Marche Grocery List for iPhone review

Marche Grocery List is, well, a grocery list app for the iPhone that features over 1700 common grocery items built right into it. Marche (which is French for "market") keeps track of what you've purchased, the price of each item, and the total price of your list.

Marche Grocery List focuses on grocery lists, but there's nothing keeping you from creating lists for other places you shop. If you want to add an item to your list that isn't included in Marche, you can add it to the database. In addition to different types of shopping lists, many users also use Marche as a way to make lists for competing locations (like two different grocery stores) as a way to compare prices.

The Shopping list view of Marche will show the title of all your lists, the date you last edited it, and the total cost of that list, including tax. If you tap the toolbar at the bottom of the screen, a new screen that displays a chart of the total costs of your lists over the last 7 months will slide up.

When adding an item to your list, March will automatically generate a list of items while you type. Not only does this speed up the process, but it shows choices you may not have thought of at first. For example, you may have been planning to add something basic like chicken to your list, but Marche will show specific choices like chicken breasts, cutlets, legs, livers, thighs, wings, and more. You can of course still choose to go with the more generic term "chicken" if you want. Also, Marche will display all your choices in categories instead of just one big alphabetical list making it easy to find what you're looking for.

After choosing the item you want, you can select from the following quantities: lb, gr, dr, oz, fl, fl oz, pt, qt, gal, item, can, doz, bag, btl, pack and select how many of the selected quantity you want to add to your list. Lastly, you can assign a price to the item either as a per unit price or a total price and select if sales tax should be applied to the item (sales tax value can be edited in settings).

To edit any of the above on a list item, simply hold your finger down on the entry. A quick tap on the entry will cross it out. Tapping the four leaf clover icon (similar to Command key on a Mac keyboard) in the upper right corner will generate a list of other actions you do to your list, the most notable being the ability to create a template.

A template is basically is a list of recipe ingredients. For example, you can create a template for "smoked salmon" that includes salmon, onion, sauce, etc. Then every time you add smoked salmon to you list, all of the required ingredient items will be added to your list instead.

This really is just a brief look at everything that Marche Grocery List has to offer. Some of the other features include a shopping timer, notes for each list, custom actions, customizable wallpapers, csv export, print via AirPrint, and more.

The good

  • Beautiful UI with multiple wallpaper options
  • Add quantity and price to each list item
  • Edit sales tax
  • Create templates
  • Shopping timer
  • Notes
  • Custom actions
  • Supports csv export
  • Print via AirPrint
  • Includes detailed user manual

The bad

  • Requires some time to get used to and learn

The conclusion

Marche Grocery List is a very feature-heavy grocery shopping iPhone app that is perfect for people who are very detailed and organized with their planning. If you prefer simple and fast lists, Marche is not for you, but for the detail-oriented folk, you probably wanna give Marche a look.

Windows 8 now available to OEMs via Microsoft Connect

windows 8Select Microsoft Connect partners -- major players like HP -- have been given their first taste of Windows 8. According to various sources, the build string currently sits at 7971.0.110324-1900, which is the third milestone build of the successor to Windows 7.

So far, there haven't been many details revealed about Windows 8. An actual System Restore -- which is being referred to as History Vault -- has been reported, and the feature will allow users and administrators to completely roll back a system to a previous state. A factory reset option is also said to be included.

We've also seen Windows Live integration taking shape on the desktop. It's believed that you'll be able to log in to Windows 8 using your Windows Live credentials, not just a traditional offline Windows username and password.

All that's left now is for a leaked Windows 8 build to show up on a torrent site. Feel free to tip us if you see that happen.

Popcorn Hour launches A-400 streamer for €289 with 'studio-quality' 3D video processing

DNP Syabas Popcorn hour

If you're a streamer who shuns plastic disks and their ilk, but still wants 3D, there's good news: Syabas has announced the Popcorn Hour A-400 network media player. Thanks to a dual-core video processor, the box can mulch through 3D Blu-ray content (ripped, presumably), while also supporting studio-level features like detail enhancement and debanding. Like its A-300 predecessor, the streamer can dock a hard disk for content storage, and connects to your network via ethernet or optional WiFi. Other connections include an SD card reader, HDMI 1.4, eSATA and USB 2.0 and USB 3.0 (pending confirmation). On top of giving you access to your own content, the Syabas Apps Market brings YouTube, BBC's iPlayer, and 90 or so other free or premium channels. It'll hit stores in October with a €289 price tag, so if that sounds like your bag of popcorn, see the PR for more info.

Tesco recruits Andy McNab's e-book firm Mobcast to help win the Supermarket content war

Tesco recruits Andy McNabs ebook firm Mobcast to help win the Supermarket content war

Hot on the heels of purchasing Blinkbox and Peter Gabriel's WE7, Tesco has purchased Andy McNab's e-book publishers, Mobcast. It seems clear that the British supermarket heavyweight is currently engaged in a phony war with rival Sainsburys, which snapped up Rovi, Global Media Vault and Anobii for its competing online content service. McNab's company is rather small, only offering around 130,000 titles in the UK, but like the earlier purchases, its infrastructure and resources will most likely be cannibalized to boost the company's forthcoming digital platform.

Ultimate Audio From Ultimate Ears

Ever since Logitech acquired custom earphone maker Ultimate Ears, they have expanded the lineup to include many popular models of custom and universal-fit earphones, becoming one of the largest makers of earphones in the world. The expansion continues with their first headphones under the combined Logitech UE label, as well as a new universal-fit multi-armature earphone.

