Motorola launches 'You. On Display.' contest ahead of Sept. 5 event, wants to have you there

Android Central

Just a week before Motorola and Verizon kick things off at their September 5th event in New York City, Motorola has put up a Facebook contest to give 25 winners an opportunity to meet their product experts at an invite-only event. To get started, head to facebook and "like" the Motorola page, then click the "You. On Display." tab and follow the prompts. To enter, take a picture showing what Motorola means to you, and accompany it with a caption of less than 50 words.

The contest is open until 11:59 tomorrow (Wednesday) night, and is only open to residents of New York, New Jersey and Connecticut -- which makes sense considering the short notice. For everyone else, we'll see you back here in a week for our coverage of the event.

Harman Kardon Have Invaded Our Personal Space

Harman Kardon has made some of the most visually compelling speakers anywhere. I have owned three SoundSticks speakers through the years and loved them. Nothing looks like them. Now Harman Kardon have entered our personal space with a line of headphones and earphones.

The BT wireless over-ear headphones are Bluetooth-equipped with a built-in microphone and come equipped with a rechargeable battery. The CL on-ear headphones also have a mic that works with the iPhone, and they fold, making them good for commuting. Both headphones come with two headbands for large and smaller head sizes. They both have a classic, slightly retro design.

Both the AE and NI earphones have a 9mm dynamic speaker and 3-button remote mic for Apple iDevices. The AE version is cased in an aluminum housing and are tuned for enhanced bass with a  wider frequency response.

The BT headphone sells for $249.95 US and the CL is $199.95. The AE earphones are $149.95 and the NI can be had for $99.95. All are available now.

Tasty Planet is a fun flash game where you eat everything in sight

tastyplanet
So this professor comes up with a new toilet cleaner that works by "eating" the dirt; or so he thinks. That's how the plot starts for Tasty Planet. You play the role of the toilet cleaner, but you're not really a toilet cleaner after all -- you're a blob of gray goo that can eat anything that's smaller than yourself.

As you chomp away, you grow -- and as you grow, you can eat bigger and bigger stuff. The first level pits you against microscopic particles; by the time I stopped playing, I got all the way to eating cats and dogs. I know that sounds disturbing, but it's a really cute game, and there's no gore or anything like that.

Supposedly you keep growing and growing until you're able to eat whole planets (hence the name). The challenge factor comes when you realize you can't touch any critter larger than yourself - you'll get "bitten" and become smaller. In the beginning you're so small, that a single touch can kill you. Later on, you're big enough that touching larger animals doesn't kill you on the spot, but it does reduce your size. Each level is timed, so if you're not large enough by the time your clock runs out, you need to start again. As long as you don't touch the larger animals, you should be fine.

All in all, a fun, addictive little game. It's available for iOS, too.

Survival Lab is a fun pixelated game where dying doesn't matter

Survival Lab
In most games, dying is a bad thing. You have to start all over again, or at least revert to the last save point and lose some progress. Not so in Survival Lab: in this pixelated gem you play as a lone individual pitted against ruthless weapons in a sealed chamber. You have to run, jump and duck, collecting little yellow things (I have no idea what they're called).

For each donut-like yellow thing you pick up, you gain a bit of experience. If you manage to collect several in a row without getting hit, this counts as a combo. You can see my mad combo skills in the screenshot, of course. Collecting combos is a good thing, because a ten-point combo gives you for more experience than just collecting ten dounts one by one (getting hit in-between).

Having experience is useful, because once you die, you get to a screen where you can upgrade your skills. You can learn to run faster, double-jump (and then double-jump higher), and duck. You can also gain more armour so that getting hit won't kill you so quickly.

What makes this simple game so addictive is that when you die, your experience doesn't reset. You just go back to the same level, or another level of your choosing, and keep accumulating more and more experience. Lots of fun, especially if you're into the whole retro-gaming thing.

Flickr adds to sharing options, now easier to share photos across the Web

flickr
It sure is nice to see some new developer action over at Flickr. The relatively slow-moving photo-sharing service has just announced a new sharing update, which consists of several new and easy ways to embed or link to your photos:
  • Share from Photo page: There's a new sharing option on each and every photo page. When logged off, the button shows only Facebook and Twitter options. But once you log on, you get Tumblr and Blogger too, and can configure other sharing venues as well.
  • Share non-public content on Facebook: This doesn't sound like a great idea, but you now can share private photos on Facebook if you're so inclined (and if you trust your privacy settings).
That's the gist of the update; it makes it easier to show off your pretty pictures in a plethora of places.

South Korean Court Rules Apple and Samsung Both Owe One Another Damages

Apple and Samsung’s international courtroom tribulations took a slight turn for the worse for all parties involved Friday. A South Korean court ruled that both companies infringed on one another’s intellectual property and owe each other damages.

The Seoul Central District Court ruled that Samsung violated one of Apple’s utility patents, over the so-called the “bounce-back” effect and slide-to-unlock features in iOS, and that Apple was in violation of two of Samsung’s wireless patents. Apple’s claims that Samsung copied the designs of the iPhone and iPad were denied.

The monetary penalties are a drop in the ocean to the tech titans: Samsung owes Apple $22,000 (25 million Korean won), while Apple needs to pay Samsung $35,300 (40 million won). Far worse for both, the court is temporarily banning sales of Apple’s iPhone 4 and iPad 2, and Samsung’s Galaxy Nexus, Galaxy SII, Galaxy Tab, and Galaxy Tab 10.1 in the country.

It is “highly likely” that Apple and Samsung will petition the court over this injunction, Kim Mun-sung, a court spokesman, told PCWorld.

Intellectual patent attorney Linda D. Kennedy told Wired via e-mail that such an outcome could happen here in the U.S. — but it’s no more probable than any other result. However, the case in South Korea likely differed from what’s happening stateside due to possible variations in the patents involved. “Generally, patent rights are territorial. Despite efforts toward global harmonization, differences remain from country to country,” Kennedy said. “Those differences can be significant.”

Apple and Samsung have been embroiled in tense intellectual property litigation across the globe for over a year now. Kennedy said one theme comes to mind regarding Apple and Samsung’s ongoing case, “No holds barred and no expenses spared — across the board and the borders.”

In the U.S., the duo have been duking it out in a jury trial in San Jose federal court for the past four weeks. With closing arguments completed earlier this week, the trial is now in the hands of jurors unless the parties end up settling outside of court — an unlikely scenario. Apple is requesting damages of $2.5 billion from Samsung for its alleged patent violations; Samsung is requesting Apple pay $519 million in damages.

FAA Study May Loosen Restrictions on In-Flight Gadget Use

The Federal Aviation Administration announced Monday it will study the use of portable electronic devices on airliners, potentially opening the door to allowing greater use of smartphones, tablets or e-readers during flights. Currently, the FAA requires airlines to determine which devices can safely be used in-flight, and all U.S. airlines now ban the use of devices such as mobile phones, laptops and e-readers during takeoff and landing. The FAA is re-examining that policy, however.
