Ask DLS: What's your favorite mobile app at the moment?

askdls
The mobile app marketplace is exploding; there are now hundreds of thousands of apps on the iOS, Android and BlackBerry app markets. Heck, even Windows Phone 7 just crossed the 10,000 mark!

But alas, not all apps are created equal; some are way, way better than others. Which leads me to today's Ask DLS question: What is your favorite mobile app at the moment?

We don't necessarily mean the latest craze; we'd like to hear about apps that have stood the test of time on your device, apps that are among the first you install on a new smartphones, apps that have earned their place on your home screen and in your heart.

So, what are some of these apps? Bonus points for links to screenshots in the comments!

Imagination Technologies unveils G6200 and G6400, first two GPUs based on PowerVR Series6

First announced in February of last year, Imagination Technologies has officially announced the licensing availability of its first two GPUs based on the Series6 platform. The PowerVR G6200 and G6400 each promise to bring low power graphics to unprecedented levels and are said to deliver up to 20 times more horsepower than the current generation while also being five times more efficient. In tangible terms, the Series6 GPU cores are capable of exceeding 100 gigaflops and are said to approach the teraflop range. All chipsets based on Series6 are backward compatible with Series5 and fully support OpenGL 3.x, 4.x and ES, along with OpenCL 1.x and DirectX 10. Further, specific models will also support DirectX 11.1 with full WHQL compliance. Poised to shake up the mobile gaming ecosystem, Imagination has already lined up partners that include ST-Ericsson, Texas Instruments, Renesas Electronics and MediaTek. The full PR, complete with all the bragging, can be found after the break.

March 31 is World Backup Day 2011

World Backup Day 2011
Those benevolent armchair philanthropist Redditors are at it again! Four days ago a 'self' post extolling the potential virtues of a Backup Day exploded with 2500 upvotes and 1000 comments -- and now World Backup Day 2011 is actually happening.

On March 31, as part of the global data-saving initiative, you are encouraged to back up all of your cherished photos and videos, and important documents. If you've ever had a hard disk fail, and not had a backup to fall back on, you'll know that it's a bit like losing a sizable fragment of your soul. If you've never backed up your important files -- or if you only back up sporadically -- do it on World Backup Day!

It's not hard to back up your data, either. A 2TB drive costs only a fistful of dollars, and it takes just a few minutes to set SyncToy for Windows, or Time Machine for Mac, to mirror your data every night. If you prefer a cloud-based solution, there's always SugarSync and Dropbox. Finally, don't forget that Bundlelytic has a charity giveaway for three excellent data-backup-and-recovery tools -- $160 of software for only $25, and 100% of the proceeds to go the Japanese Red Cross.

For even more backup options, for Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux, check our list of 13 great backup programs.

Orange UK announce their own Android tablet, naming theme continues

Android Central

This, ladies and gentlemen, is Orange UK's first venture into the world of Android tablets. Following on from their own label smartphones the San Francisco, Monte Carlo and company, this ones called the Orange Tahiti, and is available across the UK from today.

The 7-inch tablet is packing a dual core 1.2GHz Qualcomm processor, a 5MP camera, and compatibility with the Orange 3G+ network as well as MicroSD support and HDMI-out. Storage is limited to 8GB, and the RAM is a mere 512MB. It comes with Android 3.2, which isn't that surprising, and at the moment theres no mention of if or when we'll be seeing Ice Cream Sandwich on the Tahiti.

Orange will be hoping to catch a few eyes with the price. The Tahiti comes in at just £69.99 on a 24 -month contract at £25 a month. The data allowances aren't that great though, with just 1GB of anytime data and 1GB of "quiet time" data per month for your £25.

Tamaggo 360-imager teams up with your PC or phone to take 360-degree panoramic pictures

There's a lot of ways to capture panoramic photos, from phone attachments for iPhone and Android to throwable camera orbs, and now there's the Tamaggo 360-imager. It's a small, 7 ounce, 14-megapixel camera that can capture fully viewable 360 degree images using built-in panamorph technology -- which allows users to navigate, zoom and crop images as soon as they're snapped. The device is controlled using its 2-inch LCD touchscreen, and charges its Li-polymer battery via mini USB, which it also uses to connect to your PC. Bluetooth's onboard to connect your phone, and WiFi's there to allow for easy photo sharing on email and social networks. The 360-imager will be available in Q2 of 2012 for $200, and stay tuned -- we'll be seeing the thing in person here at CES.

