How Apple could provide direct document access in iOS 6

For a couple of years now, before every major release of iOS, I've begged and pleaded for a native iOS documents repository. Not a file system like OS X, but something that would do for documents what Photos.app and the photo picker do for images. Right now, even absent a file system and hierarchy, it's still too complex, confusing, and unwieldy for users to remember, find, and attach documents in iOS. iOS 6 is a chance for Apple to change that, and a Files app and documents picker are simple, consistent, convenient ways to do it.

The First Wireless TV Remote Looked and Worked Like a Sci-Fi Ray Gun [Past Perfect]

As we mourn the passing of Eugene J. Polley, it's worth taking a look back at his seminal invention that changed how we all lounge about watching TV. But when the first commercial wireless remote control appeared way back in 1955, it bared little resemblance to the remotes we use today. More »

Windows 8 now available to OEMs via Microsoft Connect

windows 8Select Microsoft Connect partners -- major players like HP -- have been given their first taste of Windows 8. According to various sources, the build string currently sits at 7971.0.110324-1900, which is the third milestone build of the successor to Windows 7.

So far, there haven't been many details revealed about Windows 8. An actual System Restore -- which is being referred to as History Vault -- has been reported, and the feature will allow users and administrators to completely roll back a system to a previous state. A factory reset option is also said to be included.

We've also seen Windows Live integration taking shape on the desktop. It's believed that you'll be able to log in to Windows 8 using your Windows Live credentials, not just a traditional offline Windows username and password.

All that's left now is for a leaked Windows 8 build to show up on a torrent site. Feel free to tip us if you see that happen.

Why Won't Twitter Tweet These Tweets? [Twitter]

Do this right now: Go to Twitter and type the words "get help." Or try "get hungry" or "get high" or "get laid." Really, any two-word pair beginning with "get" will do. Now send the Tweet. What's that? It vanished? Exactly. More »

Tron Mayer: Crappy, Naked John Mayer Hologram Is a Total Upgrade [Humor]

John Mayer kind of stinks, but at least you get the sense that understands he stinks and has some fun with it. Like with his born-in-New-Jersey malfunctioning nudist hologram, slated to go on tour in his stead. Which, you know, might not be the biggest downgrade in the world. Skype 5.3 for Windows released, improves mobile video call quality

Version 5.3 of Skype for Windows has just been released, with the main emphasis of the new release being improved call quality, and the quality of video received by mobile Skype users. Presumably one party of the video call must be using Skype for Windows 5.3, though.

Beyond improved call quality, not much has changed. You can now see your friends' presence icons when contact cards are collapsed, and the topic editing button is now always visible on the conversation header. For a complete list of changes, hit up the Skype Garage blog.

Samsung releases Galaxy Note ICS source code

Android Central

As required under the open source rules, Samsung has released its Linux kernel source code -- and other open-source bits -- for the recently-released Android 4.0 firmware for the international Galaxy Note. While the source code itself isn't much for regular users (or even power users) to get excited about, ROM developers will undoubtedly be pouring over this code in the weeks ahead with the aim of bringing better, faster custom firmware to the international Note. Not that this code is for the international Galaxy Note (GT-N7000), not the North American version that goes by a different name -- GT-i717.

To grab the Ice Cream Sandwich code for the Note, head over to the source link, then enter "N7000" in the search box.
