Exclusive: Motorola Droid RAZR M 4G LTE gets hands-on treatment (video)

Motorola Droid RAZR M 4G LTE given proper handson treatment video

There's no stopping the torrential downpour of information coming out about the Motorola Droid RAZR M 4G LTE (codenamed Scorpion Mini), but we finally have some real pictures showing off the device that, this time last week, was nothing more than a mere rumor. Our source had the opportunity to play with the RAZR M for a solid amount of time, and told us that the Snapdragon S4 processor is "fantastic" and the lithium polymer battery resulted in a full day of heavy usage. We've got a few more images of the unannounced device below (it appears the top back panel experienced a run-in with a hard surface before the images were taken), and we also have a video showing off the boot-up process and settings menu after the break.

[Thanks, Anonymous!]

Watch Made From Mount Everest Rock Is Still Cheaper Than Climbing It Yourself [Watches]

You might scoff at spending almost seventeen grand on a relatively boring watch that's crafted from a chunk of rock brought down from Everest's summit. But when you consider an expedition up the world's tallest mountain can cost as much as $83,000, this timepiece actually becomes a slightly more affordable way to visit the top of the world. Kind of. TDK introduces new wireless Boombox and two new weatherproof speakers

TDK introduces new wireless Boombox and two new weatherproof speakers

TDK's Boombox rocked minds and windows alike with its modern take on a retro classic. Buoyed by its success, the casette-maker of old is back with new audio hardware at IFA. Three devices, again on the speaker front. First up is the Boombox Wireless, which is a similar, but updated, design from the original and features not only streaming sans cables via Bluetooth, but inductive charging, too. If you don't want to cut the cord completely, there's a 3.5mm aux input, USB slot for charging plus an FM radio and headphone output. Next up is the Wireless Weatherproof Speaker, which despite being described as "rugged" and boasting an IP 64 weather compliant design, looks like any regular device. It, too, has Bluetooth streaming and inductive charging, along with 3.5mm input and built-in microphone. If these two were all looking a little bit oblong, then the curious Wireless Charging Cube might be for you. Yep, it's Bluetooth streaming and the same wire-free charging, but this time that goes both ways. Plonk your Qi induction compatible device on top, and it'll juice that while you jam (there's a non wireless charging / charger version also.) How much do these slabs of sound cost? The Boombox is $399, the Wireless Weatherproof is $250 while the Wireless Charging Cube is $399. Not a peep on availability at this time, we'll connect you up though, once we get it.

States reach $69 million settlement with three publishers in e-book price fixing case

When the US Department of Justice sued Apple and five major book publishers over alleged e-book price rigging, it immediately became clear that a few of these companies would do just about anything to avoid trial. That same day, three of the publishers -- HarperCollins, Simon & Schuster and Hachette -- elected to settle with the DoJ. Now, those same three publishers have reached an agreement in 49 states (all but Minnesota), wherein consumers will receive a combined $69 million in compensation.

Specifically, the payout applies to people who bought agency-priced e-books between April 1, 2010 and May 21, 2012. Interestingly, the payout includes folks who bought e-books from Macmillan and Penguin, even though those two publishers aren't settling. As for making sure people get paid, Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Google, Sony, Apple and Kobo have agreed to identify and contact affected customers. According to ABC News, most of these retailers will give customers the option of receiving a check or a credit toward future purchases. Sony, meanwhile, will automatically issue checks, while Google will direct customers to an online submission form where they can file a claim. Whatever the method, payments are expected to begin 30 days after the settlement is approved. The DoJ settlement, which is separate from the agreement with the 49 states, is still awaiting clearance.

Visualized: Samsung's eerily familiar IFA Smart Lounge

So many tired and weary feet at this show, who wouldn't want a nice lounge? Particularly a Smart one? And hey, Samsung's tenty IFA lounge seemed oddly welcoming -- at least to us Engadget folk. You'd think Samsung would be a little more cautious these days...

Samsung Reveals S-Pen-Toting Windows 8 Tablet-Laptop Hybrids

Samsung’s new Series 5 and Series 7 Slates easily convert from tablet to laptop. Image: Samsung

With the official launch of Windows 8 fast approaching, Microsoft’s manufacturing partners are starting to debut new hardware designed specifically for the touch-optimized operating system. Samsung is the latest of the bunch, showing off two new tablet-laptop hybrid devices, the Series 5 and Series 7 Slate PCs.

The two ultra-portable devices share the same form factor: an 11.6-inch tablet with a detachable keyboard. When the keyboard is attached, the Series 5 and 7 look indistinguishable from clamshell notebooks.

