UK Sony Tablet S receiving maintenance update

Android Central

The world may be forgetting about the Sony Tablet S, but Sony isn't. And that's a good thing. UK based Tablet S owners should be seeing an update pushing out to them right about now.

The update doesn't bump the Android version any further than the current 4.0.3, and at only 9MB isn't bringing anything massive to the tablet. But, the fellas over at Coolsmartphone are reporting that they're seeing a considerable improvement in performance. Overall they're seeing a distinct change in navigating through the tablets UI and menus, although app performance hasn't changed.

In any case, bug fixes and optimizations are as good a reason as any to update a device, so if you've got a Tablet S let us know in the comments below if you're seeing any changes.

Court Docs Reveal Details of Kim Dotcom's Rough-and-Tumble Arrest

Court testimony from the case of Kim Dotcom, the founder of file-sharing site Megaupload, has been released. Bloomberg was among those to report on the testimony, noting that a New Zealand police officer said the use of helicopters when arresting Dotcom was "over the top." Another report said that Dotcom claims to have been punched and kicked by police during the raid on his $25 million mansion. Dotcom was arrested in January on charges of orchestrating the biggest copyright infringement conspiracy in U.S. history.

Boomshine is a soothing-yet-frustrating time waster

boomshine
One click; just one single well-aimed click. That's all you get in Boomshine.

That single click triggers a chain reaction; circles start exploding, and other circles colliding with the shockwaves explode as well, creating their own shockwaves, which then catch other circles.

It's been done before, yes, but this one is a great iteration. The soundtrack is mellow, with lots of piano and some nice percussion (not electronic - it sounds like drums).

At each level you need to make a certain number of circles explode to go on to the next level. I got up to level 12, where you get 60 circles and need to make 55 of them explode. And then I kept trying and trying, but simply couldn't get it. I did get to 54 circles a couple of times, but as they say, you don't get points for trying.

There's no time limit, so you can carefully study the pattern of motion and place your click at the exact right place to create the best chain reaction. I've found that clicking near the middle of the screen works quite well, especially if the balls are slowly moving in that direction. By the time the first shockwave dies off, the oncoming balls usually hit it and the chain reaction continues.

What level did you reach? Screenshots please!

Sonic Bug Repellants Don't Freaking Work So Stop Buying Them [Bugs]

Summer usually means sticky sweaty skin and mosquitos who love to bite that sticky sweaty skin. How do you prevent mosquitos from biting you? Certainly not with sonic bug repellants and definitely not with sonic bug repellant smartphone apps. They don't work. They never did. They never will. More »

BlackBerry PlayBook 4G LTE hands-on

BlackBerry PlayBook 4G LTE handson

RIM's attempts to get a cellular-equipped version of the BlackBerry PlayBook have been troubled, to say the least. The company signalled its intentions around Mobile World Congress last February, only to watch as carriers backed off -- partly as RIM focused its attention on LTE, and partly after carriers grew skittish over sales of the WiFi version. A year and a half later, we finally have an LTE version, and with a faster 1.5GHz processor to boot. But do 4G data and a processor bump make all the difference? And does the upgrade stand a realistic shot in a competitive field that has moved on since the original PlayBook? We'll find out in our hands-on.

Amazon Cloud Player now available on Sonos

Sonos Kindle Fire

Amazon has been busy making improvements to its Cloud Player. The company recently announced the ability to scan and match music and now it has made the service available on Sonos. So now if you store your music through Amazon, you can register and start playing your collection anywhere in the house, directly from your Sonos system.

To get started, you'll need a five-digit code from your Sonos controller, which will allow you to register through Amazon.com. Once it's registered, to find your collection on your controller, just select 'music' and then 'Amazon Cloud Player'.

There is a Sonos app available for the Kindle Fire and for other Android devices from the Google Play Store. Full press release after the break.

Current Caller ID app adds social info, weather details, suggests a good time to ring back

Current Caller ID

If staring at the incoming callers' visage just wasn't enough, Current's Caller ID might worth a try. The utility app adds a raft of extra detail to your smartphone when it rings, from recent tweets and status updates through to weather conditions and even location data. After loading up the app, you can connect to your Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn profiles, which Current Caller ID combines with your existing contact list. Based on your use history, the app will even offer up a time to return missed calls. There's the nice addition of some metrics between you and your phonebook, visualizing that precarious balance between text messages and calls with your significant other -- or a timegraph of when you call Mom. These stats are possibly more useful than the caller ID features, and while the design does jar a little with the typical Android aesthetic, it's hard to complain when the app's free. If you're willing to forgive those minor visual flaws, the download awaits at the source below.

Powdered Beer and Soda Makes Roughing It Not So Rough [Video]

Contraptions like the SodaStream let you mix up your own carbonated beverages at home, but the devices are far from portable. And carrying a six-pack or bottle of soda when camping is extra weight you don't need. Thankfully an enterprising gent named Pat has created a powdered beer and soda alternative that can be hydrated and carbonated using nothing more than a lightweight plastic bottle. More »
