Parrot Zik by Starck review: Is $400 worth it for the fanciest, techiest headphones around?

Parrot Zik by Starck review: Is $400 worth it for the fanciest, techiest headphones around?

You do know that Parrot makes more than just the AR.Drone, right? It was at CES earlier this year that we first caught a glimpse of -- and subsequently began geeking out about -- the Parrot Zik by Starck. For those unfamiliar, these headphones are jam-packed with enough technologies to make even the geekiest audio lovers smitten. Priced at about $400, they feature Near Field Communication (NFC), Bluetooth connectivity, on-board capacitive touch-control, active noise cancellation, head detection, a jawbone sensor for speech and Parrot's audio-enhancing DSP app for iOS and Android -- not to mention a striking design by the renowned Philippe Starck.

This isn't the first time Parrot and Mr. Starck have worked together, but this does mark their debut in the portable audio market (as opposed to home-based speaker systems). In the case of this review, not one, but two Engadget editors spent some time testing the product. So, do they impress? More importantly, are they worth the $400 asking price? You know the drill: meet us after the break where we'll lay it all out.

Dia Does Diagrams Dutifully and Beautifully

Dia is an editor for diagrams, graphs and charts. It is the perfect tool to use for explaining a process or procedure in a concise, standardized visual representation. You will find numerous diagramming applications in both the commercial realm for Windows PCs and the free open source marketplace. Many of them are very lightweight tools. Others are very complicated and not easy to use well. That is not the case with Dia, however. Dia gives you a fairly large library of diagram objects.

Juicing Up Your Gadget Battery Power

I've written about keeping your devices powered while on the road before, and looked at techniques to reduce draw -- like reducing screen brightness and switching off phone radios. I also took a broad-brush look at different technologies, like battery packs and solar. Now I'm going to explain how to choose the right rechargeable battery, called a "secondary cell"; and choose the right technology, like solar, to increase your time between battery charges.

Farragomate is a social fridge magnet game where you make up sentences

farragomate
You know those fridge magnet kits composed of a whole bunch of words? The ones you put all over your fridge door and then try to arrange into all sorts of juvenile and/or amusing sentences. Well, Farragomate is the social, webby version of that very same pastime.

You get to play with a bunch of random strangers in real-time, and make up sentences out of a pre-set collection of words, including some fairly naughty ones, and all players' nicknames. As you can imagine, some of the results are not child-friendly.

There are ten rounds to a game. Once a round is done, players get to vote for their favorite sentence from that round. You can't vote for your own creation, of course. There's in-game chat, too.

I think the vocabulary could be made a bit more eclectic, but even as it is, it's a nice way to spend a few minutes and meet random strangers on the Internet (always a thrilling experience).

AT&T agrees to acquire NextWave for $600 million, gobbles up WCS and AWS spectrum

AT&T agrees to acquire NextWave, gobbles up more spectrum

AT&T's making no secret of the fact it wants to snatch up as much spectrum as it possibly can, so news of the company's proposed acquisition of NextWave Wireless doesn't result in much of a shock. AT&T has agreed to purchase the company -- and all of its WCS (Wireless Communication Service) and AWS spectrum licenses and equity along with it -- for $25 million, pending FCC approval. If you count $25 million in contingency costs and the outstanding debt the big blue globe has also picked up, however, the total bill climbs to $600 million.

The deal comes shortly after AT&T partnered with Sirius XM to petition the FCC in the hopes that it would allow WCS (2.3GHz) spectrum to be opened up for LTE use -- mobile data is currently restricted by the federal body to prevent any interference with satellite radio. The government hasn't given the green light for this proposal yet (additionally, the NextWave deal isn't likely to be approved until later this year), but that's not stopping AT&T from its preparations just in case -- it plans to have WCS LTE ready for deployment in three years if everything works out in the carrier's favor.

You can now rent Adobe Photoshop for $35 per month, CS 5.5 available soon

Rejoice! No longer will you have to fork over $700 for a Photoshop CS5 license! Adobe has unveiled a new subscription scheme where you can rent the entire Creative Suite, or individual packages, by the month, or for an entire year.

Adobe Photoshop can be yours for $35 per month if you agree to rent it for 12 months, or $49 per month if you require its services for a shorter period. Dreamweaver can be had for even cheaper, at just $19 per month. The entire Master Collection is still rather expensive, though, at $125 per month.

