March 31 is World Backup Day 2011

World Backup Day 2011
Those benevolent armchair philanthropist Redditors are at it again! Four days ago a 'self' post extolling the potential virtues of a Backup Day exploded with 2500 upvotes and 1000 comments -- and now World Backup Day 2011 is actually happening.

On March 31, as part of the global data-saving initiative, you are encouraged to back up all of your cherished photos and videos, and important documents. If you've ever had a hard disk fail, and not had a backup to fall back on, you'll know that it's a bit like losing a sizable fragment of your soul. If you've never backed up your important files -- or if you only back up sporadically -- do it on World Backup Day!

It's not hard to back up your data, either. A 2TB drive costs only a fistful of dollars, and it takes just a few minutes to set SyncToy for Windows, or Time Machine for Mac, to mirror your data every night. If you prefer a cloud-based solution, there's always SugarSync and Dropbox. Finally, don't forget that Bundlelytic has a charity giveaway for three excellent data-backup-and-recovery tools -- $160 of software for only $25, and 100% of the proceeds to go the Japanese Red Cross.

For even more backup options, for Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux, check our list of 13 great backup programs.

Bill Maher Piles On the Foxconn Shame-Fest [Video]

Bill Maher interviewed Mike Daisey last week on Real Time, adding to the scourge of recent negative publicity surrounding the conditions at Apple supplier Foxconn. Daisey is the actor who wrote and performed the one-man show The Agony and Ecstasy of Steve Jobs, a musing that faces the labor issue head-on. He actually went to China and talked to workers outside the infamous Foxconn factory in Shenzhen. More »

Rdio Android app gets a refresh, adds ICS support and new design
Tune streaming service Rdio has just given its Android application a major makeover. Not only will the app experience the Ice Cream Sandwich treatment for the first time (happy, GNex owners?), but it's also gotten a new look that's easier on the eyes. Furthermore, Rdio added the ability to view user profiles, and also enhanced the app's search capabilities. Amongst the rest of the improvements -- some of which are being ported from the desktop client -- are traits like top charts, recommendations and new releases. You can grab the free update now if you're a current subscriber, otherwise you'll have to jump on board before you can take the app for a spin.

LG taps actor Edward Norton, model Daria Werbowy to rep PRADA phone by LG 3.0

LG Prada 3.0

A high-end fasion phone needs high-end spokespersons, no? LG has scored actor Edward Norton (The People vs. Larry Flynt, American History X, Fight Club, The Incredible Hulk) and model Daria Werbowy to be the faces of the PRADA phone by LG 3.0.

It's a good-looking phone, as you've no-doubt seen from our hands-on with it in London last year, and now it's got a couple of good-looking (and talented, natch) faces to go with it. Said LG in a news release:

Both individuals embody the core values behind the PRADA phone by LG 3.0 – stylish looks and smart functionality. Both are stars who have excelled in their fields and represent the ethos of style and substance; Norton is an Academy Award-nominated actor, whilst Werbowy holds the record for opening and closing the most catwalk shows in one season, as well as being one of the top earning models of recent years.

The PRADA 3.0 is the latest collaboration between the fasion name and the Korean manufacturer. The smartphone features a 4.3-inch NOVA display at 480x800 resolution, a dual-core TI OMAP 4430 processor at 1GHz, 8GB of on-board storage, an 8MP camera with autofocus and a unique black-and-white user interface.

That doesn't do much for bringing the PRADA 3.0 to the United States anytime soon, but it's now available in the UK for around £430 ($670).

Late night poll: Do you stream music?

Slacker

There's a lot of choice for playing your music on Android.  For every option that plays music from your local storage, there's one that pulls music from the cloud and streams it.  Both have their advantages, as well as disadvantages.  Streaming can play havoc on your battery and your data allotment, but the almost limitless catalog of tunes is pretty handy.  Conversely, it takes less juice and no data connection to play from your device itself, but you're working with limited space.

Personally, I do both.  I keep four or five of my favorite albums on my phone, and I use Google Music to stream the rest of my collection.  What about you?  Let us know in the poll!

Personal Activity Monitor tracks time you spend using desktop apps

personalactivitymonitor
Up until a couple of years ago, I used to turn to RescueTime to figure out how I spend my time online. Then it got too complex, and I stopped using it. Personal Activity Monitor is like a vastly dumbed-down version of RescueTime, and I mean that as a compliment. It's free and bare-bones -- all it does is track what applications you're using and for how long.

A big drawback at this point is that it doesn't integrate with Web browsers to help you analyze how you spend your time on the Web. Still, if your work doesn't require constant Web app use, knowing how long you've used a browser overall might be enough to help you manage your time.

This is far from the only application in this space -- alternatives such as Slife and Chrometa are full-featured and impressive -- but PAM is good option for those who want a nice, simple tracker.

Nokia confirms white Lumia 800, shipping without pigment this month
Nokia does love teasing us with its albino-hued special editions, and so it did with the white Lumia 800 back in December. Now that phone is following the color-free road to retail later this month. Other than the eye-pleasing lack of color the phone looks to be identical to its rather more chromatic predecessors, with a 3.7-inch AMOLED display up front and a 1.4GHz processor inside. It looks good, but it just leaves us with one question: how long will we have to wait for a white Lumia 900?

Update: According to Nokia's Conversations blog, the phone will launch first in these countries: UK, Germany, France, Italy, Spain, Netherlands, Scandinavia, Finland, Poland and Switzerland.
