Kobo Vox gains Google certification - a viable budget tablet option now?

Android Central

You might not be too familiar with the Kobo Vox, and you would be forgiven for it. With it, Kobo tried to go down the Nook Color / Kindle Fire road -- producing essentially an e-reader that had a full color capacitive display with Android on board. Where Barnes and Noble and Amazon may have succeeded, for Kobo, the Vox has been less impressive. One of the biggest issues with the Vox, is the difficulty in getting apps onto the device with no Google Play Store. In the UK for example, the Amazon Appstore isn't available either leaving Vox owners with a tedious time ahead should they want to do more than just read on it, especially since the on board third party store is pretty slim pickings. And, lets face it, Google Play is the best place to get apps, right?

However, the Vox is about to set itself apart from the respective B&N and Amazon offerings. Kobo has announced today that the Vox will be receiving Google Certification. That means, in particular, that owners will be able to access the official Google Play Store and download all the fabulous -- fart apps aside -- applications within. With Google applications on board, does this now mean the Vox becomes a viable budget tablet?

Maybe, maybe not. It isn't particularly slim, and it doesn't have a particularly great screen. It isn't that powerful either, with an 800MHz ARM Cortex-A8 processor, and only 512MB of RAM, but it does have a microSD card slot to expand the onboard 8GB storage. It's cheap too, in the UK retailing at £150 from high-street chain WHSmiths, and $179.99 in the US at Best Buy online. And, should you be so inclined, the Vox also comes in a rather fetching shade of pink.

New Vox's will be sold ready to go, but existing owners will be able to update their devices OTA.

On iOS 6 bugs, compatibility, and App Store reviews (or, please don't be a jerk)

iOS 6 is currently in closed beta, not general release. While Apple provides it to anyone with $99, and there will no doubt be all manner of leaks minor and major, there's something incredibly important to keep in mind -- please don't be a jerk about it.

BlackBerry PlayBook hacked to run iOS apps, including ours

A clever dev has managed to shoehorn full-blown iOS apps onto the BlackBerry PlayBook tablet. Such App Store titles as Tiny Tower, Super Monkey Ball, TomTom Navigation, Sushi Cat, iFart, Frogger, Galcon, Sketchbook, and a few others. Oh, and the iMore app, of course. This has been made possible through a kind of iOS player that a developer has managed to get to work on Windows too.

Facebook Opens Center to Help Friends Get Appier

Facebook has cut the ribbon on its App Center -- a hub that lets users access apps from Facebook and related third parties. There are about 600 apps in the center so far, including favorites like Draw Something, Pinterest and Nike+ GPS. Facebook is taking a curated approach to the apps. Besides the popular ones, it is suggesting newer apps users might want to try.

You can now rent Adobe Photoshop for $35 per month, CS 5.5 available soon

Rejoice! No longer will you have to fork over $700 for a Photoshop CS5 license! Adobe has unveiled a new subscription scheme where you can rent the entire Creative Suite, or individual packages, by the month, or for an entire year.

Adobe Photoshop can be yours for $35 per month if you agree to rent it for 12 months, or $49 per month if you require its services for a shorter period. Dreamweaver can be had for even cheaper, at just $19 per month. The entire Master Collection is still rather expensive, though, at $125 per month.

Today, Adobe also ushered in the release of Creative Suite 5.5, and simultaneously upped its release cycle from 18 months to 24 months. This means, if you rent Photoshop for two years, it's actually the same cost as buying it outright. There's no rent-to-own option, though -- so you wouldn't have access to the cheaper upgrade price once Creative Suite 6 rolls around next year. Still, if you need access to Photoshop, After Effects or Premiere for a one-time project, the new rental scheme could be exactly what you're looking for.

In other news, Adobe has announced that it will be launching three rather exciting iPad apps that work in conjunction with Photoshop: Eazel, Nav, and Color Lava. Eazel lets you five-finger paint on your iPad, and export the result into Photoshop; Nav acts as some kind of workspace, brush and menu extension, and the hopefully named Color Lava is a paint mixing palette. The apps are expected to appear in the App Store in the next 30 days.

British royal family announces iOS and Android wedding app

William and KateTo celebrate the imminent marriage of Prince William and Kate Middleton, the Royal Collection will release an Android an iOS app that chronicles the last seven royal marriages, including Queen Victoria's marriage to Prince Albert in 1840.

Ironically, the app won't actually feature anything to do with William and Kate's marriage -- rather, it will focus on the "tradition, splendor and romance" that are intrinsic to British royal marriages. "[The app] will share the stories of past royal weddings and offer a wealth of historical context for the ceremony on April 29."

Unfortunately, the app, which has been lumbered with the fantastically creative name of 'Royal App,' won't be available until April 18 -- just 11 days before Kate's big day. It won't be free, either: it'll cost the rather princely sum of £1.79, or three of your Tea Party-loving dollars. The money will go to the Royal Collection, though, which is a good cause!

Time Warner Cable starts rolling out lightly refreshed guide with new color scheme, cloud VOD search

Time Warner Cable starts rolling out lightly refreshed guide with new color scheme, cloud VOD search

While it's definitely good news that Time Warner Cable is revisiting its Navigator guide again, the bad news is that at least in terms of appearance, very little has changed. The screenshots above show the old guide (left) next to the new one (right) and as you can see, other than a color scheme adjustment to match its new apps, things are almost entirely the same. In terms of functional adjustments, names have changed for some of the menus, and now the A button on the remote pulls up channels listed by category, the B button searches by title and the select button lets you know if features like Start Over, Look Back or VOD are available. According to CED Magazine, the guide's (slight) facelift also goes hand in hand with a new cloud-based video on-demand portal that includes with richer graphics and metadata, as a prelude to more cloud-provided navigation and IPTV set-top boxes. So far we're seeing notes that the new guide is being delivered in Syracuse and Charlotte, if you haven't received it yet Time Warner Cable says it will be running newspaper ads ahead of the change in each area -- people still read newspapers, right?

Liberating Your Locked GSM Phone

Wireless carriers sell you "postpaid" contract phones at a considerable discount. The carrier expects to recoup its outlay -- the full price of the equipment -- over the life of the contract that you sign. Often, it will lock the equipment to its network through a technique that stops the phone working if the SIM card ID and the phone serial number, aka "IMEI number," don't match what's configured.
