In a bid to give Canon's PowerShot G1 X a run for its money, Nikon is pulling out every stop it knows with the introduction of the Coolpix P7700. It's a decidedly prosumer model, priced at a buck under $500 and equipped with a 1/1.7-inch 12.2 megapixel BSI CMOS sensor, 7.1x zoom lens (with a maximum aperture of f/2), 1080p movie mode, Lens-Shift Vibration Reduction and full manual control for those who abhor automatic captures. On the opposite side of the spectrum, there's the $179 Coolpix S01 -- a bantam P&S camera that's bound to snake its way into stockings this holiday season. Specs-wise, it's packing a 2.5-inch touchpanel, electronic VR, a 10 megapixel CCD sensor, built-in flash and a stainless exterior that measures just 3.1- x 2.1- x 0.7-inches. It'll ship alongside the P7700 this September, but it's on you to pick between the red, silver, white and pink color options. The full releases are embedded after the break.

Mozilla Messaging, citing Mozilla's increased focus on Web-borne communications, will be reintegrating with Mozilla Labs. The Messaging subsidiary was formed in 2008 to focus on Thunderbird, but given Mozilla Labs' current focus on identity and contact management, it now makes sense for the groups to be merged. Thunderbird will be unaffected by the change -- some URLs might change, but that's it -- and presumably Messaging's F1 and Raindrop will thrive in the Labs playground. What this means for the end user -- for the hundreds of millions of Firefox users -- is that the next big additions will be communication- and messaging-oriented. Contacts and F1 will be almost certainly be baked into Firefox 5 or 6, both of which will be released this year -- and, who knows, there might be something else even more exciting up Mozilla Labs' sleeve!Mozilla Messaging reintegrates with Labs, unifies focus on Web-based communication originally appeared on Download Squad on Tue, 05 Apr 2011 07:00:00 EST. If you like quirky designs and love your iPhone then this particular Kickstarter project may be just up your street. Say hello to Bloombox, no that’s not a typo, it’s a play on words to pretty much describe exactly what this project is about. It’s first and foremost a charging dock for your iPhone but also offers an acoustic amplifier through It’s simplistic hollow square framed design along with a place to plant a few bits of greenery.
The Bloombox is made out of ceramic molds created at Mudshark Studios. Each Bloombox is painted with a light matte glaze in either white or black. The Bloombox was born out of the combination of my three driving passions and my own need for a dock. Design, ceramics and technology (namely Apple products) all culminated together to create a habitable environment and acoustics for iPhone and iPod docks out of one single piece of ceramic.
The design aesthetics are simple and compliment Apples iPhone & iPod devices. The Bloombox was designed to have enough room to create a functioning environment for most small plants and also amplify the audio from your device by 30 percent.
The Bloombox is certainly different and not something that I have seen before. It would certainly not look out of place in a smart apartment or luxury home. The thought of watering plants right under your iPhone makes me a little concerned; so you would have to make sure it was done very carefully.
If you like the idea of the Bloombox dock, you can become an early adopter with a pledge of $50 or more to secure one should they make it into production. The Bloombox currently has around $3,200 of pledges and it needs to hit over $5,000 to gain enough to be funded; it still has 32 days to go. As with all of these Kickstarter projects, just because a particular item reaches its funding total doesn't guarantee it will go into production.
Do you think the Bloombox is a good idea or is it a little bit over the top?

Bots -- like the kind which automate IRC rooms and Google Wave -- are a good thing to know about. There are plenty of useful bots worth knowing about, too, including the Google Talk Guru. Just add guru@googlelabs.com to your GTalk buddies, and you can start firing off questions. Lifehacker suggests that the same types of queries supported by Google SMS will work, though we didn't have any luck getting a response out of the Guru with phrases like "score detroit red wings" or "sushi R3N 1Y1." Still, Guru does answer a good variety of questions and it works right within your favorite IM app. It's well worth adding to your friend list, especially for getting answers on the go on your mobile device of choice.Google Talk Guru answers questions via your IM app originally appeared on Download Squad on Wed, 30 Mar 2011 09:30:00 EST. Roomba fans will soon be able to take their laziness passion to the yard. Honda has announced a robotic lawnmower, called Miimo, that, like everyone’s favorite automated vacuum cleaner, moves in random patterns until it’s covered the prescribed area. Only instead of chasing dust bunnies in a house, Miimo takes about 3 millimeters off the top of owners’ lawns.
Miimo has sensors to help it avoid obstacles, and users prevent it from leaving the yard by burying wires along the borders. Honda says lift sensors shut down the spinning blades the moment anything causes Miimo to come off the ground. When it runs low, the mower returns to its base station to recharge.
Miimo, which will be available only in Europe when it comes out in early 2013 (no word on U.S. plans), will be offered in two different models, the 300 and the 500. The larger of the two can handle yards up to 3/4 of an acre in size, according to Honda. Prices will be 2,100 and 2,500 euros (about $2,600 and $3,000), respectively.