Popular Like Voxer

Screen Shot 2012-01-10 at 9.22.58 AMBack in late November I wrote about a walkie-talkie mobile app called Voxer that had looked like it was starting to break into the big leagues of mobile communication. Since then, it has, at various points passing a few competing walkie-talkie app startups... and also Facebook, Skype, and most other mobiles apps for that matter, on both iOS and Android. It's been among the top three top apps in the social networking category on both iOS and Android over the past month and a half or so here in the US. That's included the #1 spot on iOS for 25 of those days and #1 on Android for 22 of them. It's also regularly been in the top 25 overall in the app stores, only getting temporarily displaced by a rash of heavily marketed games for a few days here and there over the holidays. Beyond app store rankings, I've also been hearing that downloads have been averaging around 200,000 per day. Company vice president of growth Gustaf Alstromer confirms this range, saying that the "number changes every day but that's in the ballpark."

Watch the New Crazy Thin Gorilla Glass 2 Somehow Survive 121 Pounds of Force [Video]

Gorilla Glass 2 is just as strong, tough and impressive as the original Gorilla Glass. Only difference? Gorilla Glass 2 is waaaaaaaay thinner at only .8mm compared to the original Gorilla Glass at 1mm. And at that size, 20% is a big freaking deal. Nothing currently has Gorilla Glass 2 but you can be sure even more anorexic thin gadgets are on their way. Thin is in, right? More »

Tizen OS exposed, apparently running on an unknown Samsung 'I9500'

An outfit called Realnorth, which claims to be frustrated by the lack of openness around the Tizen OS, has gotten its hands on the SDK and released some screenshots to prove it. If legit, they reveal a basic UI that seems to be inspired by a range of other OSs -- in addition to Tizen's progenitor, MeeGo -- while also managing to look a bit uninspired. It's hard to know whether the absence of frills like widgets is due to this being an early build, or whether it's because Tizen is intended as a lower-end OS, but either way it's too early to make any harsh judgement. Curiously, the user-agent used to grab the screenshots is listed as a "Samsung GT-I9500," which at the very least reminds us that there's a Tizen-running Sammyphone somewhere on the horizon. In fact, this could even become Bada 3.0.

Update: It turns out the screenshots are indeed legit and come from a "very early preview" of the Tizen OS that is now openly available -- see more coverage at the CNXSoft link below.

Google brings search to Your World, complete with results close to your heart

As Google presses forward with its social network initiative, it only makes sense that company famed for comprehensive search results would naturally bring Google+ along for the ride. That day is now upon us, as the juggernaut from Mountain View has officially unveiled Your World -- an addition to its search results that prioritizes content generated by you and those in your circles. Now, the company hopes it'll be much easier to find relevant photos, blog posts and contacts from the Google search bar, which includes content both public and private. In effort to keep security in check, all searches will be performed by default over SSL. Additionally, skeptics may opt-out of Your World at any time. For those looking for the best of both worlds, a toggle at the top-right of the page allows users to choose on-the-fly whether to include personalized results. It all looks quite slick -- in fact, we wouldn't be too surprised if another social networking company just threw up a little.

Words With Friends for Android updated, promises "smoother game experience"

wordswithfriends
As several of you noted in the comments to our post asking for cross-platform iOS/Android games, Words With Friends for Android does not provide the smoothest gaming experience... and that's being rather charitable.

You might be happy to hear that a couple of days ago Zynga released an update which promises to solve many of the Android-specific issues, such as notifications not popping up.

Sadly, installing the update is not a smooth experience; you have to manually uninstall the previous version, and then go to the Android Market and install it. What's nice is that it doesn't lose your saved games - this screenshot shows a game I've started before the update and continued after updating.

How's the new update working out for you? Let us know in the comments!
