iGrip Headrest Tablet Kit for iPad review [Giveaway]

What's your favorite road-trip movie? Enter to win an iGrip Headrest Tablet Kit by telling us in the comments below!

The iGrip Headrest Tablet Kit allows you to secure your iPad to the seat of your vehicle to keep your little pests -- i’m mean, your sweet innocent children! -- entertained on those long drives to the grandparents house, whether it's across town, or across country.

Thanks to an adjustable, extensible holder, the iGrip Headrest Tablet Kit easily fits the iPad, and might even be able to scale down to fit smaller tablets depending on their exact dimensions when and if they launch...

iGrip made the Headrest Tablet Kit to be easy to position in virtually any vehicle. It's got a number of hinges and an adjustable grip. However, the iGrip Headrest Tablet Kit is made mainly of plastic and, while it feels sturdy enough, based on my experience with similar plastics, I worry it may be too brittle to withstand the wear and tear of extended use. Especially from children.

Once attached, the iGrip Headrest Tablet Kit works well. Thanks to integrated rubber foam pads, the iGrip Headrest Tablet Kit can lock down snuggly and securely without damaging your iPad, and hold your iPad in place even over the bumps and potholes that plague our roads, especially in colder climates and less competent roadwork departments. If you've tightened all the hinges accordingly, there's not even much sway or vibration.

Because of it's open grip design, all the buttons and ports remain easily accessible on your iPad. Depending on their age and how far back the front seats are, passengers in the back can reach the Home button and touch screen interface to choose what they want to watch, and control volume and playback as well. If you have an AC adapter in the back, the Dock port can be plugged in to keep your iPad charged while you're driving, and the kids are watching. And if you're not a fan of the same shows they like, the 3.5mm headset jack can just as easily be used with headsets. Two or three kids in the back? No problem, just pick up a splitter cable and hook up multiple headsets.

The good

  • Easy to install
  • Easy to position
  • Hold iPad securely

The bad

  • Plastic isn't typically the longest-lasting material

The conclusion

Overall, the iGrip Headrest Tablet Kit is easy to install, easy to use, and does just what you need it to do -- keep backseat passengers entertained while you're on the road. But here's the thing -- I’m not a fan of keeping my kids entertained through zombifying videos. I think the value of being together and enjoying a journey together is far, far more important. Singing, puzzling, talking, and otherwise being together without the typical distractions of our modern, digital lives is something that we enjoy as a family.

However, there are times, especially on long trips, where a little bit of video goes a long way to keeping the kids happy, and giving the drivers and other up front passengers a little peace and quiet on the road.

Line Grapefruit is a tricky Flash "path" game

linegrapefruit
Okay, see that snaking line coming in from the right on the screenshot? That's you. And see those large round circles? Those are supposedly grapefruits, only they won't sit still - they keep moving up and down and cutting across your path. And if you touch one, you die!

That's what you have to deal with in Line Grapefruit. But that's not all - you're also on a time limit. In fact, you have a very limited amount of time to make it through the "path" (for lack of a better word). You need to snake your way through the winding trail without touching anything. The good news is that a grapefruit only kills you if it touches the end of the line - once you've made it past the grapefruit, nothing happens if it crosses the path you've made.

This is not an easy game, but it's quite unique - I can't recall seeing another game quite like it.

Purported HTC Accord Windows Phone schema leaked on Twitter

HTC Accord images purportedly leaked from Windows Phone ROM

While certain other manufacturers claim a lot of the Windows Phone column inches, there are other players in the game. An image that recently popped up on Twitter reminds us that HTC is also a supporter of Microsoft's mobile OS. The picture above claims to be a possible schema for a forthcoming handset, which the poster believes to be the HTC Accord. The account belongs to a prolific XDA-Developer user with a history of Windows Phone ROMS, so it's entirely possible this was found somewhere along the way. Likewise, though, we'll have to take this with the requisite amount of salt. There's not much in the way of specification to be gleaned here, either, but at the least we can get a sense of what the design style might be like going forward. We just need to wait now for the official product launch event to join the ever-growing list.

Jetbus is a retro-tastic physics game, with a bus

jetbus
Once upon a time, there used to be a DOS game with a caveman and a human powered helicopter. The caveman would shuttle around the screen, madly trying to get customers to where they wanted to go.

Jetbus is not that game, but it's obviously inspired by it. You're driving a yellow school bus which has jets. I guess the jet engine takes quite a bit of space inside the bus, because you can only pick up one person at a time.

There are several doors on the screen, each with its own number. As you pick up a person, the status bar at the bottom of the screen shows you which number door you have to take them to.

You must fly your bus carefully, because if it gets bumped around too much, you lose. You earn money on each level, and can visit the garage to buy better jets and damping, power-ups, or even a whole new vehicle.

So while this game isn't made as well as the original that inspired it, it does provide a few minutes of fun. And now, which one of you guys remembers the original and feels like pointing to it in the comments?

Wolfram Alpha lets you stalk yourself on Facebook, reminds you how noisy you are

Wolfram Alpha lets you stalk yourself on Facebook, reminds you how much info you're sharing

You know Facebook's got dirt on you, it's one of modern life's unavoidable trade offs. Now though, thanks to Wolfram Alpha, you can data-mine yourself -- something its creator has been doing for years -- and get a true sense of exactly what the social network knows about you. You'll first have to head over to the computational knowledge engine, then search "Facebook report." Follow the prompts to give the app permission etc, and you'll be rewarded with a detailed breakdown. The data shows information about your interactions, friends, most popular photos, most common demographics and more. For example, you might discover that you know someone in the Philippines, have a clutch of non-connected friends weirdly in the same location, or that you mom is your top post commenter. Though you probably knew that last part already. Paranoid or curious? Jump on the source link to get started.

Add a Windows 8 user tile to your Windows 7 taskbar

Now that Windows 8 images have begun leaking out, it's only a matter of time until developers start releasing mods for Windows 7 which mimic upcoming features. Over at Into Windows, they've spotted one such mod already.

In the earliest Windows 8 images, we saw Windows Live integration on the taskbar. In the far right corner, there's a user tile displayed. If you'd like to do the same on Windows 7, download Taskbar User Tile from DeviantArt user AngelWZR.

Once installed, your current picture will appear on the taskbar. Click it, and a menu appears which allows you to log off, switch users, and access the control panel. Right now, the mod only works if your taskbar is displayed on the bottom of your Windows desktop.
