Jot review - the simplest note-taking widget ever

Android Central

Jot is a simple, lightweight note-taking widget for Android that recently had a user interface overhaul. It is an absolutely pared-down set of widgets that very simply provide fast, clear access to a notepad from the home screen. You aren’t going to find a ton of fancy features here, but you will get fast, easy access to plain text.

Google bids $900 million for Nortel's patents to protect against litigation trolls

Nortel, once one of the biggest telecoms company in the world but now in the death throes of bankruptcy, has selected Google's $900 million bid for its patent portfolio as the stalking horse bid. This doesn't mean that Google will automatically win Nortel's massive array of telecoms patents, but it does mean that Google is the preferred buyer.

Google, which has a history of lobbying for patent law reform, has been the target of many patent litigation suits. Google's relative infancy means that it has a lot less patents in the vault than big-hitters like Microsoft, Oracle and IBM, and buying Nortel's portfolio of 6,000 patents could provide better protection against patent litigation in the future. It's worth noting that both Apple and RIM have showed interested in the portfolio, too.

Mashable speculates that the patents -- which are nearly all telecoms-related -- will be used to defend against Oracle's attacks on Android's use of Java. We reckon that Google is simply looking to cover its future endeavors in the world of networking. In the absence of patent law reform, and continued threats to net neutrality, owning a bunch of telecoms patents sounds like a very sensible move.

'Stained glass' nanotechnology capable of printing up to 100,000 dpi

100,000 dpi color image crafted by 'stained glass' nanotechnology

Researchers in Singapore have managed to create high-resolution color images several times sharper than typical methods using a metal-laced nanometer framework. While normal inkjet and laser jet printers can reel out up to 10,000 dots per inch, this nanotech-based technique has a theoretical limit of around 100,000 dpi. The technique is closer to lithography than typical modern printing, and could pave the way for future high-resolution reflective color displays and high-density optical storage. Scientists crafted precisely patterned metal nano structures, and designed the surface to specifically reflect the intended color. According to project leader, Dr Joel Yang, "The team built a database of color that corresponded to a specific nanostructure pattern, size and spacing," with an ultra-thin metal film spread across the image activating these "encoded" colors. Looks like yet another reason to upgrade our dull fleshy retinas.

Google Cutting Motorola Staff by 20 Percent in Search of Profits

Google is cutting 20 percent of Motorola Mobility’s staff, or about 4,000 of the subsidiary’s 20,000 employees, in a bid to return the phone and tablet maker to profitability.

In a filing submitted to the Securities and Exchange Commission detailing the plans, Google didn’t single out any specific parts of the company for the layoffs, but it was noted that Motorola’s product line would change as a result of the changes, which will include some office and plant closures as well.

“Two-thirds of the reduction is set to occur outside of the U.S.,” Google wrote in the filing. “In addition, Motorola plans to close or consolidate about one-third of its 90 facilities, as well as simplify its mobile product portfolio — shifting the emphasis from feature phones to more innovative and profitable devices.”

Google closed its $12.5 billion takeover of Motorola Mobility in May. Shortly thereafter, Google appointed Dennis Woodside as the subsidiary’s new CEO. Woodside has no background in consumer electronics, the mobile industry or engineering. Rather, Woodside is a mergers and acquisitions lawyer who has been with Google since 2003, and oversaw the company’s efforts to purchase Motorola Mobility.

The job cuts and facility closures are all being made with an eye toward making Motorola a self-sufficient, profitable entity, Google said in the filing, noting that Motorola Mobility “lost money in fourteen of the last sixteen quarters.”

It’s unclear if the decision to make the job cuts came from Woodside and Motorola, or Google and its chief executive, Larry Page. Google has said in the past that it would let Motorola run as a company independent of its richer, more profitable parent.

Officials at Google and Motorola were unavailable on Monday to comment beyond the SEC filing, which was first reported on by The Next Web.

The moves, of course, won’t come without a cost. “Google expects to incur a severance-related charge of no greater than $275 million, which it believes will be largely recognized in the third quarter, with the remaining severance-related costs recognized by the end of 2012,” the filing said. “Google also expects to incur other restructuring charges related to the actions described above, the majority of which will be recognized in the third quarter. Although Google cannot currently predict the amount of these other charges at this time, these additional charges could be significant.”

