White House gets behind online 'bill of rights,' companies to adopt 'do not track'

White House
President Obama is throwing his weight behind a consumer bill of rights that includes protections against online companies in particular, and aims to safeguard customer privacy. While the plan doesn't come prepackaged with a new set of laws for companies to abide by, the Commerce Department is working to develop enforceable policies with help from the concerned parties. The bedrock of the new bill of rights is that consumers should have control over the kind of data companies collect and what they do with it. Internet firms would have to be transparent about what information is gathered and how it's used. There is also a call for limitations on the use of certain personal data. As part of the push a number of major players in the field, including Google, have agreed to include a "Do Not Track" button in their browsers and to honor the system -- the latter being a tiny detail that has made implementations of the feature ineffective until now. Hit up the source links for a few more details.

Boomshine is a soothing-yet-frustrating time waster

boomshine
One click; just one single well-aimed click. That's all you get in Boomshine.

That single click triggers a chain reaction; circles start exploding, and other circles colliding with the shockwaves explode as well, creating their own shockwaves, which then catch other circles.

It's been done before, yes, but this one is a great iteration. The soundtrack is mellow, with lots of piano and some nice percussion (not electronic - it sounds like drums).

At each level you need to make a certain number of circles explode to go on to the next level. I got up to level 12, where you get 60 circles and need to make 55 of them explode. And then I kept trying and trying, but simply couldn't get it. I did get to 54 circles a couple of times, but as they say, you don't get points for trying.

There's no time limit, so you can carefully study the pattern of motion and place your click at the exact right place to create the best chain reaction. I've found that clicking near the middle of the screen works quite well, especially if the balls are slowly moving in that direction. By the time the first shockwave dies off, the oncoming balls usually hit it and the chain reaction continues.

What level did you reach? Screenshots please!

Netflix locks up Academy Award nominated exclusives from The Weinstein Company

If you're looking for more content to watch on Netflix's Watch Instantly streaming service -- especially since all those Starz movies are exiting stage left at month's end -- we have good news, as it just announced a multi-year exclusive deal with The Weinstein Company. The agreement covers foreign language, documentary and "certain other movies" that will be watchable in their pay-TV window only on Netflix, and not HBO or Showtime. That includes such high profile selections as The Artist, which is nominated for 17 Academy Awards this weekend and Best Documentary nominated Undefeated, as well as other flicks like Coriolanus and The Intouchables. Of course, this is still Netflix so while fans of subtitles and exposés may be sated, The Weinstein Company's more mainstream flicks and Dimension Films releases like Scream 4 aren't included, as they're still Showtime exclusives due to the deal it signed with the channel back in '08. Either way, more movies is more movies and you can check out all the details in the press release after the break, hopefully this deal works out better than HD DVD's exclusive Weinstein pact did back in the day.

This Is How Condoms Are Made and Tested [Video]

Condoms exist in that uncomfortable category of things we accept as part of everyday life, but don't spend too much thinking—much less talking—about. That's silly. To help break the ice, here's a stimulating look at how Trojan condoms are made, because you really shouldn't put anything on your (or your partner's) junk without knowing where it comes from. I have reviewed a half dozen or so cases for my iPhone 4, and thus far, prefer using my smartphone with only Crimson screen protectors applied to protect it. With that, I do not like my iPhone rattling around in either my front or back pockets, either. In my case, having it hanging by my [...]

Ubuntu for Android

Ubuntu for Andorid

Check out our Ubuntu for Android forums!

Many a sleepless night has been spent by Android hackers getting Ubuntu to run natively on our Android devices. It's hard work, but fun and the end result is something super-functional as well as super-cool. The folks at Canonical, the minds behind Ubuntu, think so, too. That's why they did it the right way, and have announced Ubuntu for Android.  This isn't some janky, twisted hybrid designed by the people who make your phone. We've seen that, and went away still wanting. This is software, from the people who write the software, specially tailored for our devices.

Imagine one device that goes with you all day, safely in your pocket, and when you stop for a while you can plug it in to an external display and have a full-blown desktop operating system, ready and able to be used as you would a normal desktop computer. All the things most folks do -- surf the Internet, answer and send e-mail, view, edit and share pictures -- it all can be done with a keyboard and mouse on the big screen. Nerds and geeks will take things to the extreme (we always do), but the average home PC user will have everything they need, without buying another expensive piece of electronics.

Since it's Linux and open-source, it's also a building base for any number of great projects. Use Ubuntu's vast software library to install all the programs you would need to have a home entertainment center running from your phone. Or use programs like Open Office to edit and share spreadsheets and all the other document you would need for work. As the hardware in our Android devices gets better and faster, you'll be able to do even more. One day, people will be able to use their Android phone running Ubuntu to write programs and apps for Android and Ubuntu. The possibilities are endless, limited only by what the hardware can handle.

There will be a learning curve involved, as most folks aren't very familiar with Ubuntu yet. That's where we come in. We have Linux geeks on staff who know the ins-and-outs and we're champing at the bit to get our hands on this one. We'll be there to answer questions, and to work out the bugs as they appear. Just keep an eye on Android Central and you can stay up-to-date on all things about Ubuntu for Android.

Google Cloud Print comes to HP ePrint printers

hp google cloud print
HP has become the first major OEM to deliver support for Google Cloud Print in retail-boxed printers. In an official release, HP announced that its ePrint-enabled printers are now fully Cloud Print compatible. Just sign in to your Google account, pick your HP ePrint device, and you're ready to fire off a print job from anywhere you've got Internet access. Well, as long as your app supports Cloud Print as well -- like Gmail and Google Docs, for example.

We're curious, though -- how many of you are still printing? Like our pals at Engadget, our printers have been mostly gathering dust for the last few years.