There are 3 new headphones: the Logitech UE 4000, 6000, and 9000. The $99 on-ear 4000 is made for commuting and includes the practically required mic and on-cord control buttons for smartphone use. Also included is an audio splitter for sharing your music. The 4000 is available in three two-color combinations.

The $199.99 over-ear 6000 headphones have a removable cable and laser-tuned drivers that are housed inside dual acoustic chambers for a wide soundstage. They include battery-powered active noise-canceling technology and an on-board amp, plus – unlike some other brands – they will continue to work as regular headphones without battery power. The 6000 phones come in two two-color choices.

The $399.99 flagship 9000 cordless headphones are beautifully designed and include Bluetooth, as well as active noise-canceling technology with an on-board amp. Since they are cordless, the 9000 has mic and control buttons located on the headphones. For safety, there is a “listen through” button to hear what’s going on around you without taking your headphones off.

Up until now, UE have only offered a triple-armature earphone as its flagship; the discontinued TF10. That’s changed with the new $399.99 Logitech UE 900 earphones. Each earpiece sports a quad-armature design—two for the low end, one for the mid-range, and one for high frequencies. This allows each armature to work more efficiently. The clear-blue shell lets you see all the cool tech inside. Two cords are included, one with a mic and on-cord control and one without for just listening. The design of the earphones results in 26 dBs of noise reduction. There are five sizes of silicone cushions and three sizes of Comply foam cushions.

The headphones are available now and the earphones will be available in September.

Tips And Tricks For Your iPad

Apple have designed the iPad to be easy to use, in fact even a two year old can use this device without any problems whatsoever. This makes it a very attractive option for people who are used to using an iPhone or for those who are not. However, there are still a few things about the device that do need a little bit of explaining.

Soft Reset Explained:

Although the iPad is pretty robust in so far as there are not actual moving parts in it, there are still a few things that can go wrong. With this in mind Apple have incorporated a ‘soft reset’ function into the device. This is particularly useful if the system ever freezes. By just holding the top or the power button at the same time as the Home button for a few seconds, allows users to reset the device.

Cut and Copy Pasting Explained:

Copying long texts on an iPad is a long and tiresome process. With this in mind Apple created an easy solution to the problem. Users can copy a whole paragraph without having to stretch the blue knobs on their screens. All they need to do is tap any of the text four times and this automatically highlights the whole paragraph. However, this only works on text that can be edited.

Importing Free eBooks Explained:

Users can benefit from free e-books on their iPads and this includes books that are no longer copyrighted.

Easy Mute Explained:

This is an easy to use function on an iPad that allows you to automatically turn off the volume on your device. Just by pressing the volume down button for a couple of seconds, users can turn off the volume on their devices.

Supersized Screenshots Explained:

Users can increase the size of a screenshot by simply holding the power and home buttons down simultaneously for half a second.

Bringing the Virtual Keyboard Back

Many people thought this would be difficult to achieve on their iPads but in fact it is easily done. All users have to do is touch the eject key on the real physical keyboard to get the virtual one back up.

Anonymous Dumps Trove of 1 Million Stolen Apple IDs

The hacktivist group Anonymous has published 1 million universally unique identifiers belonging to Apple devices. These were among more than 12 million UDIDs stolen from the laptop of FBI Special Agent Christopher K. Stangl, the group said. Anonymous deleted personal data, including the names, mobile phone numbers, addresses and ZIP codes of the devices' users before releasing the data on the Internet. However, the hacker collective left enough information to help users check to see whether their UDIDs were among those the FBI had.

Corel releases VideoStudio Pro X4, we go hands on (video)

videostudioprox4
Corel seems to be on a roll lately; after releasing WinZip System Utilities just last week, this morning the company announced VideoStudio Pro X4.

VideoStudio Pro is aimed at home users and small business professionals who want to create professional-looking videos, but without the hassle, steep learning curve and price of Adobe Premiere Pro and the likes.

This new version introduces several features:

  • Stop motion animation: You can now capture still frames using a webcam, camcorder or DSLR and use them to produce an animation. Tools such as "onion skin view" let you compare the previous image in the sequence with the current one and make the animation as smooth as possible.
  • Processor optimization: Corel says the app is optimized for Intel's new Sandy Bridge systems, and have shown us some graphs with very impressive numbers. We've been unable to test this particular point, but if you have a recent-generation Intel or AMD Fusion system, VideoStudio performance should be blazing. Even on our older test system performance was quite impressive.
  • Customizable workspace: You can drag the video preview window to your secondary monitor (if you have one) and tweak just about any other element in the window layout. Once done, you can save your ideal workspace in one of three slots.
  • Share-to-Web: VideoStudio Pro X4 hooks directly into YouTube, Vimeo, Facebook and Flickr, so you don't even have to launch a browser to upload your final product. Edit, produce and share from within the app itself.
  • Smart Package: Video projects typically consist of many files; Smart Package lets you bundle all video assets for a given project into one ZIP file which you can password-protect and keep in a safe place once you're done editing.
I've had a chance to play around with a pre-release version for a few days, and have put it through its paces editing a short video for my day job. Overall, I've been impressed with how easy it was to create pro-looking results. If you do any sort of video editing but are leery of the investment other apps require (both in dollars and effort), VideoStudio Pro is well worth checking out. To see a bit of the interface itself and what the app can do, watch the video after the jump.

Note: We'll be running a give-away of ten VideoStudio Pro X4 licenses later today, each worth $100 USD. Keep your eyes peeled for the giveaway post!
