TweetDeck to launch as HTML5 Web app, now accepting beta testers

When TweetDeck landed in the Chrome Web Store, it seemed like an indication that it might eventually evolve into a pure HTML5 Web app. Now it looks as though that's exactly what's going to happen, with TweetDeck announcing that a new, not-just-for-Chrome Web client is ready for beta testing.

It's a natural progression for TweetDeck, especially since its originally Adobe Air app is practically all Web code. TweetDeck Web will sport a feature set which is nearly identical to the Chrome app, with the notable exception of Twitter streaming.

Initially, TweetDeck is targeting Firefox 4 and 3.6, Google Chrome, and Safari. Opera and Internet Explorer 9 won't be invited to the dance until a bit later on.

If you'd like to get in on the TweetDeck Web beta, head on over and register -- or sign up using your existing TweetDeck account.

LG coincidentally announces production of new screens that sound just perfect for iPhone 5...

LG coincidentally announces production of new screens ahead of iPhone 5

LG Display has started to ramp up production of new displays, using in-cell technology that, coincidentally I'm sure, sound like perfect fits the rumored iPhone 5 that just might be announced at the rumored September 12 Apple event. Reuters scored comments from Han Sang-beom, chief executive of LG Display, which he gave reporters on Wednesday but which were embargoed until Thursday morning (?!).

"We just began mass production and we don't expect any disruption in supplies."

Reuters also, again, backs up the September 12 event date iMore first reported back in July, and reaffirms a 4-inch screen for the next iPhone with in-cell technology.

The iPhone screens will also be thinner than previous versions with the use of so-called in-cell panels. The new technology embeds touch sensors into the liquid crystal display, eliminating the touch-screen layer found in current iPhones.

So count LG and Sharp in the good to go category, which should help make sure Apple has plenty of screens to go around for what should be their biggest iPhone launch ever. While in previous year, including 2010, supply constraints on screen components were reportedly the reason for slower rollouts and lower iPhone and iPad availability, last year's iPhone 4S and this year's iPad 3 were among Apple's most aggressive rollouts ever. Given the massive Retina display in the new iPad, that's saying a lot.

iMore previously learned the new iPhone will become available for pre-order sometime following the event on September 12, go on sale in the US and other first-wave countries on September 21, and go on sale in second-wave countries on October 5.

In addition to a 4-inch, reportedly 16:9 display, the next iPhone is also rumored to have LTE 4G networking, a smaller Dock connector, a headphone jack at the bottom, and perhaps NFC capabilities as well.

We'll find out for sure in just under 3 weeks.

Words With Friends for Android updated, promises "smoother game experience"

wordswithfriends
As several of you noted in the comments to our post asking for cross-platform iOS/Android games, Words With Friends for Android does not provide the smoothest gaming experience... and that's being rather charitable.

You might be happy to hear that a couple of days ago Zynga released an update which promises to solve many of the Android-specific issues, such as notifications not popping up.

Sadly, installing the update is not a smooth experience; you have to manually uninstall the previous version, and then go to the Android Market and install it. What's nice is that it doesn't lose your saved games - this screenshot shows a game I've started before the update and continued after updating.

How's the new update working out for you? Let us know in the comments!

Reserve the Sharp AQUOS SH-10D on NTT DoCoMo from tomorrow, full launch next week

We knew the Sharp AQUOS SH-10D was due to hit NTT DoCoMo at some point this summer, and now we've got the full details. You can reserve yours through the carrier from tomorrow, and the proper launch will take place the following week on August 30th. The device will be available in the three colors you see above, and as it recently passed through the FCC, a trip to the US could also be in the cards. But unfortunately, that orange wallpaper is all too harsh a reminder of one that never ventured outside Japan.

Saying Happy Birthday to Your Friend on Facebook Is Meaningless [Video]

We've already told you that Facebook ruined your birthday. And it's so completely true! It's completely meaningless now, hordes of semi-friends and quasi-acquaintances fake like they care about you. Ugh. And maybe when the wall posts first start trickling in you're a little happy but as more and more keyboard vomit starts popping up, you tune 'em out. More »

Anons Pelt UK Authorities With Cyberattacks

Hacker group Anonymous is taking credit for hack attacks carried out on various UK government sites as retaliation for the handling of the Julian Assange case. Among the sites attacked were the UK Justice Department and the Department of Work and Pensions -- each of which went offline. The Anonymous Operations Twitter handle shot out tweets which seemed to take credit for the sites going down. UK authorities have been unyielding in their stance that Assange should be extradited to Sweden, where he faces sexual misconduct charges.

Scarlet Motors promises an open EV design process

Scarlet Motors launching today, promises an open EV design process

It's not every day that you see a new EV manufacturer get started; it's even less common when the company promises a switch-up of the typical automaker's formula. Scarlet Motors has made its formal debut with an aim towards the same kind of openness in its electric sports cars that founder Julien Fourgeaud would be familiar with from his days at Nokia and the Symbian Foundation. In addition to giving a peek behind the curtain, Tesla-style, Finland-based Scarlet wants future (and eventually current) drivers to influence the design choices themselves, both through a dedicated community as well as Facebook and Twitter. We'll get more details in time, but those that just can't wait can sign up to the community beta and help shape what might become their next ride.

Auslogics Disk Defrag 3.2 gets smarter, faster

auslogics defrag
Auslogics Disk Defrag has been part of my system maintenance toolkit for quite some time. With the release of version 3.2, it's now even better at tidying up and optimizing your system's hard disk drives. In addition to a cleaner, easier-to-use interface, Disk Defrag 3.2 offers improved single file and folder defragging, better processing of multiple disks, a simplified scheduling screen, and more informative tool tips. Auslogics has also fine-tuned the program's defragmentation and file consolidation algorithms.

For laptop users, there's a new option to lock the program if your system is running on battery power -- so scheduled operations don't kick in and drain your power source at an inopportune moment. If you happen to have an SSD installed in your PC, you can head to the Disk Defrag options and exclude it from scanning (many think that defragmenting an SSD is a very bad idea).

Auslogics Disk Defrag is a free download and works with most versions of Windows.
