YouTube Live now streaming select partners in real time

Not content with limiting its dominance in streaming uploaded videos, YouTube is now ready to take on competitors like Justin.TV and Ustream. The new YouTube Live service is being rolled out to select YouTube partners and will enable real-time broadcasting. In its official announcement, Google states that "The goal is to provide thousands of partners with the capability to live stream from their channels in the months ahead."

You can check out live broadcasts at http://www.youtube.com/live, where you'll also find a schedule of upcoming episodes from beta partners like Revision3 and Destructoid. You're also able to subscribe to YouTube Live broadcasts -- which will ensure you're notified when a new episode is coming up.

Google Talk down for 'majority of users' (update: services restore)

Google Talk down for 'majority of users'

Google (and several users) are reporting widespread outage on its Talk service. Although there's no time set for when the service might return, Google says that it's "continuing to investigate this issue," aiming to give a status update later today, at 1:50PM ET. The service has been reportedly down for two hours.

Update: And it appears to be back, according to both Google and our own accounts. Some users appeared to get an early return to full service, while others had to wait for the mobile apps to recover. Apologizing for the outage, Google stated that, "system reliability is a top priority," and that the company is "making continuous improvements to make our systems better."

ECOmove pegs QBEAK EV for 2012 launch, keeps specifics vague

ECOmove pegs QBEAK EV for 2012 launch

We may be comfortable in our four-door electric hatchbacks and screaming fast no-emission roadsters, but Danish automotive outfit ECOmove has more conservative aspirations: the QBEAK. This dainty driver eschews standard vehicle design to create a compact, customizable package. "We have chosen to use alternative light weight materials, "explains ECOmove CEO Mogens Løkke. "The QBEAK is equipped with a range of sustainable, competitive features such as in-wheel motors, an unique chassis platform with room for a flexible battery modules and a communication system based on a smartphone." Details on smartphone compatibility, price and specific availability are still scarce, but the firm says we can expect to see the tiny EV puttering down the boulevard later this year. Can't wait? Head on past the break for a quirky preview video.

Add a Windows 8 user tile to your Windows 7 taskbar

Now that Windows 8 images have begun leaking out, it's only a matter of time until developers start releasing mods for Windows 7 which mimic upcoming features. Over at Into Windows, they've spotted one such mod already.

In the earliest Windows 8 images, we saw Windows Live integration on the taskbar. In the far right corner, there's a user tile displayed. If you'd like to do the same on Windows 7, download Taskbar User Tile from DeviantArt user AngelWZR.

Once installed, your current picture will appear on the taskbar. Click it, and a menu appears which allows you to log off, switch users, and access the control panel. Right now, the mod only works if your taskbar is displayed on the bottom of your Windows desktop.

Make Anything, Anywhere With This Combination 3D Printer and CNC Mill Briefcase [Video]

A pair of MIT researchers—Ilan Moyer and Nadya Peek—have created a briefcase that can be used to create almost anything, including a duplicate of itself. And that's because inside the case is a multi-purpose tool that works as a CNC mill, a precision cutter, and a 3D printer. More »

Seidio ACTIVE and SURFACE Samsung Galaxy S III Cases Review

Congrats on buying that brand new Samsung Galaxy S III. Now you probably want a case to protect it. I have 2 cases from Seidio for your consideration. They are the ACTIVE and SURFACE cases, which are available in multiple colors, with or without belt holsters and one even comes with a kickstand.

Note: Click the images in this review to see a larger view.

I’m going to start with the ACTIVE case, which comes with or without a kickstand and with or without a belt holster. I was sent the combo version with both the kickstand and holster.

The ACTIVE case is a two layer case that consists of a soft Black silicon skin style case and a more rigid snap on back cover that is available in 5 colors (Red, Black, Blue, Purple and White).

The interior skin is soft to the touch and provides shock absorbing protection. It takes little effort to install or remove. I should note that the volume and power buttons are covered by the sides of the skin. Special “buttons” molded into the skin allow you to access the features without difficulty.

You could use the SGS3 with just this skin if you wanted to. But snapping on the rubber coated back cover adds some extra protection and is easy to install and remove.

