Apple releases Mountain Lion 1082 build to devs, focuses on Facebook, iMessage and more

Shortly after letting the 10.8.1 Mountain Lion out of the bag, Cupertino's now released the next dotted version of its feline OS X to members of the developer community. According to the seed note, this early release will be focusing on a slew of social areas as well as other handy applications, including Facebook, Messages, Game Center, Reminders and, of course, the company's own web browser, Safari. As is usually the case with these young builds, Apple suggests you install it on a machine "you are prepared to erase if necessary," though something tells us you were already well aware of that. But in case you do want to install v10.8.2, you'll find the rest of the deets at the Apple Developer site linked below.

Nikon S800c – World First Android Powered Camera

Nikon just announced the world’s first digital camera that is powered by the Android operating system. Android version 2.3 Gingerbread to be specific. I’m not sure I really agree with the “world’s first camera powered by Android” desgination. I mean there have been a blue million Android smartphones with cameras and Android tablets with cameras. The new COOLPIX S800c features a resolution of 16MP, 10x optical zoom 4.5-45mm, a high resolution OLED touch screen with anti-reflection coating, SD/SDHC memory card slot, WiFi and GPS. Since it uses the Android OS, you will have access to Google Play and the ability to install apps on your camera. I can see the attraction of having a really good camera with the ability to upload pix directly to Facebook, Instagram, etc. But the S800c only has WiFi and v2.3 of Android isn’t even the latest and greatest. So it’s only slightly interesting to me. If you can’t wait to get your hands on one, it’s available in Black or White and will be priced at $349.95. You can pre-order it now from B&H Photo (affiliate link).

HTC Proto device renders leak, now where's that phone headed?

Android Central

What you see above are pictures of the potentially forthcoming HTC Proto, a low- to mid-range device slated to be the potential successor to the HTC One V. Right off, the Proto looks to sport more of the design language found on the One X and One S, with rounded corners and black casing, dropping the "chin" off the front. Around back, you see a smooth soft-touch looking surface and Beats Audio branding. Expected specs on this device are a 4-inch 480x800 (WVGA) screen, 1GHz dual-core snapdragon processor and a 5 megapixel camera.

Speculation is that this device may see a debut at IFA 2012, but we're not so sure. Also, it's a big world out there, and it's not uncommon to see a small, regional launch of a new low-range device. Be sure to follow all of our IFA coverage closely to see what's coming from HTC and happening in all things Android.

Tencent and TCL unveil Ice Screen: a 26-inch Android-based smart TV

Under the hood, the Android-powered television houses a dual-core Cortex A9 1GHz processor, a Mali 400 GPU, 4GB of RAM and support for a memory card of up to 32GB in size. An IR remote and an app for devices sporting version 2.2 or higher of Google's OS can be used to control the tube, which can sit horizontally or vertically in its stand. On the connectivity front, the panel packs Wi-Fi, a pair of USB ports, HDMI and a 3.5mm headphone jack. Flickr Android app gets updated, touts refreshed UI and camera selection

Flickr Android app gets a muchneeded update, touts refreshed UI and camera selection

Flickr's Android app has been around for nearly a year and was due for a tune-up to perform like its iOS sibling. First, a retooled UI touts a new navigation menu and the Explore section now does a better job of sorting shots according to nearby location and level of interest. In addition to the aforementioned photo library search, notifications, profile, camera and upload options fill out the rest of the main menu's tabbed options. Throughout the application, a pull down to refresh function keeps the most recent notifications and uploads at the top of the window. When the camera tab is tapped, you'll now be prompted to choose your camera or camera app of choice in order to capture the shot. Rounding out the improvements are improved overall search, the ability to edit details / metadata on pictures and HTML content in comments and descriptions. If you're looking to give the overhauled software a go, hit the source link below to snag it.

How Secure is My Password lets you know just that

howsecureismypassword
We've all heard it before; you need to select a lengthy password, one that's hard to guess. Not a dictionary word. And it has to have some capital letters in it too, and some digits, and a symbol or two won't hurt either.

That's a handy set of rules to keep in mind, but How Secure is My Password helps us understand why they're important.

It's basically like a full-screen version of one of those password-strength meters websites sometimes use. But instead of showing you a bar going from "weak" to "strong", it shows you an estimation of how long your password would take to crack. That's a much more visceral way to understand why your password is strong.

For example, when I entered "rabbit", it came back with "your password is one of the 500 most common passwords. It could be cracked almost instantly". "rabbit5" would take two hours, "$rabbit5" would take 38 days, and "$rabbitZ5" would take 237 years. It's quite enlightening to see what a difference three simple characters can make.
