R2-D2 Flash Drive Cufflinks Are Obviously the Best Cufflinks In the Galaxy [Star Wars]

If I had to wear a suit to work, I would definitely buy these R2-D2 USB flash drive cufflinks. They can store 2GB of data each, which is pretty good. In fact, I can't think of a better cufflink—except a pair that also made R2 sounds. More »

Verizon Motorola XOOM ICS update has begun rolling out

XOOM

Update: When we said "Has begun rolling out," that should be pronounced "Coming June 4," as just stated by Verizon. Let the beatings begin.

If you're a Motorola XOOM owner on Verizon, we've got great news: The 4.0.4 (Ice Cream Sandwich) update has begun rolling out is nigh. We saw the Verizon update roadmap a couple weeks ago, suggesting that the ICS update could drop at any time, so it's nice to see it hit not too long afterwards.

There are a lot of enhancements that come with this update. The four features that Verizon is taking the most time to point out are:

  • The Launch Bar, which allows you to drop applications, shortcuts and folders into and access from any homescreen
  • Usage Center, which Verizon has been highly touting as of late. It lets you keep track of your data usage
  • Notification Pop Up Box, which contains all of your inboxes and notifications in one streamlined box
  • Folders, you've all seen ICS folders by now, so you'll get to create and use them on the XOOM screen as well

There are many other benefits from the update though. Here is a list:

  • 4G LTE upgrade issues resolved
  • Exchange/Activesync policy improvements
  • EAS security and sync fixed
  • Email search
  • Updated browser with faster rendering
  • Updated People application
  • Improved text input
  • Improved stability
  • App launcher has been redesigned to allow app dragging to uninstall or disable
  • Launch camera from lockscreen option
  • Single mode panorama mode
  • Photo editor added in Gallery application
  • New font (Roboto)

There is lots to like about this update, so if you have a XOOM, keep an eye out. If you haven't received it yet, sit tight, it's rolling out gradually. It is an OTA update, so all you have to do is go to Settings -> About Tablet -> System Update to check to see if you can get it.

If you have it and want to brag about the new features or just want to see how others are liking the update, sing out in our Motorola XOOM Forum.

Google Chrome and Chromium add protection against malicious downloads

google chrome malicious download
Google Chrome already sports a number of security-minded features, from Incognito mode to a software sandbox which makes exploiting the browser a Herculean task. Now, Google has announced additional protection for Chromium and Chrome users.

Built upon the Safe Browsing API, the new feature introduces protection against malicious downloads. If a download link appears in the Safe Browsing blacklist, Chrome and Chromium will warn users against downloading -- a save button is still presented, of course, in case you're convinced a file is perfectly safe to download.

We'd like to see something a bit more eye-catching than the red warning icon -- like perhaps painting the entire bar red. Many of the people a feature like this aims to protect probably won't notice the icon or change in wording as they'll be focused on clicking the save button.

Google is initially making download protection available to Chrome dev channel users, and you'll likely see it in Canary and Chromium snapshot builds as well. After thorough testing, beta and stable users will be next in line.

Google Translate for Android receives ICS makeover and additional text-to-speech languages

Google Translate

Although Google has been constantly updating their apps on what is seemingly a more then average frequency as of late, one app left behind for quite some time now has been Google Translate. That said; Google has now gone ahead and given translate some love by adding the Holo theme to the mix and bringing in more in line with their rest of their Ice Cream Sandwich looking apps. In addition to the updated looks, folks are also getting additional text to speech language support including Esperanto.

Google to flag 'censored' searches for Chinese users (video)

Image

Google is announcing that it's going to place a flag on contentious search terms for users in mainland China. Mountain View's Alan Eustace euphemistically described how some searches break a connection to the service, leading to users being frozen out for around a minute each time. He theatrically added that the company has checked its servers several times and found no error, so whatever issue causes these outages must be external. Whenever a term is typed that is likely to cause an "outage," the error message in the picture above will appear, with a suggestion to search for something else, or use Pinyin to search for a term where contentious keywords appear inside otherwise natural searches.

New smaller SIM format gets standardized, shrinks 40 percent

New smaller SIM format gets standardized, shrinks 40 percent

ETSI has given the nod to a new SIM format standard, which will be 40 percent smaller than the existing micro-SIM design. Agreeing to the design in Osaka, Japan, the shape will be 12.3mm by 8.8mm and will measure the same thickness as existing SIMs at 0.67mm thick. The design promises to work with existing hardware and appears to fly closer to Apple's suggested size, following plenty of crossed words between manufacturers over the next iteration of the card.

[Thanks Prodan]

Apple was apparently threatened by Spotify's U.S. entry

Most of the really interesting stuff from the D10 relating to Apple has come from the Tim Cook interview, but another interesting tidbit came from an interview with Spotify's Sean Parker and Daniel Ek. When asked if Apple had tried to stop Spotify from entering the U.S. market, Parker hesitantly answered, "There was some indication that that might have been happening."