Cutouts for the camera lens, LED flash, microphone, earphone and USB connector allow you to use all the features of the phone while it is in this case.

The back cover is available with or without the kickstand feature. It’s an aluminum leg that folds out to prop up the SGS3 in landscape orientation. However, it is not designed to hold the phone in portrait orientation. A magnet embedded into the back side of the kickstand keeps it securely seated when not being used.

Available separately or with the Combo version of the ACTIVE, is the plastic belt clip holster. This is a full sized felt lined holster that holds the phone face-in. The strong spring belt clip can be rotated so that you can wear it as shown above or horizontally.

Another spring loaded clip at the top holds the phone securely in the holster while also providing an easy way to remove the phone.

As reviewed, the ACTIVE combo version of case is priced at $54.95.

The SURFACE case also comes with or without the belt holster, which is the same holster used with the ACTIVE case.

This case is comprised of two pieces that snap together. The case is rigid, but has a soft touch coating. The interior is lined in velvet.

To install the case, you just slide the bottom half on the phone, slide on the top half and snap them together. Easy right? Yeah I thought so too…

The SURFACE case is available in the same 5 colors as the ACTIVE case (Black, White, Red, Blue and Purple). I was sent the Black version. I liked this case and thought that if I ended up buying an SGS3 for myself, I might use this case with it full time. It adds very little bulk, while providing extra grip.

All the buttons and ports are accessible and the camera lens has some extra protection.

I liked this case a lot until it came time to take it off so that I could box up the loaner phone to send it back to Verizon. Since the case was so easy to install, I didn’t think it would be hard to remove. Boy was I wrong. I tugged, pulled, huffed, puffed and almost resorted to using screw driver to pry the pieces apart. I finally gave up and gave it to Jeanne to see if she could get the case to come apart. She had no luck either. I will say that the Samsung Galaxy S3 is one tough phone for putting up with the man handling that we gave it. Even though it feels a little too plasticy for my liking, it’s pretty darned rugged. I finally gave it to my friend Bill and after a few minutes of grunting, he managed to get the case to come apart. Whew!

So even though I like this case, I wouldn’t recommend one because they are just too hard to remove.

As reviewed, the SURFACE combo version of case is priced at $49.95. If you don’t care about a belt holster, both cases are priced at $29.95 when purchased without one.

Logitech's Skype TV Cam HD passes through FCC

Logitech's Skype TV Cam HD passes through FCC

Logitech isn't giving up on living room video chats just yet. Sure, the Revue and the Viera-friendly TV Cam failed to set the world on fire, but a new TV Cam HD just hit the FCC and appears poised to bring Skype to your couch. There was a promo video on Vimeo, but it's since been pulled. Fortunately there's still a Best Buy listing (at the more coverage link) for the device which has it priced at $200. When will it hit shelves? That's anyone's guess... but we imagine it wont be much longer.

Just Mobile Xtand Go Mounting System for iPhone 4/4S Review

As I have stated in past reviews, keeping my world less cluttered and relatively organized is key to managing my hectic, whirlwind life. Whether it is for work or personal travel, when I am in a vehicle my smartphone is typically rattling around the center console or available cup holder. A very sad circumstance, since I would never put my iPad or MBAir into that kind of harm’s way. It also makes my iPhone’s usefulness during those times….limited (and perhaps my driving a bit more hazardous). Well, the engineers at Just Mobile have created the Xtand Go, a well designed mounting system for your vehicle to hold your mobile devices while motoring down the road.

Contents:

Features:

  • Flexible mounting system
  • Mount for iPhone 4S/ 4
  • Go Button mount for smartphones and sat-navs
  • Pocket-sized and portable

Dimension:

  • 12.1 x 6.5 x 10.3 cm
  • 4.8 x 2.6 x 4.1 in

Even though the Xtand Go vehicle mount includes an iPhone 4 specific holder, the system is designed to hold almost any mobile device (nav-unit, iPod, other smartphone, etc). The black plastic Go Buttons can be attached to the back of whichever device you want the mounting bracket to support.