New Firefox Nightly and Aurora logos unearthed, and how to enable channel switching

Firefox Nightly and Aurora logos
Later today, Firefox will undergo its biggest developmental upheaval ever. Mozilla-central, the source of nightly builds, will be renumbered to version 5 -- and at long last, after years of wallowing around version 1, Mozilla's rendering and layout engine, Gecko, will also have its version number updated to match Firefox.

Shortly thereafter, Firefox's new channel system will be implemented. Firefox 5a2 will be introduced as the first Aurora build, and we should also see a Firefox 6 Nightly build. While we we're not sure where they came from, one Sören Hentzschel seems to have unearthed the new Nightly and Aurora logos (see above), along with new About Firefox dialogs (after the break).

In other news, if you want to take a sneak peek at the new 'channel changing' technology that will be introduced in upcoming Firefox builds, head to about:config and create a new string called app.update.desiredChannel -- the value doesn't matter. Then open Help > About Firefox and you'll be able to switch channel, but it doesn't do anything just yet (image after the break). Here's hoping that Firefox channel switching is smoother than Chrome.

Must See HDTV (August 13th - 19th)

With the Olympics finally concluded, it's back to our regular programming. While that includes a number of premieres this week including such highlights as Oh Sit!, a musical chairs game show (really), Stars Earn Stripes and BBC America's first original series Copper, there's also a long list of anticipated Blu-ray releases like Shaft and this weekend, The Hunger Games. Look below for the highlights this week, followed after the break by our weekly listing of what to look out for in TV, Blu-ray and videogames.

Jaws

Just in time for Shark Week, Steven Spielberg's classic Jaws is here on Blu-ray looking and sounding better than ever. There's a bunch of special features included but the main attraction is that massive reason to never, ever go in the water again. Check out a quick clip about the restoration embedded after the break.
($17.99 on Amazon)

The Closer / Major Crimes

Tonight as The Closer ends with star Kyra Sedgwick leaving the show, Major Crimes picks up the baton as Mary McDonnell (of Battlestar Galactica)'s Captain Raydor takes over the unit. We'll see if the changeover happens smoothly enough to keep this police procedural humming, but there seems little reason to believe it won't.
(9 & 10 PM, TNT, August 13th)

The Raid: Redemption

This Indonesian martial arts flick contains some of the hardest hitting action sequences we've seen and definitely counts as a must-see for fans of hand to hand combat, currently rocking an 85 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Following a police unit trapped in a criminal-infested building on an ill-fated attempt to capture a gang leader, it doesn't have the largest budget of 2012 or the most plot development, but who needs those anyway? If you're still unsure about thisone, check after the break for a featurette on the film's score as well as a claymation remake of many key scenes.

New software uses facial recognition to defend against prying eyes

Having the right programs and hardware to keep the information on your display safe from prying eyes is never a bad idea, and new software from Oculis Labs offers a very interesting take on how to do just that. It's called PrivateEye, and it utilizes facial recognition to automatically pixelate the contents of your display when you look away.

If you step away from your system and someone else decides to sit down and poke around, PrivateEye will present a confusing jumble of garbled text. It'll even notify you if someone tries to peek over your shoulder -- and display a picture of your peeping Tom, throw up an alert, or sound an alarm.

Check out the video embed after the break, and share your thoughts in the comments!

South Korea Sharpens Its Censorship Knife

South Korea is engaging in the sort of Internet censorship usually associated with China. A recent report ticks off a handful of examples of Great Firewall-esque meddling: Someone who called the president a bad word via Twitter had his account blocked; a judge who claimed that the president was out to screw over people who challenged his authority on the Web was fired; even pornography is iffy. South Korea is a democratic nation and is among the world's most wired countries.

Qt's Move Gives FOSS the Jitters

There's been much ado about Linux desktops in recent months, but few would dispute KDE's prominence among them. That, indeed, is one of the many reasons there's been so much concern over Nokia's impending sale of the Qt toolkit, upon which KDE is based. "There is no question that Qt will continue to be actively developed on some level regardless of what Nokia chooses to do with the assets," wrote Ars Technica's Ryan Paul early this month, for example. "There are a number of risks, however."
