Watch an iPad Survive a Freefall From Space [Video]

G-Form has put iPads through some serious torture in the name of, err, angular yellow iPad cases? Whatever. This is an iPad (and a Go-Pro!) falling from over 100,000 feet—high enough to see the curvature of the Earth and the black of space. More »

Moog cuts the bull, reveals Minitaur analogue synth (video)

What's that noise? The sound of a thousand synth-lovers' hearts melting. Why? Because the godfather of bass, Moog, has just raised the muleta on its forthcoming analogue Minitaur bass synth. Inspired by the legendary Taurus range of pedals, the Minitaur (get it?) doles up low-frequency loveliness via two square / saw oscillators and Moog's notorious "ladder filter," imparting its distinctive character on all that passes through it. The retro pots and metal casing scream vintage authenticity, but it's not all about looking back. Sure, the Minitaur might accept old skool CV signals, but it also does MIDI over USB, so its small understated footprint will fit-in just fine, whatever your set-up. With a $679 price tag when it launches in spring, it'll cause more damage to your bass cones than your wallet. Check the videos after the jump to see the beast in action.

Teens May Not Be as Tin-Eared as We Previously Thought [Audio]

Conventional wisdom dictates that people, especially the younger ones, have ruined their appreciation for the deep, rich, crisp sound that previous generations of music fans saw as the holy grail. However, conventional wisdom isn't always wise. More »

Magellan unveils Switch, Switch Up GPS watches for runners, swimmers, extremists

Magellan is tossing its hat into the sporty ring today, with the Switch and Switch Up -- a pair of GPS watches designed for number-crunching runners, cyclists and other endurance enthusiasts. Boasting a petite, 1.26-inch display, these petite devices allows joggers to monitor and record their distance, pace and elevation, thanks to a sensitive GPS receiver that promises an accuracy range of between three and five meters. Its onboard ANT+ wireless technology, meanwhile, provides biometric and performance data culled from an optional heart rate monitor or a variety of other accessories, including bike sensors and power meters. Swimmers can take solace in the fact that the Switch is water resistant at depths of up to 50 meters, while truly hardcore Ironmen and women will be happy to know that they'll be able to store up to 60 hours' worth of data on the watch, which promises up to eight hours of battery life while in workout mode. The Switch Up, pictured above, offers many of the same benefits, but features a vibration-based alert system and ships with a multi-sport mount for bikers and triathletes. Magellan has yet to announce a release date for these watches, though the Switch will be priced at $250, or $300 with the heart rate monitor. As for the Switch Up, it'll cost you $300 (including the accompanying Multisport Mounting Kit) or $350, if bundled with the monitor. Head past the break for an extra image of the Switch.

Cobra Vedetta speed trap detectors and CXT two-way radios make for a manly drive

There's a traffic cop on the road ahead and he's just waiting to slap a fine on your speed-freakin' self. But it's cool: Cobra's new Vedetta range of radar/laser detectors will tell you to hit the brakes 30 percent sooner than the previous XRS models, and they additionally come with 2.4-inch LCD displays, the ability to mount almost anywhere on your windscreen or dash, plus optional integrated GPS and access the company's AURA database of known speed traps. Soon as you're back down to 50MPH, you can warn the rest of your undercover convoy to do the same, thanks to the new Cobra CXT two-way radio line-up featuring a range up to 35 miles, NOAA Weather Radio and a dedicated button for crude one-liners. Read on for the press releases, but don't expect much detail on pricing or availability -- at least until CES rolls around.

SK Telecom announces heterogeneous wireless technology, 100Mbps from your current networks

Mobile network operator SK Telecom plans to set the airwaves above its corner of the Pacific Rim ablaze with its latest announcement, heterogeneous wireless networks. Leveraging a combination of 3G, LTE and WiFi, the company is promising to deliver wireless speeds of up to 100Mbps to its customers. The network technology, which SK states is the "first of its kind," can provide downlink speeds that are equivalent to the sum of two independent networks. The carrier will be rolling out the 3G and WiFi portion of this network mashup (60Mbps theoretical maximum) during the second half of 2012, with LTE and WiFi (100Mbps theoretical maximum) coming in 2013. A new handset is -- unfortunately -- required to leverage this new bit-smashing technology, but SK Telecom has said it will include heterogeneous network compatibility in all handsets launching in 2013. Hopefully this is one of those things that will not take its time crossing the Pacific and landing Stateside. The full press release is awaiting your scrutiny after the break.

TiVo Premiere update brings HD guide, multi-room streaming, more (Update: Android remote app too!)

TiVo Permiere HD Guide
It's too early to know if this is the big TiVo update fans have been waiting for since the release of the Premiere, but there's no doubt it's a significant one. For starters, the guide has finally gotten the upgraded HD treatment -- no word if it is the only remaining old screen to get refreshed. Next up is official Premiere-to-Premiere streaming, which frees your recorded TV to be watched in any room of the house, even if the content is marked Copy Once. Other notable improvements include the integration of Hulu Plus content in TiVo search results, a revamped discover bar that actually discloses why the content is featured -- we assume this will make it more useful -- and hitting select while watching live TV now brings up a mini-guide and updated program info screen. All in all it is a nice list, but the truth will be told once some have had a chance to try it out. When that might be is still somewhat unknown, but feel free to force your Premiere to connect to TiVo service now to find out if you are in the lucky few to be the first to get the update.

Update: We've got one more surprise treat for you, as a reader alerted us the official TiVo Remote app is now available in the Android Market. It claims to be compatible with phones and 7-inch tablets running Android 2.1 and up, so YMMV. Grab it at the link below, and if you've just got to get this update as soon as possible, follow @TiVoDesign on Twitter and then email in your service number for the chance of a priority update. [Thanks, @DanJacobsen!]