The windshield suction cup is extremely well done. To be honest, it is the best designed one I have ever seen. Most others usually fall off over time or if the windshield gets too hot or cold. The Xtand Go applied effortlessly and has remained attached to my windshield ever since. Removing it from your windshield is just as easy to do as it is to install. Simply twist the base ring counterclockwise and peel off using the tab on the sucker’s surface.

The Xtand Go allows for 360 degree orientation. The plastic tab on the side of the mounting bracket enables you to easily remove the iPhone 4.

The base/mount arm is made of three separate sections/blocks. Each section is attached and pivots from one edge. Each also independently rotates 360 degrees, enabling you to place/install the Xtand pretty much anywhere and position it to suit you and whatever vehicle you are driving. The base is very sturdy with minimal wobble or wiggle while your vehicle in motion.

In situations where you want to install your iPhone (and Xtand) to your dash rather than your windshield, Just Mobile has that taken care of as well, including three stand mounts and adhesive pads.

These adhesive pads can be applied to most (non-iPhone) devices, your dashboard, roof lining – anywhere they will stick. The stand mounts can also be attached to your iPhone case, making removing your device unnecessary. Fortunately for me, the stand mounts match the dash color of my truck, so much you can hardly tell it is there.

The mounting bracket can not only be configured to nearly any angle or orientation, but the three blocks that form the extendable arm can be re-tightened with a simple allen wrench. However, the further you extend the arm, the less stable it becomes.

Whether attached to my dash or stuck to my windshield, the Xtand Go is one of the better compact/transportable car iPhone (/device) mounts I have used. Its compact design makes the Xtand Go mounting system easy to take with you on travel. Along with looking very nice, the Xtand Go is stable and does not wiggle/shake much at all. The MSRP is $39.95 but can be found on the Net for a fraction of that.

Product Information

Price:$39.99
Manufacturer:Just|Mobile
Pros:
  • - Nicely constructed
  • - Well engineered
  • - Easy to install/good instructions
  • - Relatively stable
  • - Fitted for the iPhone 4/4S but can be used with other smartphones/devices
  • - Transportable
Cons:
  • - None

iWork apps for OS X Mountain Lion and iOS start receiving updates

iWork apps for OS X Mountain Lion and iOS start receiving updates

The iWork suite of apps which includes Pages, Numbers, and Keynote are getting some updates on both OS X Mountain Lion and iOS for iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch. The new versions of the apps appear to add iCloud support across both and dictation support for Mountain Lion.

If you've got a Mac running Mountain Lion, which was just released today you'll want to check the Mac App Store for updates to the iWork suite. Mountain Lion and iOS will now keep all your documents synced across all your devices via iCloud.

The update on the Mac App Store says the following is included in the update:

iWork Update 9.2 adds support for the following features available on OS X Mountain Lion:

  • iCloud: Store documents in iCloud and keep them automatically up to date across your Mac, iPad, iPhone, iPod touch, and the web. Changes made to a document on one device automatically appear on all your other devices. Requires iWork for iOS 1.6.1 or later installed on your iOS device.

  • Dictation: Speak words, numbers, or sentences and watch them appear in your presentation, document, or spreadsheet.

  • The iWork apps are also enhances to take advantage of the Retina display on the new Mac hardware so presentations, documents, and spreadsheets appear sharper and more vibrant.

So far we see updates for all three iWork apps on iOS and the update for the entire suite in the Mac App Store. No word on the iLife suite yet in terms of new features or functionality but a couple of us have seen some bug fixes and compatibility updates coming through for Mountain Lion. If you don't see the updates yet, keep checking the iOS and Mac App Stores.

Anyone seeing any other interesting updates on iOS or OS X other than bug fixes?

Microsoft confirms dates for BUILD 2012 October 30th to November 2nd in Redmond

Microsoft just announced the big launch date for Windows 8 last week, and it's now also confirmed the dates for another of the company's key events this year. The next BUILD conference will take place between October 30th and November 2nd, with the company's Redmond campus serving as the host location. Registration will open up at 8AM Pacific on August 8th (hint, hint), at which point the company will also start dishing some details about speakers and events taking place. Naturally, we'll be there to report on all the goings-on if you can't make it yourself.
