrating. It's now sending out shirts like the one above to select folks, who can now wear their disdain for the out-of-date browser. Those interested can find the latest worldwide numbers at the source links below.

Shooting Challenge: Creative Sunshine Macros [Video]

Magazine-quality studio macro shots are gorgeous. Small objects with exquisite detail and perfect lighting. Well, what's so insane about those photos is that they can be duplicated at high noon with nothing more than the sun and a foil reflector. More »

Cloud Girlfriend will use a swarm of females to satisfy men

The social network Cloud Girlfriend
Cloud Girlfriend, despite what it sounds like, doesn't really have anything to do with cloud computing. Rather, it uses a cloud of women to pose as your girlfriend on Facebook, or your favorite social network of choice. The service is scheduled to launch 'soon,' and there's no indication of how much it will cost.

With the tagline 'The easiest way to get a girlfriend is to already have one,' Cloud Girlfriend promises to be a very interesting startup indeed. The brains of the operation, David Fuhriman, speaking to CNET, says it's all about fulfilling Maslow's hierarchy of needs. "CloudGirlfriend.com can fulfill Maslow's higher needs, even though the users know that the interaction is virtual. They will interact with a real person and see real profile images of the girl with whom they interact. This interaction can build confidence and esteem as well as provide real training experiences in navigating a friendship and a relationship."

Our concern, of course, is that it's very nearly April 1. We're also worried by the fact that Fuhriman has a name that sounds ominously like a social subculture that we've grown strangely attracted to here in the Download Squad bunker.

Finally, just stop and think about it for a second. Because your cloud girlfriend will be entirely virtual, she could be based anywhere. She could be underage -- or overage -- or she might be someone who you know in real life. She could even be a relative of yours, and you'd never know.

Let's not forget this is the Internet we're talking about, folks. Worst case scenario, she could turn out to be a hairy, male truck driver from Texas. Such as... your dad, perhaps?

Farragomate is a social fridge magnet game where you make up sentences

farragomate
You know those fridge magnet kits composed of a whole bunch of words? The ones you put all over your fridge door and then try to arrange into all sorts of juvenile and/or amusing sentences. Well, Farragomate is the social, webby version of that very same pastime.

You get to play with a bunch of random strangers in real-time, and make up sentences out of a pre-set collection of words, including some fairly naughty ones, and all players' nicknames. As you can imagine, some of the results are not child-friendly.

There are ten rounds to a game. Once a round is done, players get to vote for their favorite sentence from that round. You can't vote for your own creation, of course. There's in-game chat, too.

I think the vocabulary could be made a bit more eclectic, but even as it is, it's a nice way to spend a few minutes and meet random strangers on the Internet (always a thrilling experience).

Transformer Prime root tool Nachoroot packaged into a simple method

Transformer Prime root

For those of you who want to root your ASUS Transformer Prime but don't want all the muss and fuss of command lines, the Nachoroot method has been nicely pacakged into a little executable file that will take the typing out of the equation. We'd still recommend at least reading through the manual method -- it's important to know how and why things work -- but this little ViperMOD Primer Tool indeed makes thing easier.

Note that we're talking root access, not bootloader unlocking here, and the ViperMOD tool is Windows-only for now. That'll still come from ASUS itself.

Amazon's Silk Browser hacked to work with Cyanogenmod

Android Central

The Silk browser on the Amazon Kindle Fire may or may not be to everyone's liking, but that hasn't stopped the community efforts to port it across to other devices. The ever helpful folks over at the XDA forums have successfully managed to port the browser to work with the Cyanogenmod custom ROM.

It's been tested on a number of different devices, including the Motorola Atrix and Droid X. There are more than a few different choices in the browser stakes that would probably be a better choice than Silk, but such tinkering is one of the reasons we all love Android as much as we do. If you fancy trying it out for yourselves, hit the source link for the lowdown.
