Would You Pay to Use Twitter? [Chatroom]

App.net is a new fee-based, ad-free, realtime social feed—think Twitter, but with a price. But, you see, I already like Twitter. A lot. And I'm pretty comfortable with my whole profile: who I follow, who follows me, etc. I don't quite feel like leaving for something newer, even if it is ad-free. And especially if it comes at a price (which, in this case, it does). More »

How Your Brain Cleans Itself [Science]

Your brain needs to clean itself. Not because it's cluttered with inane thoughts or clogged by your filthy sense of humor, but because—like every other organ—it creates waste products. Now, scientists have worked out how it keeps itself clean. More »

Install the Windows Phone 7 NoDo update regardless of your carrier

windows phone 7 nodoSome of you who own Windows Phone 7 devices are still waiting for your pre-NoDo preparation update -- never mind NoDo itself. A few workarounds have been posted, but unfortunately they didn't work unless your carrier had completed testing and was ready to schedule the update.

Now, however, the Chevron WP7 team's Chris Walshie has delivered a handy little utility that will allow you to update any Windows Phone 7 device -- regardless of your carrier.

  1. Download and install the Windows Phone Support Tool (x86 or x64) and the ChevronWP7 Updater (x86 or x64)
  2. Launch ChevronWP7 Updater and select your language. If your language isn't listed, stop and do not update.
  3. If were running WP7 build 7004 (you can verify in Zune) then run the updater twice.
Once the process completes, you should be able to copy and paste to your heart's content. Let's just hope all this update foolishness gets sorted out before we're supposed to receive Mango.

Oculus Rift's latest VR headset prototype gets a showing at Gamescom 2012 (hands-on)

Oculus Rift's latest prototype gets a showing at Gamescom 2012 handson

"This is the latest prototype," the Oculus guys tell us. That's great, now strap us in. The team decided to make a sudden stop in Germany ahead of appearances back in the US over the next few weeks -- and we're glad, because it meant we got to call in on them and grab some time with the Oculus Rift. If you didn't know, the Rift is a Kickstarter-funded VR gaming headset (stay with us) that's caught the attention of several games developers -- most notably John Carmack. He liked it so much, in fact, that he developed a special Rift-ready version of Doom 3 for the headset and Doom 4 will also be heading to the VR peripheral too. We got to play with the earlier game and while there's a video after the break, we reckon you'll really need to try this in person to fully grasp how the Oculus Rift plays. Check out our impressions after the break.

PSX games now available in the Android Market, if you own an Xperia Play

PlayStation One games on the Android Market
If you're lucky enough to own an Xperia Play -- Sony Ericsson's new Gingerbread-powered smartphone-cum-gamepad -- you can now buy PlayStation (PSX) titles from the Android Market.

There are five titles currently available, all priced at £3.99: Syphon Filter, MediEvil, Cool Boarders 2, Destruction Derby, and Jumping Flash. They don't have an American price yet, but that will surely change once the Xperia Play launches in the States.

Two important questions remain unanswered: How big are these games? The Market descriptions say the games are only 5MB, but that sounds incredibly unlikely -- and more importantly, will it be possible to 'spoof' the Xperia Play and download PSX games onto other Gingerbread-powered phones, like the Nexus S?

In other news, the PlayStation emulator PSX4droid was recently removed from the Android Market. This obviously has nothing to do with today's release of first-party PlayStation games.

Personal Activity Monitor tracks time you spend using desktop apps

personalactivitymonitor
Up until a couple of years ago, I used to turn to RescueTime to figure out how I spend my time online. Then it got too complex, and I stopped using it. Personal Activity Monitor is like a vastly dumbed-down version of RescueTime, and I mean that as a compliment. It's free and bare-bones -- all it does is track what applications you're using and for how long.

A big drawback at this point is that it doesn't integrate with Web browsers to help you analyze how you spend your time on the Web. Still, if your work doesn't require constant Web app use, knowing how long you've used a browser overall might be enough to help you manage your time.

This is far from the only application in this space -- alternatives such as Slife and Chrometa are full-featured and impressive -- but PAM is good option for those who want a nice, simple tracker.

Tech Tools to Ease the Strain of the Nomadic Life

Ah, the nomadic life. Nothing beats a handshake and the pressing of flesh in business. Yet a life on the road takes its toll -- but that may be changing. There's a great anecdote about the musician who spent so much time on the road, traveling from town to town, that rather than attempt to make his hotel room homey as he traveled the country, he had his bedroom at home decorated like a motel room -- resplendent in Holiday Inn green and complete with chrome security clothes hangers. He would thus feel at home on the road.

London 2012 Paralympics official UK app available now

Android Central

The British public is still on a high following the resounding success of the London 2012 Olympic Games. The action isn't over though, as after a 2 week break we have the 2012 London Paralympic Games to look forward too. Tickets have been going like hotcakes, and many will be left disappointed at being unable to attend the events. Fear not though, as with the main games, an official app is here to keep you in the know.

The Paralympics are not being broadcast in the UK by BBC as the main games were, so their Olympic app won't be of much use. Instead, Channel 4 is the official Paralympic Broadcaster, and as such has released their own official Paralympics application. All the expected is contained within, a live text stream, medals table, results, news etc. Apart from the news and photos, the app is pretty redundant at the moment. But, come Aug 29 when the games begin, the various sections will start lighting up.

Oh, and unlike the BBC Olympics app, this has no troubles with tablets. We've tried it out with a Nexus 7 and it works just fine.

HSN has a Special Discount on Beats Studio HD Headphones Today (8/17) and We’re also Giving a Pair Away!

This post brought to you by HSN. All opinions are 100% mine.

Do you think your headphones or earbuds make your favorite music sound the way the artist intended it to sound? Probably not. In 2006, Dr. Dre, legendary rap artist and producer, and Jimmy Lovine, Chairman of Interscope Geffen A&M Records and American Idol mentor established Beats Audio to create studio-quality sound for artists, audiophiles and everyday listeners like you and I. Beats headphones and speakers have been engineered with an advanced speaker design and powered amplification that are able to reproduce the full spectrum of sound so that you’re able to hear your music with the same sonic quality heard in professional recording studios.

HSN sent me a pair of Beats Studio HD Headphones to try. I was impressed with these phones from the minute I opened the zippered case. First of all, the headphones fold up to make them more compact and easier to fit in your gear bag. They also look cool and are available in several colors. Next up, the adjustable headband and the ear pads have a lot of cushion which make the headphones comfortable to wear for hours. Style and comfort are great, but how do they sound? I’m happy to report that they sound excellent. I especially enjoyed using them to listen to a few podcasts and some of my favorite smooth jazz. They live up to their “Beats” name due to their thumpy bass.

Want to try a pair for yourself? There are two ways to do this.  You can buy a pair by taking advantage of HSN Today’s Special – only available on 8/17 special discount on the Beats Studio HD headphones which includes an exclusive offer not available anywhere else. In addition to the discount, they’ll also SHIP FOR FREE at HSN.  Low on cash? No worries, you can also use HSN’s FlexPay system, which allows you to pay for them in installments with no additional charges. $60 will get these headphones on your noggin ASAP. Shop all Beats products available on HSN.
