NVIDIA partners with Nyko to launch game controllers for Android tablets

Android Central

Peripheral makers Nyko have announced a partnership with NVIDIA and have unveiled a line of game controllers for use with Android tablets. The controllers, the Playpad and the Playpad Pro, are optimized for use with Tegra devices and should work flawlessly with the Tegra 3 chipset. Devices are also required to be running Android 3.0 and above with Bluetooth capabilities.

The controllers will be useable right from the outset, no rooting, hacking or tweaking is required. Through a free application too known as Playground, support for legacy apps that aren't optimized for Tegra devices will be possible as well providing they meet the necessary criteria.

The Playpad will be the smaller of the two devices, and will come with dual analog sliders, a carry case and a collapsible tablet stand. The Playpad Pro by contrast is a full sized gaming controller, with dual analog sticks, a D-pad, shoulder buttons and face buttons.

Sony Handycam HDR-GW77V has pocket camcorder form-factor and waterproof design, we go hands-on

Sony Handycam HDR-GW77V has pocket camcorder form-factor and waterproof design, we go hands-on

Waterproof camcorders have traditionally been popular in the pool but less compelling on land, given the somewhat-cumbersome designs, so-so image quality and form-factors that aren't necessarily more comfortable than a similarly equipped smartphone. This may describe nearly every pocket cam you've considered, but not Sony's new Handycam -- instead, think of the HDR-GW77V as a high-end camcorder you'll want to use everywhere, that happens to be just as rugged as it is practical. The camera packs the standard ruggedized punch, with a waterproof rating to 16 feet, the ability to survive a five-foot drop and a dustproof housing (though that's typically a given for tightly-sealed cams). You wouldn't think to take still photos with your camcorder, but Sony wants you to just that -- to the tune of 20.4 megapixels. The Handycam's 10x optical zoom lens can capture static frames just as easily as motion, with features like optical SteadyShot and Sweep Panorama, though the 1/3.91-inch CMOS sensor means you shouldn't expect point-and-shoot-level image quality.

The GW77V can shoot 1080/60p video and features a wide-angle 29.8mm G lens, along with a 3-inch 921k-dot ExtraFine touch-enabled LCD. There's a dual Memory Stick M2/microSD slot, 16GB of internal memory and a GPS module with built-in NAVTEQ maps to boot (accounting for roughly 2.7 gigs of that internal storage). We spent a few minutes shooting with the GW77V and were quite pleased with its performance -- the Handycam was very responsive, with very fast focusing and an Optical SteadyShot feature that resulted in smooth footage, even while holding the camera by hand with the lens zoomed in completely. This certainly isn't your run-of-the-mill waterproof model, but considering the $700 price tag, you wouldn't expect it to be. The Handycam HDR-GW77V is slated to hit stores in silver, blue and black later this month.

This Augmented Reality App Is the Final Nail in the QR Code's Hideous Coffin [Video]

Just about everyone except for inept marketers can agree that QR codes are terrible and useless. That being said, there's not really a better alternative if you're looking to implement augmented-reality on the cheap. Until now, thanks to Layar's new page-scanning smartphone app. More »

Microsoft's E3 Message: It's All About Games - and Everything Else

E3 remains the biggest video game trade event in the world, but Microsoft proved that the electronic entertainment world could be very much in transition as the Xbox looks to continue its dominance in the living room. "Xbox has moved from being the best-selling console in North America to being the best-selling console worldwide," said Don Mattrick, president of interactive entertainment at Microsoft.

Nuance Dragon ID secures phones, tablets and PCs with your voice

Nuance Dragon ID secures phones, tablets and PCs with your voiceDo you wish your phone would wake up when you commanded it to, like Galaxy S III? Well, it's not gonna happen (at least not without some hacking). But, your next phone might just sport the feature, all without having to be saddled with the rest of TouchWiz. Nuance is bringing its powerful voice recognition tech to OEMs and offering them the ability to not only unlock phones with voice controls, but lock them down using biometrics. In that way, it's actually got a leg up on S Voice. Dragon ID isn't a gimmick -- it's a security feature. In fact, if properly integrated, it can recognize multiple voices and open up to custom homescreens for each user. Sadly we have no idea when or where this tech will first show up, but we wouldn't be shocked to see it on both Android and Windows 8 tablets, as well as smartphones and PCs in the near future. For a few more scraps of info, check out the PR after the break.

TELUS offers up revised ICS device update schedule

ICS device update schedule

TELUS has been doing a good job of keeping folks in the loop when it comes to their Android 4.0.4 Ice Cream Sandwich update schedule and last week, a new revised update was posted. The HTC Amaze 4G roll out has already begun and next on the list is the Samsung Galaxy S II X slated for June 12th with a small break between it and the HTC Desire HD on July 25th unless by some miracle someone approves the Galaxy Note update early.. Sadly, there are a few devices that still have no firm dates associated to them as of yet, despite what Samsung says.
