Bing Makes Triple-Column Play With New Interface Design

Microsoft unveiled an update to Bing on Thursday that strongly leverages social networks, including a redesigned interface to provide a three-column look. Responses to queries keyed into Bing will list experts and the user's friends, who can comment on the topic in the right panel. A new feature called "Snapshot" will display useful information about a specific place or topic in the middle column.

Google Takes an Autonomous Road Trip Through Nevada

Snap divorces, slot machines and Elvis impersonators are so yesterday in Nevada -- the state on Tuesday issued Google the first autonomous vehicle testing license in the United States. Google can now officially take its driverless cars for a spin in the state. However, the driverless vehicles will require one person behind the wheel and another riding shotgun in the front passenger seat.

Motorola Droid X2 updated with security patch, wireless alerts, and bug fixes

Droid X2

Just because it's not the latest hotness on the Android scene isn't a reason to let the Motorola Droid X2 wither and die on the vine, and Verizon has begun pushing out an update to Big Red's first dual-core phone. It's not a big version bump by any means, but there are a few important changes:

  • Verizon Video and VZ Navigator® 3D City are now preloaded.
  • A Google Security Patch has been added to improve the security level.
  • Purchased ringtones are now able to be saved and set.
  • Device is enabled with the Wireless Alerting System.
  • Shortcut names can be updated and saved.
  • The keyboard Input Auto Error Correction setting defaults to off.

Granted, few of us really missed not having the 3D version of VZ Navigator, but the security patch is good to have, and the wireless alerting system is an important update -- one that could end up saving your bacon. Of course, bug fixes are always welcome. If you haven't received the update notification yet, check for it via your Droid X settings.

Fry's stocks unlocked Nokia N9, is slightly misinformed about its specs

Image

Sure, Nokia's Lumia 900 and 808 PureView may have garnered much of the spotlight lately, but lest we forgot about its flagship MeeGo handset. If you've been anxiously hoping to somehow score an unlocked N9 in the US sans gray-market importers, apparently Fry's Electronics has you covered. Phone News spotted a listing for the phone in the store's latest weekly ad -- although upon closer inspection, it appears that the retailer isn't too sure about its actual specs. Aside from describing the 3.9-inch slab of polycarbonate as a 4.3-inch device, it's also flubbed on the OS, calling it "Mego." Perhaps the most interesting error, however, is that the handset's ClearBlack AMOLED display is listed as Super AMOLED -- Samsung's competing technology. Assuming these are merely copy errors, you'll be able to pick one up for a spendy $600. Hit up the source link below to view the full ad.

Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 lands at Carphone Warehouse in the UK

Android Central

Another day, another Galaxy Tab launch. The latest Tab to be released is the awkwardly-named Galaxy Tab 2 7.0, which is now available at the Carphone Warehouse in the UK for £199 (~$315) for the 8GB Wifi-only version. The Galax Tab 2 7.0 is a re-imagining of the Tab 7 Plus, and includes a 1GHz dual-core CPU, 1GB of RAM, a 1024x600 TFT display and TouchWiz'd Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. There's also a redesigned front face featuring two side speakers, likely to protect against any legal shenanigans from Apple. All in all, the Tab 2 isn't going to blow you away with awesomeness, but you could do worse if you're after an Android tablet on a £200 budget.

The silver version of the Tab 2 is available now, while the white variant will launch next Friday, May 18. For more on the device, check out our hands-on preview from Mobile World Congress.

AVG launches LiveKive cloud sync and backup tool

avg livekive dropbox
A while back, we told you about AVG's new LiveKive service, a new cloud synchronization and backup tool which appears to have been named after a vat in which mash is made during the brewing process. But enough about AVG's odd choice of monikers -- LiveKive has launched and is now ready to accept your files into the AVG cloud.

LiveKive takes aim at services like Dropbox and SugarSync, though at the moment it's lagging behind in terms of features. As it stands, LiveKive is only compatible with Windows and OS X. There are no mobile clients yet, though with AVG's strong presence on Android we wouldn't be surprised to see an app arrive in the near future.

The company is offering a heck of a deal right now, however. If you sign up for a paid account during the launch phase, you can score unlimited storage for $80 for a whole year. You can't even score 50GB per year at that price from Dropbox, so if cost and space are more important to you than cross-platform availability, LiveKive might be worth checking out.

If you're not interested in ponying up any cash at the moment, you can still get a 5GB account free of charge. Just head on over, and create a LiveKive account.

Visualized: HP's all-in-one PCs over the years, one from 1983

Visualized: HP's all-in-one PCs over the years, one from 1983

HP's TouchSmart sub-brand and its other AIOs should be no stranger to many PC advocates, but in case you've never come across one before, the company's laid all of them out on one side of its Global Influencer Summit in Shanghai. Models range from the TouchSmart IQ770 launched back in 2007, all the way to the recently shipped Z1 workstation and even the just-announced t410 Smart Zero Client; but the real gem of the booth is that little beige HP 150 right in the middle -- it's one of the first-ever touchscreen PCs, dating back to 1983, powered by an 8MHz Intel 8088 chip, ran MS-DOS and cost a mere $3,995.

Whilst on the topic, HP's Vice President of Industrial Design Stacy Wolff shared some interesting stats: his team found that much like laptops, there are very different screen size preferences across different regions, with the US showing strong interest in 20-inch and 23-inch HP AIOs, whereas China much prefers 20-inch over 21.5-inch and 23-inch. With the big jump in AIO market penetration in each region between 2008 to 2012 (almost doubled in Japan and the US; and an even bigger leap for other markets), HP predicts that these machines will continue to steadily increase market penetration across more price points -- this was illustrated with what it conveniently calls the "AIO wedge" on a chart. Feel free to take a gander at our gallery for more tidbits.
