Internet Explorer 9 nears 4% share on Windows 7, IE6 extinction countdown picks up steam

internet explorer 9 ie9
Microsoft has shared some news about the state of its most and least loved Web browsers -- Internet Explorer 9 and 6, respectively. Even with IE9 only recently exiting beta, Microsoft reports that 3.6% of Windows 7 users are now running the new browser (no mention of Vista... what's with that?). The post also reveals that the adoption rate is almost five times what IE8 garnered in the early going.

It's also interesting to note that there are now more than 1,000 sites utilizing Internet Explorer 9's Windows 7 integration features -- like the new desktop notification support we showed you in Hotmail.

But perhaps the best news of all is that Microsoft's IE6countdown.com now has more than 400 partners and is generating nearly two million pageviews per month, helping to lure users away from the woefully out-of-date browser. Can the end come soon enough, DS readers?

Apple’s iBook App is Brilliant

By far one of the best features of Apple’s iPad is it’s ability to access thousands of apps. It does have a great multi-orientation interface too but the fact that these apps have been designed for the iPad only means there is very little chance of finding them on any other device other than the iPhone and iPod Touch.

The applications cover a wide range of categories from entertainment to business with games, education and sports in between. Apple have thought of just about everything imaginable to be run on the iPad which means whatever a user needs, Apple’s engineers have developed an app for it.

One of the nice features is it’s iBook app which is an e-book reader. The screen size is perfect making it easy to read wherever the user happens to be at the time. Readers can adjust the background light to suit them. They can also change text size and fonts which is great because people do have their own personal preferences when it comes to fonts and text size when they are reading.

One of the best features of the iBook app is it’s graphics, the crisp clear screen with it’s high speed memory means that images appear instantly as text is being read. Reading illustrated books and graphic novels on the device is a very nice experience.

Marvel Comics even has its own e-book reader app on the device so these are easily accessible by a downloading them when you want to. Users can enlarge or minimize images by just pinching the multi-touch screen and it is very easy to navigate through the pages of Marvel comic books by simply tapping the thumbnails.

There are so many apps available on the device that users are spoilt for choice and this includes things like the Wall Street Journal as well as the New York Times, both of which created an app that is exclusive to the iPad.

Users can get apps from Apple’s App Store and again there is a special app on the iPad for users to do this easily and quickly. The iBook app comes pre-installed in the device whereas other apps like the Marvel Comic’s app have to be purchased from the App Store. Users can go to Amazon to buy the apps they need too and a. Amazon holds the record for offering the best titles around and have a greater selection than anyone else, this is one place where you’ll find everything you’ll ever need. Users have the option of previewing any books or comics before they commit to buying them which is a great advantage. Ipad owners also have one other advantage and this is to order Marvel Comics in print if they want to.

YouTube Capture now supports 1080p uploads, Google Currents 2.0 drops on iOS

Updates to both YouTube Capture and Google Currents on iOS have just hit Cupertino's App Store, bringing with them a handful of functionality and UI updates. Mountain View bumped YouTube Capture to version 1.1, adding support for 1080p uploads, improved audio syncing, detailed upload feedback and a grab bag of bug fixes and stability enhancements. If you're feeling particularly chatty after hamming it up for the camera, the refreshed app now allows for sharing to social networks. As for Google Currents, the latest update brings it to the two-dot-oh milestone with a number of UI upgrades. A new sidebar sorts editions by category for easy access and fresh controls let users swipe vertically to scan an edition or horizontally to skip to the next one. A brand-new catalog design, breaking stories from Google News and the ability to save articles by labeling them with stars round out the overhaul. Hit the source links below to give the revamped experiences a spin.

How The iPad Keeps You Connected with Wi-Fi or 3G

Apple have done a great job of marketing their iPad device. Their strategies have gone a long way in convincing consumers that the device is the best on the market when it comes to browsing the Web or watching online streaming videos. The same can be said of connecting with friends via any social networking services according to the manufacturers.

These claims are backed up with some very sophisticated apps, features and services. The overall opinion of many industry pundits is that the device is a worthy competitor to netbooks. They believe that Steve Jobs and his team did a great job in developing the iPad even though there was a lot of scepticism when it was first launched onto the market.

The device is very fast and easy to use. It has built-in, high-speed 802.11a/b/g/n Wi-Fi which makes downloading files and streaming videos a cinch. Even when there is heavy gateway traffic or too many subscribers using the network, the device copes well making the experience a pleasant one. This is all thanks to the beefed-up Safari app and the latest Wi-Fi standard the device uses.

Apple claims that Safari is the fastest browser around which makes browsing the Internet a simple task that happens at lightening speed. One of the great features the iPad offers users is it’s capability to work on Wi-Fi as well as 3G. This means users will always be able to get on the Internet wherever they happen to be and don’t have to rely on ‘hot spots’ to stay connected.

Most Internet providers these days have 3G service and this means that iPad users can seamlessly swap over from Wi-Fi to 3G in an instant when they need to without having to contact another provider in order to do so.

Whenever an iPad user comes to the end of their surfing minutes, there’s an interactive push notification that pops up to let them know they need to either upgrade to the next data plan or switch to the latest Wi-Fi standard in their vicinity. Of course it goes without saying that the device has it’s own app to monitor and manage data usage.

Pebble launches iPhone app, starts to ship first batch of smart watches

Pebble launches iPhone app, starts to ship first batch of smart watches

Pebble, the E-Paper smart watch for iPhone (and Android), has sent word that they've begun shipping their first set of orders. Before you get too excited, it's an incredibly limited shipment, less than 500 units today, with more to follow. But still, progress. Here are the production notes they emailed backers and posted on their Kickstarter page:

  • As of today, the factory is manufacturing roughly 800-1,000 Pebbles per day. We're working hard to get this up to our full capacity (2.4k per day)
  • We are shipping master cartons of Pebbles by air freight across the Pacific to our US distribution center 1-2 times per week, and 1-2 times per week to our Hong Kong distribution center which fulfills shipments to any country that isn't the US. There is a 5-7 day lag between a Pebble coming off the assembly line, and it arriving in a fulfillment center for shipping.
  • Right now, we're manufacturing in large batches of 1 colour at a time. Since black was by far the most popular colour, we started with a run of black Pebbles. I realize that this is different than what I said before...while we would have liked to be able to ship out all the colours at the exact same time, it's proven to be impossible. We're doing our best to match production of other colors as soon as possible.

To help expectant Pebble owners track their shipments, they set up http://www.ispebbleshipping.com/.

Also, the companion app for iPhone, which will let Pebble owners update software and change watch faces, just went live in the App Store.

  • Notifies you when software updates for Pebble ready to install
  • Installs and remove custom watchfaces onto your Pebble
  • Sends ping test messages to your Pebble
  • Helps you troubleshoot issues

The app is free but only works when you have the actual Pebble watch in your possession. (Though there's nothing to stop you playing around with it while you wait...)

If you ordered a Pebble, let me know which one, when it ships, and what you think of their fulfillment process so far.
