How The iPad Keeps You Connected with Wi-Fi or 3G

Apple have done a great job of marketing their iPad device. Their strategies have gone a long way in convincing consumers that the device is the best on the market when it comes to browsing the Web or watching online streaming videos. The same can be said of connecting with friends via any social networking services according to the manufacturers.

These claims are backed up with some very sophisticated apps, features and services. The overall opinion of many industry pundits is that the device is a worthy competitor to netbooks. They believe that Steve Jobs and his team did a great job in developing the iPad even though there was a lot of scepticism when it was first launched onto the market.

The device is very fast and easy to use. It has built-in, high-speed 802.11a/b/g/n Wi-Fi which makes downloading files and streaming videos a cinch. Even when there is heavy gateway traffic or too many subscribers using the network, the device copes well making the experience a pleasant one. This is all thanks to the beefed-up Safari app and the latest Wi-Fi standard the device uses.

Apple claims that Safari is the fastest browser around which makes browsing the Internet a simple task that happens at lightening speed. One of the great features the iPad offers users is it’s capability to work on Wi-Fi as well as 3G. This means users will always be able to get on the Internet wherever they happen to be and don’t have to rely on ‘hot spots’ to stay connected.

Most Internet providers these days have 3G service and this means that iPad users can seamlessly swap over from Wi-Fi to 3G in an instant when they need to without having to contact another provider in order to do so.

Whenever an iPad user comes to the end of their surfing minutes, there’s an interactive push notification that pops up to let them know they need to either upgrade to the next data plan or switch to the latest Wi-Fi standard in their vicinity. Of course it goes without saying that the device has it’s own app to monitor and manage data usage.

ARM Reaches Out With Muscular 2nd-Gen GPUs

Mobile processor manufacturer ARM on Monday announced the second generation of its Mali T-600 family of graphics processor units, based on ARM's Midgard architecture. The new chips represent the second generation of Mali-T600 processors; the first was announced in November. "The graphics demands in smartphones, tablets and DTVs continue to accelerate," said Steve Steele, senior product manager at ARM. "GPU technology typically moves faster than CPU technology," added analyst Rob Enderle.

GoSum for iPhone and iPad review

If Words with Friends had a love affair with mathematics, the result would be GoSum. In fact, Words with Friends is to Scrabble, as GoSum is to Equate. Instead of trying to spell words on the game board, the goal of GoSum is to create valid arithmetic equations like 9 + 5 - 6 = 8. GoSum is fun, challenging, and educational.

The rules of GoSum are very simple. The board is a grid of equal signs and point multipliers. DN stands for double number, DS for double sum, TN for triple number, and TS for triple sum. For each turn, you get 5 numbers and 2 operators (+, -, x, ÷). Equal signs are "free" and don't require a token. Your job is to use your 5 numbers and 2 operators to create a valid equation. The equation must be constructed in a way so that all the operators you use are on one side of the equal sign so that the other side of the equal sign only has a number.

The main thing you want to keep in mind while playing GoSum is the Order of Operations: multiplication and division must be done before addition and subtraction. For example, 5 + 16 ÷ 4 = 9 since you must do 16 ÷ 4 first. Remember this simple rule, and you'll be a great player!

The only number tiles provided in GoSum are 0-9. For beginner players, this is enough, but for students who are learning or rusty with fractions, having tiles with fractions would be beneficial. The board game Equate includes fractions, so I hope GoSum mimics it and has an update that includes the ability to add fraction tiles to the game.

I also feel the restriction to only allowing operators on one side of the equal sign disappointing. This limits creativity by not allowing equations such as 84 ÷ 2 = 6 x 7.

There are two game modes for GoSum: Pass & Play and Multiplayer. Both modes allow up to 4 players at a time. Multiplayer is integrated with Facebook so that you can easily play against your friends.

The good

  • Great remake of the board game Equate
  • Improves arithmetic skills
  • Simple, yet challenging
  • Pass & Play and Multiplayer game modes

The bad

  • Can only put operators (+, -, x, ÷) on one side the equal sign
  • No option to add fraction tiles
  • Can't play against opponents via wifi or bluetooth (would be great for a classroom setting!)

The bottom line

GoSum is a fantastic game that can be enjoying by young children and adults alike. Even people who "aren't good at math" will have fun playing GoSum as it only requires basic arithmetic skills. I do wish it included the ability to challenge friends via wifi or bluetooth as it would be great for a classroom setting.

Skype now selling prepaid cards in Mexico, makes it easier to get unlimited calling plans

Believe it or not, prepaid cards are indeed a thing south of the US border. In fact, the majority of folks in Mexico often choose to go this route rather than sticking with some sort of monthly contract. Not surprisingly, Skype's done its homework and has taken note of this situation, as the Microsoft-owned service has announced its plans to start selling a couple of prepaid card options in Mexico. For starters, there's a 100 pesos (around $8) per-month deal which offers an unlimited calling plan to both mobile and landlines in the US, while the pay-as-you-go sheet costs 150 pesos but charges by the minute at a modest 30 cents and includes calls to more than 170 countries. According to Skype, these cards will be available at multiple stores all over Mexico, such as Best Buy, Radio Shack, 7 Eleven and El Palacio de Hierro.

British royal family announces iOS and Android wedding app

William and KateTo celebrate the imminent marriage of Prince William and Kate Middleton, the Royal Collection will release an Android an iOS app that chronicles the last seven royal marriages, including Queen Victoria's marriage to Prince Albert in 1840.

Ironically, the app won't actually feature anything to do with William and Kate's marriage -- rather, it will focus on the "tradition, splendor and romance" that are intrinsic to British royal marriages. "[The app] will share the stories of past royal weddings and offer a wealth of historical context for the ceremony on April 29."

Unfortunately, the app, which has been lumbered with the fantastically creative name of 'Royal App,' won't be available until April 18 -- just 11 days before Kate's big day. It won't be free, either: it'll cost the rather princely sum of £1.79, or three of your Tea Party-loving dollars. The money will go to the Royal Collection, though, which is a good cause!

SlingPlayer survey hints at possible expansion to game consoles

We haven't exactly been lacking in SlingPlayer-supporting devices as of late, but it looks like the placeshifting service could possibly be set to expand to an entirely new area: game consoles. That word comes from a new Sling survey obtained by Zatz Not Funny, which attempts to gauge customers' interest in a SlingPlayer app for game consoles (it specifically asks if they own an Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 or Wii). As you might expect, however, details are light beyond that, with the survey only mentioning that such an app would let you watch video from your SlingBox in full HD, and that you'd naturally be able to control it with your console's controller. Of course, while it does come directly from Sling itself, it is also still just a survey, so we wouldn't recommend getting your hopes up too much for the time being.
