Amazon Appstore for Android Test Drive hands on: surprisingly cool, but still US-only

Amazon Appstore for Android Test Drive
When Amazon Appstore for Android launched last week, one of its primary features -- Test Drive -- was disabled just a few minutes after it opened. With no try-before-you-buy, no refund process, and 1-Click purchasing ready to strike at any moment, this caused some problems. Anyway, don't despair: Test Drive is now enabled.

Before you get your hopes up, Test Drive doesn't work with every app. The IMDb app works fine -- you can even watch movie trailers on it! -- but the Angry Birds games are sadly not enabled. Some games work surprisingly well, though, like Bubble Buster. There's very little latency, and the framerate is really rather good. The Test Drive experience is so true to life that you even get ads; how cool is that?

Mac OS X Lion Preview 2 released, introduces mega exciting leather bound iCal skin

This is one of those posts that could probably be condensed into a tweet: Apple has released the second Preview of Mac OS X 10.7 Lion. If you're running Preview 1, it looks like you'll first receive a small update via Software Update, and then you can download Preview 2 from the Mac App Store.

There has been some speculation that Apple is getting close to a release or Golden Master build, but judging by 9to5 Mac's initial findings there's definitely some way to go. The Golden Master will probably appear at, or just before, the Apple WWDC in June.

So far, it's looking like the only changes in Preview 2 are the leather bound iCal skin that you can see above, and the main iChat window now combines your AIM, Bonjour and Jabber contacts, like Adium. We're sure that more details will emerge throughout the day, though, and there's bound to be lots of invisible changes, too. We'll update this post when we find out more.

Toshiba updates Portege Z835 Ultrabook with Ivy Bridge, renames it the Z935

Toshiba's getting the most attention today for announcing two new laptops (including one with a bonkers 21:9 aspect ratio), but it's also getting some extra mileage out of its first Ultrabook, the Portege Z835. The company just announced it's refreshing the system with a Core i5 Ivy Bridge processor, and that it shall henceforth be known as the Portege Z935. Other than that, the chassis and other key specs are expected to remain the same. Look for it on shelves starting June 24th, and don't be surprised by a bump in price: it now starts at $900, up from $800 when it had Sandy Bridge.

TypeDrawing for iPad Ignites the Imagination

One thing is clear after finger painting with text for an afternoon with TypeDrawing for iPad V3.0: I'm only limited by my imagination. Of course, the same could be said for an old-school yellow pencil, but the point remains -- TypeDrawing does what it says it does, and it does it better than I expected. In fact, for a few minutes, I was having a heckuva good time.

Nuance’s Dragon ID Lets You Unlock Your Smartphone Or Tablet By Talking To It

dragonidSpeech recognition giant Nuance has made their share of plays in the mobile space before -- they acquired Vlingo last year and pushed out their Dragon Go! voice command app to both iOS and Android. Their latest mobile endeavor, Dragon ID, is a little different -- its main draw is that it's capable of recognizing distinct voices and using them to authenticate users and unlock devices. It turns out that Dragon ID is quite the polyglot too, as the service is capable of recognizing voice input in English, French, German, Italian, Spanish, Chinese, Japanese and Korean. Simply saying "Hello Dragon" in any of those languages unlocks the phone and allows users to dive into their content.

Toshiba unveils Windows 8 concept devices, details stay hidden

Toshiba unveils Windows 8 concept devices, details stay hidden

If you're looking for pricing, specs, availability and all that good stuff, then you've come to the wrong place. What we have here is a gallery of photos revealing Toshiba's various concepts of what Windows 8 devices ought to look like. There's a Transformer-style tablet with detachable keyboard dock -- a form factor we're seeing plenty of at Computex right now. There's also a slider PC that looks rather like the MSI Slider S20 we played with earlier. Finally, perhaps the most conservative of the bunch is a clamshell laptop design with a touchscreen. So yes, as concepts go none of these are especially pioneering -- but at least Toshiba will know it can't dally in bringing its ideas to market and hitting a competitive price point.

Wibbitz Raises $2.3M Series A For Technology That Turns Text Into Videos

wibbitz-logoWibbitz, a company whose tagline once called it the "play button for the web" (it's now just "text-to-video") has closed a $2.3 million Series A round headed up by Horizons Ventures, the internet and technology investment fund belonging to Li Ka-shing. Also participating in the round were previous investors, Initial Capital and lool Ventures. The service is somewhat similar to former TechCrunch Disrupt winner Qwiki, as it also automatically generates videos based on the content found on websites, but the twist is that it's designed for use by publishers who want to offer quick, digestible video summaries of their articles' content.
