Yelp 6.0 for iPhone brings Yelpy Insights

Yelp for iPhone has been updated to version 6.0 and brings with it the ability to get inside scoop on which businesses vegetarians love and which ones are popular for certain age groups, and more. You can also add compliments and likes to Tips and the iPad has version has received tons of enhancements.

This update is literally filled to the brim with awesomeness. We're not joking -- we had to get an intern to stand on the top of it just to get it zipped up and shipped to the App Store.

  • We're rolling out a brand new business page on iPhone! Boom.
  • Support for Yelpy Insights -- get the inside scoop on which businesses vegetarians love and which ones are popular for certain age groups
  • Now you can compliment and like Tips on iPhone
  • Updated navigation for logged out users on iPhone
  • Tons o' iPad Enhancements: Now you can edit business information; add photos; give Useful, Funny, Cool votes to reviews; and send Yelpers compliments for their great reviews.

One of the features missing from this update is that you still do not have the ability to post a review to yelp with the app. You can write the review and save it as a draft, but you have to visit the web to actually post it. I have no idea why Yelp would make such a decision.

Have you spent time with the new Yelp yet? What are your thoughts?

Some happy news for the many who've already plunked down their hard earned cash on OUYA -- the Android-based gaming console will be getting streaming gaming courtesy of the folks at OnLive. The prospective console maker broke the news on its Kickstarter page, noting that the experience will also include 30 minute free demos of "nearly every game" in its library, including Ravaged and Darksiders II. Also, some news for those wondering if the other side of the console's controller was a radical departure [see above]. Check out a press release detailing the OnLive partnership after the break. Oh, and for those of you keeping track: the Kickstarter page is currently at a whopping $5.5 million pledged, with a dozen days left.

Trioh! is a Flashlight that Automatically Turns on when the Power goes Off

When the power goes out, does it take you awhile to find a flashlight? How about a flashlight that has batteries that actually work? Before I got my generator, I would have to go down the stairs in the dark and then fumble around trying to feel for the battery powered lantern on the shelf in my office. Not safe and definitely not geeky enough. Enter the Trioh!, which takes an ordinary flashlight and turns it into a device with 3 in 1 functionality. First of all, it’s a sexy looking light with a flared base that can sit on a shelf and fit in with almost any decor. The great part is that the base charges the Trioh! through induction. It gets even better… The light has the ability to know when the power has gone out and automatically lights up so you can quickly walk to it and grab it. TheĀ rechargeableĀ batteries will power the Trioh! for up to 12hrs of constant use and in emergency mode, the light will pulse so that it will last for up to 3 days. The Trioh! is a Kickstarter project that is currently seeking $90,000 of funding. They are already halfway there, but need your help to make their goal. If you’re interested in getting your own Trioh!, a $69 pledge will secure one for you.

Save your tabs and Panorama tab groups in Firefox 4

Firefox 4 save tabs
When Firefox 4's tab grouping tool, Panorama, had its keyboard shortcut changed to the finger-breaking combo of Ctrl+Shift+E, we thought Panorama would get dropped before FF4's final release -- but, thankfully, it made the cut!

If you've used Firefox 4 and Panorama, you might have noticed that Mozilla's new browser doesn't always save your tab groupings when you close the browser -- a bit of a pain, if you spend a long time setting up the perfect groups! This is tied into the removal of the 'Save and Quit' dialog box -- and enabling Panorama tab group saving is just a matter of re-enabling the Save and Quit dialog.

Open a new tab and head to about:config. Click through the warning and type 'quit' into the filter box. Double click browser.showQuitWarning to change its value to true (see image after the break). That's it -- now you'll have the option of saving your tabs, and thus tab groups, when you close Firefox.

Earliest iPhone 4 and iPad Prototypes Look Pretty Ridiculous Today [Apple]

The iPhone 4 and iPad we know today are gadgetry in the extreme—digital pieces of paper, if you will. Nothing garish, nothing in excess. And that's mostly true in their prototypes! But some of these leaked early iPhone and iPad prototypes? They're bonkers. More »

Vizify offers free infographics all about you, makes you feel like a big shot

Infographics. The stuff of high turnover websites and news channels, right? Well, yes, but now you can bring the same white space and pastel shades to your own internet footprint, courtesy of free infographic web app Vizify. It's still in its trial period for now, which means you'll have to wait for an entry code to tap into the breezy visualization generator, but we managed to plug in as many social networks as we could to see how it all works. The service is definitely centered around those that are very connected to the internet. Vizify will draw information from Facebook, Twitter, FourSquare, LinkedIn and also connect through work-based websites you add yourself. It will then populate a clickable front page with circles including images, quotes and links to your profile elsewhere. The service, which is geared at recruitment, crafts a convenient short link to offer up on resumes or job emails. Edit options include a choice of color palettes, and the ability to tweak the layout of the information circles [seen above] and the larger pages that follow it, bringing either more career-centric (or interesting) content to the forefront. Sign up for an access code at the source to give it a try for yourself, or take a stalker-esque trip down an Engadget editor's social network tracks at the second link below.

TweetDeck to launch as HTML5 Web app, now accepting beta testers

When TweetDeck landed in the Chrome Web Store, it seemed like an indication that it might eventually evolve into a pure HTML5 Web app. Now it looks as though that's exactly what's going to happen, with TweetDeck announcing that a new, not-just-for-Chrome Web client is ready for beta testing.

It's a natural progression for TweetDeck, especially since its originally Adobe Air app is practically all Web code. TweetDeck Web will sport a feature set which is nearly identical to the Chrome app, with the notable exception of Twitter streaming.

Initially, TweetDeck is targeting Firefox 4 and 3.6, Google Chrome, and Safari. Opera and Internet Explorer 9 won't be invited to the dance until a bit later on.

If you'd like to get in on the TweetDeck Web beta, head on over and register -- or sign up using your existing TweetDeck account.

Balance is a challenging mouse-based physics game

balance
Years of computer use have taught us that the mouse cursor is "above" the windows. It doesn't push anything around; at least not without you clicking anything.

Balance takes that ingrained bit of knowledge and cancels it out. Suddenly your cursor (a blue dot) is solid - and if it touches the blue block, it pushes it around.

Your job is to use your cursor to nudge the blue block over to the orange block. You will have to push it, lift it and even flip it on its side, and then balance it. It's a very tricky game - one I wouldn't recommend tackling with a laptop trackpad.

Still, if you have a mouse and a hankering for a little physics gameplay, this is a cute little game. I like how the blue block never stops smiling, it makes me feel better about the world.
