Purported Nokia Lumia 820, 920 Pureview pics arrive on Twitter

Our old friend, the @evleaks Twitter account is back, claiming that it's gotten the first official shots of Nokia's Lumia 820 and 920 with Pureview. The terse tweets claim that the 820 is a 4.3-inch handset, while the 4.5-inch 920 will arrive with Nokia's magical new imaging technology. We're understandably skeptical, given the small size of the lens on the 920 (pictured, left) compared to the 808, but we can't fault the feed's track record for leaks so far.

Eyes on with the new Samsung Galaxy Camera accessories

Samsung Galaxy Camera Accessories.

With every camera comes camera accessories, and Samsung's new Galaxy Camera is no different. On show at the Samsung booth at IFA 2012 in Berlin is a selection of cases and other interesting items for future Galaxy Camera owners.

Camera cases are to be expected, and there are the usual array of generic looking carrying cases as well as carry cases that look a little more tailored to the device. Additionally, there are a pretty decent choice of protective shells shaped to the Galaxy Camera that look to be available in a whole variety of colors, some more daring than others.

There is also some pretty interesting stuff on the horizon for the Galaxy Camera, including wireless charging. We're told this isn't something that will be ready at launch, and that what we see on show today is more of a design concept of something they're planning in the future. The other concept accessories shows off some professional looking add-ons, so it goes to show that Samsung is very serious about this device.

As ever, we've got photos. Check them out after the break.

Meet the First Windows Phone 8: Samsung’s ATIV S

Samsung’s ATIV S is the first official Windows Phone 8 device. Image: Microsoft

Samsung revealed the world’s first Windows Phone 8 handset, dubbed the ATIV S. The company announced the ATIV S at the IFA conference in Berlin on Wednesday, showing off a 4.8-inch smartphone powered by a dual-core Qualcomm chip. Microsoft revealed even more details about the phone in a blog post.

The smartphone has a HD Super AMOLED display made from Corning Gorilla Glass 2 and features a 1.5GHz dual-core Qualcomm processor. As for cameras, there’s an 8-megapizel rear camera and a 1.9-megapixel front-facing one. The phone comes in a 16GB or 32GB model, and both come with 1GB of RAM on board. Battery life should be fairly impressive with the device’s 2300mAh battery (for comparison, the iPhone has a 1432mAh battery). And as suspected from Microsoft’s Windows Phone 8 reveal earlier this summer, the ATIV S also has a MicroSD slot for expanded storage and support for NFC.

From the body alone, it looks very similar to Samsung’s Galaxy S II. It has the same rectangular shape with rounded corners — yes, the very design that Apple sued Samsung for — and is just 8.7mm thick.

Additionally, Samsung announced its first Windows RT tablet at IFA, named the ATIV Tab. The 10.1-inch tablet sports a 1366 x 786 resolution display, a 1.5GHz dual-core processor and 2GB of RAM. It comes in 32GB and 64GB models with all of the usual connectivity options, including Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.0, a USB 2.0 port and NFC. It also has a microSD card slot and uHDMI. Pricing for both Windows devices has yet to be announced. The whole package weighs 1.68 pounds and is 9.8mm thick.

Unfortunately, nothing more has been revealed about Windows Phone 8 beyond this actual piece of hardware. Nokia and Microsoft are co-hosting an event in New York on Sept. 5, where the two companies are expected to reveal two Nokia Windows Phone 8 handsets and further elaborate on Windows Phone 8 capabilities.

Toyota pulls Cydia theme and ads to appease Apple

Apple asks Toyota to remove jailbreak Cydia theme
In news that will no doubt shake the very bedrock of your belief system, Apple has asked Toyota to remove its Scion theme and its advertising from ModMyi, a Cydia repository. The Scion theme has been available for weeks, but after it received a ton of press in the last couple of days, Apple finally lashed out.

It's not like we should be surprised, considering Apple has claimed in the past that jailbreaking is illegal -- but at the same time, did the Cupertino cronies hear about the ruling that made circumventing DRM, and thus jailbreaking, legal? Anyway, whether Toyota was supporting illegal, legal, or deliciously gray and ambiguous, activity, it doesn't matter: Apple asked Toyota to remove the theme, and Toyota graciously bent over and capitulated.

This story raises a much more interesting topic, though: this is the first time a multinational company has publicly acknowledged and embraced the jailbreak community. Considering jailbreaking is technically legal, and Cydia's creator, Jay Freeman, estimates that up to 9% of OS devices are jailbroken, it simply makes good, commercial sense to target jailbreakers with ads. Toyota was simply trying to make some money, for shame!

As long as Apple continues to throw around its increasingly-expansive mass, the legality of jailbreaking will continue to be inconsequential. It will be interesting to see if another big company dares embrace the jailbreak community after this, too.

Google bids $900 million for Nortel's patents to protect against litigation trolls

Nortel, once one of the biggest telecoms company in the world but now in the death throes of bankruptcy, has selected Google's $900 million bid for its patent portfolio as the stalking horse bid. This doesn't mean that Google will automatically win Nortel's massive array of telecoms patents, but it does mean that Google is the preferred buyer.

Google, which has a history of lobbying for patent law reform, has been the target of many patent litigation suits. Google's relative infancy means that it has a lot less patents in the vault than big-hitters like Microsoft, Oracle and IBM, and buying Nortel's portfolio of 6,000 patents could provide better protection against patent litigation in the future. It's worth noting that both Apple and RIM have showed interested in the portfolio, too.

Mashable speculates that the patents -- which are nearly all telecoms-related -- will be used to defend against Oracle's attacks on Android's use of Java. We reckon that Google is simply looking to cover its future endeavors in the world of networking. In the absence of patent law reform, and continued threats to net neutrality, owning a bunch of telecoms patents sounds like a very sensible move.

Libra for Android helps you track your weight using The Hacker's Diet system

libra
I'm getting fat; that's what you see on the screenshot to the right -- my gradual move from chubby to portly. But never mind the numbers, look at the pretty graph!

If you've ever read The Hacker's Diet, this graph should be instantly recognizable. Each point shows the weight for a given day, while the trend line lets you see if you're gaining or losing weight.

When I use my "main" PC, I have a homebrew solution for creating and maintaining this graph. But I've had to find a temporary solution for Android, and Libra is it.

It's a beautifully simple app, very true to the spirit of The Hacker's Diet. You can create a shortcut on your homescreen that brings you right into the data entry screen, so you just tap the shortcut every morning, feed in your weight for the day and hit OK, and then you get to see your progress (or lack thereof) on the graph.

The app remembers the previous day's weigh-in, which makes it easy to enter today's weight (as they're usually not too different). The graph is zoomable and scrollable, and most importantly, you can export the data to CSV so you're not locked into the app.

If you ever need to track your weight using an Android device for any period of time, Libra is one excellent solution.