The tablet connects to the keyboard via a mechanical hinge, which ensures the two pieces don’t accidentally separate while you’re using them. I had some time to test the mechanical hinge out, and although it’s not as elegant a solution as magnets — as seen with the Smart Cover and the iPad, or the Touch Cover and Surface — it is significantly more secure.

The Series 5 Slate features a 1366 x 786 resolution display, while the slightly more advanced Series 7 has a 1920 x 1080 display. The Series 7 also has more powerful internals, with an Intel Core i5 processor, 4GB of RAM and a 128GB SSD. The Series 5 is targeted more toward the casual user, with an Intel two-watt processor, 2GB of RAM and a 64GB SSD.

Naturally, both devices sport 10-point touchscreens to take advantage of the new tile-based Windows 8 experience. The two hybrid PCs also come with Samsung’s signature S Pen, which is housed in a slot along the back of the tablet portion. The S Pen, which made its debut with the Galaxy Note phone, has 1,024 levels of sensitivity. It’s not hard to imagine the pen being useful for taking notes or detailed creative work.

Both the Series 5 and 7 weigh in at less than 2 pounds — specifically, the Series 7 weighs 1.89 pounds and the Series 5 is 1.65 pounds.

The Series 7 Slate will cost $1,200 when it debuts; the Series 5 will be available at a slightly more budget-friendly $750 with the keyboard, and $650 without. The devices will be available for purchase on Oct. 26, the same day as Windows 8′s public launch.

Asus and Acer showed off similar devices to Samsung’s slates at Computex earlier this summer. It’s clear that Windows 8 is driving manufacturers to create new types of hardware experiences. You can expect to see even more of these hybrid PCs coming from other manufacturers like HP, Toshiba, Dell and Lenovo in the very near future.

Flickr adds to sharing options, now easier to share photos across the Web

flickr
It sure is nice to see some new developer action over at Flickr. The relatively slow-moving photo-sharing service has just announced a new sharing update, which consists of several new and easy ways to embed or link to your photos:
  • Share from Photo page: There's a new sharing option on each and every photo page. When logged off, the button shows only Facebook and Twitter options. But once you log on, you get Tumblr and Blogger too, and can configure other sharing venues as well.
  • Share non-public content on Facebook: This doesn't sound like a great idea, but you now can share private photos on Facebook if you're so inclined (and if you trust your privacy settings).
That's the gist of the update; it makes it easier to show off your pretty pictures in a plethora of places.

Apple orders iCab iOS browser to cripple JavaScript modules

The developer of iCab Mobile, a feature-rich alternative to the Safari Web browser on iPad and iPhone, has been ordered by Apple to remove its ability to download and install JavaScript modules.

Presumably it's not the fact that iCab can execute JavaScript that's causing Apple to apoplectically puff and splutter, but rather its ability to download modules. Both Apple and Google frown upon apps that contain market-like functionality, and someone at Apple probably thought that iCab's JavaScript modules looked like a bit too much like discrete apps.

Alexander Clauss, iCab's developer, has rather a lot to say on the matter. "Maybe if I would have called the modules 'smart bookmarks' and would have made installing them much more complicated, Apple would have never asked to remove the ability to download them from the internet. The great user experience of installing modules has probably created a suspicion that these modules are more than just a piece of JavaScript code. From a pure technical point of view, if Apple does not allow to download modules (JavaScript code), Apple would also have to disallow to load web pages in general, because these do also contain JavaScript code."

In conclusion, to circumvent Apple's draconian decree, iCab Mobile now simply comes bundled with some 20 JavaScript modules. The ability to download modules made by third-party developers has been disabled, however -- but even then, Clauss says that you can simply contact him and ask for your module to be bundled with the next version of iCab.

HTML5 MP3 player lets you listen to your music library inside your browser

html5 browser mp3 audio player
While this slick little HTML5 audio player might not pack all of the features of your favorite desktop media application, it's still a very cool demonstration of what a Web app can do with access to local resources -- like MP3 and OGG files.

Just fire up http://antimatter15.github.com/player/player.html in your HTML5-compatible browser and browse to the topmost folder in your music library. The app will quickly build an index of all your tunes and let you start listening right inside your Web browser. Click on the filter library text, and you can enter a search string -- results load as you type.

There's a volume control, shuffle mode, play/pause control, and you can click and drag to skip forward or rewind during playback. As OMG! Ubuntu points out, you can even save the app to your hard drive and run it offline, which is pretty darn cool.

Not all browsers are equal when it comes to HTML5 implementation, of course. We found that Chrome worked the best, and Firefox was OK. It's also worth noting that this music player comes from the same developer that created one of our favorite restartless Firefox 4 add-ons, drag2up.
