Windows Home Server 2011 released to manufacturers

windows home server 2011 whs
Just a little under two months after its release candidate went live, Windows Home Server (WHS) 2011 has been finalized and released into the wild. The new version of Microsoft's slick, do-it-all server OS is a big step forward from its predecessor.

Built on the Windows Server 2008 R2 base, Home Server 2011 features a simpler dashboard, a better backup solution, dead simple remote access to your home computers, and Silverlight-powered remote media streaming. For a more detailed look at what's new in Windows Home Server 2011, you check out Microsoft's official breakdown.

Drive Extender, of course, didn't resurface for the final release of WHS 2011 and that's something a lot of power users are still pretty irked about. Even without Extender, Windows Home Server offers a boatload of useful functionality and might be a good fit for your home network. Manufacturers have already begun building hardware, so you should be able to pick up a device in the very near future.

An evaluation download for Windows Home Server 2011 will be made available in April -- we'll let you know when the links are ready.

Intuit GoPayment Goes International With Canada Launch; Redesigns Mobile Credit Card Reader

intuitIntuit is announcing major news this evening around its mobile credit card swiping device and Square-competitor GoPayment reader. Intuit is one of the first major U.S. mobile payments readers to go international, with a launch in Canada. And Intuit is debuting a newly, redesigned sleek version of its reader. Launched two years ago, GoPayment offers a complimentary app and credit card reader to allow small businesses to conduct charges via their smartphones. GoPayment is available for iOS, Android and Blackberry phones and similar to Square's device, the card reader simply plugs into the audio jack of a phone or tablet. The credit card data is also encrypted, (and never stored on the phone).

Hands-on with the Motorola Droid RAZR MAXX

Motorola Droid RAZR MAXX

One of our biggest worries in our review of the Motorola Droid RAZR was with the non-removable battery. A 1780 mAh power source that can't be replaced on a power-hungry 4G LTE device is just asking for trouble.

That fear has been addressed with the new Motorola Droid RAZR MAXX. In a nutshell, you've got a slightly thicker Droid RAZR with nearly double the battery life of the orginal RAZR thanks to a 3300 mAh battery.

Now, normally when you have that kind of capacity, you've also got an unsightly wart or huge humpback that makes you embarrassed to take the phone out of your pocket. But the Droid RAZR MAXX beefs up in style, adding just a milimeter or so of thickness. In fact, if you stare at the two phones long enough, you start to forget which is which.

Otherwise, same old (excellent) RAZR. Hope you early adopters aren't kicking yourselves too much right now.

We've got a full hands-on after the break.

Google bids $900 million for Nortel's patents to protect against litigation trolls

Nortel, once one of the biggest telecoms company in the world but now in the death throes of bankruptcy, has selected Google's $900 million bid for its patent portfolio as the stalking horse bid. This doesn't mean that Google will automatically win Nortel's massive array of telecoms patents, but it does mean that Google is the preferred buyer.

Google, which has a history of lobbying for patent law reform, has been the target of many patent litigation suits. Google's relative infancy means that it has a lot less patents in the vault than big-hitters like Microsoft, Oracle and IBM, and buying Nortel's portfolio of 6,000 patents could provide better protection against patent litigation in the future. It's worth noting that both Apple and RIM have showed interested in the portfolio, too.

Mashable speculates that the patents -- which are nearly all telecoms-related -- will be used to defend against Oracle's attacks on Android's use of Java. We reckon that Google is simply looking to cover its future endeavors in the world of networking. In the absence of patent law reform, and continued threats to net neutrality, owning a bunch of telecoms patents sounds like a very sensible move.

Gemini drops two new FirstMix USB DJ controllers, helps you get your foot in the club

Gemini unveiled the original FirstMix last year and now it's just introduced two more models for the beginner DJ. The FirstMix I/O looks little more than a revision of the original, with some minor aesthetic tweaks, although we've not yet been given full specs for a proper comparison. The FirstMix Pro, however, definitely brings a little more to the DJ booth. We spy what appears to be three hot-cue buttons on each deck, expandable to six via a shift function, as well what looks like a three channel EQ. Loop-in and out buttons also make an appearance, along with -- most significantly -- a 3.5mm headphone jack, which suggests a built-in sound interface for pre-cueing. Gemini wants $129.95 for the FirstMix I/O and $199.95 for the FirstMix Pro and both come bundled with MixVibes LE. Fans of the original can now pick it up for a reduced $79.99. Check the PR after the break for the run-down.

Microsoft Brings In The Tweet Choir To Soulify Its Last Keynote

tweetchoirMicrosoft must have feared that the annual "airing of the modest success" they bring to CES every year might not be exciting enough to satisfy the many CES attendees who were expecting something major for what may very well be their last keynote (at least for a while). So they brought out the Tweet Chorus. What is the Tweet Chorus? It's exactly what you think. Unless you think it's a bunch of birds.