Today, Adobe also ushered in the release of Creative Suite 5.5, and simultaneously upped its release cycle from 18 months to 24 months. This means, if you rent Photoshop for two years, it's actually the same cost as buying it outright. There's no rent-to-own option, though -- so you wouldn't have access to the cheaper upgrade price once Creative Suite 6 rolls around next year. Still, if you need access to Photoshop, After Effects or Premiere for a one-time project, the new rental scheme could be exactly what you're looking for.

In other news, Adobe has announced that it will be launching three rather exciting iPad apps that work in conjunction with Photoshop: Eazel, Nav, and Color Lava. Eazel lets you five-finger paint on your iPad, and export the result into Photoshop; Nav acts as some kind of workspace, brush and menu extension, and the hopefully named Color Lava is a paint mixing palette. The apps are expected to appear in the App Store in the next 30 days.

Kuratas – Own Your Personal Mecha Robot

3.8 metres tall, weighing 4,500 kilos and able to move at 10 kmh with a diesel engine, the Kuratas by Suidobashi Heavy Industry is the first giant boarding-robot.  Controllable from the cockpit, via an external controller or  via your smartphone, the Kuratas also comes with built in weapons; the “bottle” rocket launcher and the BB Gatling gun that fires 6000 pellets per second.  The firing system for the Gatling gun?  The “Smile Shot”, yep it shoots when the pilot smiles. Now I don’t know about you but if I owned one of these I’d be grinning from ear to ear from the time I boarded it.  Collateral damage? :)

The Kuratas was recently exhibited at the Wonder Festival 2012 summer, and while it’s actually an art project by artist Kogoro Karata, the website states that pricing starts at around $1,500,000 and each robot will be custom made. Art project or not, who knows where this could lead? :)

Motorola Droid RAZR HD makes another cameo, shows its global creds

Motorola Droid RAZR HD makes another cameo, shows its global creds

Welcome to yet another episode in the Droid RAZR HD's ongoing leak to market. The global variant of Motorola's flagship handset -- which is expected to supersede the Atrix HD and inevitably land on Verizon real-soon-now -- just made an appearance on xda-developers. What's new? It appears this phone is being tested on Vodafone and supposedly features an eight-megapixel camera (down from the rumored 13 MP). As a refresher, the Droid RAZR HD is slated to run Ice Cream Sandwich on a dual-core 1.5GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 processor and boast a 720p HD display (likely 4.5-inches across). There's still no official word from Motorola, but we'll keep you posted as we find out more. In the meantime, take a look at the gallery below.

Sky UK takes on Netflix with the launch of Now TV movie streaming apps for iPhone and iPad

Sky UK takes on Netflix with the launch of Now TV movie streaming apps for iPhone and iPad

UK Satellite broadcaster, Sky has just launched its Now TV apps for the iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch. Now TV is a UK-only service that offers movies on the go without the need for a subscription to Sky satellite services. The apps compliment the roll out of the service for Mac and Windows PCs in mid-July and look to bring some stiff competition to Netflix.

NOW TV customers can ‘pay & play’ for instant access to an extensive range of over 1,000 movies through Sky Store including the very latest ‘now on DVD’ releases and much-loved classics. From launch, ‘now on DVD’ titles will include recent releases such as We Bought a Zoo, The Woman in Black, The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, This Means War and Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance. ‘Pay & play’ movies on NOW TV range from 99p for classic titles to £3.49 for the latest blockbusters.

If you are a big watcher of movies, Sky is also offering an all you can eat subscription service which it is calling Sky Movie Pass. This will cost £15 a month and those who sign up will receive the first 30 days for free. This is more than double the cost of a monthly subscription to Netflix. At the moment the apps don’t really offer much more than what is already available through Netflix and one or two other movie streaming services. Where this app might excel is in the promised future roll out of additional content. Sky should add in live action from the Barclay’s Premier League, UEFA Champions League, England Test cricket, Heineken Cup rugby, ATP tennis and the Masters from Augusta. If this content becomes available on a match by match basis, Sky could be onto a real winner!

If you want to give the app a go, you need to firstly set up an account at nowtv.com. Once you have done that, you can download the app from the link below. It is a universal app so works on iPhone, iPad and iPod touch. You must be running at least iOS 5.0. If it is anything like other Sky streaming apps, you may have trouble using it if you're jailbroken.

Free - Download Now

Would you consider watching movies or sports events on a pay and play basis with Sky's Now TV?
