Round Up Sheldon and Raj for a Game of Three Man Chess

If you’re a fan of The Big Bang Theory like I am, you may remember when Sheldon was trying to create a 3-person chess game.  I’m betting this one doesn’t have all the whimsical pieces and rules that Sheldon’s game has (popes with jet packs, catapulting gorillas, and beekeepers), but it certainly takes up less room in your living room.  This 3 Man Chess game has three sets of pieces (black, ivory, gray); each player has 16 solid plastic pieces.  Rules are similar to normal chess; the “only changes from conventional chess are some protocol issues that must be followed to maintain order where the teams border each other, which is simple and necessary. The complexities of the third player are infinite. Your threatened piece may be allowed to maintain occupancy as your position is beneficial to the threatening player. But how long can it last? This scenario may exist all over the board. There are multiple trust and doubt situations among all players.”  The game is available at Amazon for $49.95.

Motorola Droid RAZR Maxx HD hands-on: bigger battery, beautiful display, Jelly Bean onboard

Motorola Droid RAZR HD Maxx handson bigger battery, beautiful display, Jelly Bean onboard

Every family has a big brother and in Motorola's case, it's the Droid RAZR Maxx HD. The device, bearing a 4.7-inch 1,280 x 720 Super AMOLED HD display and running Android Jelly Bean (on these demo units, at least), just went official at the company's event today in New York City. And to help with the bombast, HelloMoto! trotted out Google's Eric Schmidt, giving these three Verizon RAZR amigos a hearty welcome. Under the hood, the handset sports a dual-core 1.5GHz S4 CPU, 32GB of storage, an 8-megapixel camera on back and, last but not least, the star of this show: a 3,300mAh battery. We spent some time with this Kevlar-coated phone, so follow along as we deliver our first impressions.

In-app payment support arrives on Android

Right on cue, Google has launched in-app payment support for Android applications. Developer testing began last week, and now many popular apps -- like the ones pictured above -- can begin charging users for add-on functionality, content, or whatever the heck else they feel is worthy of additional bits of your pocket change. If you were wondering, Google will take the same 30% cut that Apple takes from in-app purchases.

At last we can buy individual issues in Comics with minimal fuss!

Anonymous Dumps Trove of 1 Million Stolen Apple IDs

The hacktivist group Anonymous has published 1 million universally unique identifiers belonging to Apple devices. These were among more than 12 million UDIDs stolen from the laptop of FBI Special Agent Christopher K. Stangl, the group said. Anonymous deleted personal data, including the names, mobile phone numbers, addresses and ZIP codes of the devices' users before releasing the data on the Internet. However, the hacker collective left enough information to help users check to see whether their UDIDs were among those the FBI had.

Nokia Lumia screens tout Synaptics tech for gloves-on use, 920 adds outdoor-friendly brightness

Nokia Lumia screens tout Synaptics tech for gloveson use, 920 adds outdoorfriendly brightness

Everyone who regularly deals with cold winters knows the pain of using a smartphone in January -- you're usually forced to take your gloves off and risk frostbite if that call just can't wait. Nokia's new Lumia 820 and Lumia 920 phones bring in a Synaptics ClearPad Series 3 sensor whose responsiveness will keep those hands toasty. Super Sensitive Touch, as Nokia calls it, lets the capacitive surface react to more than just direct skin contact: it can recognize input through gloves, as well as from those with long fingernails. You'll want to spring for the Lumia 920 if you envision updating Twitter during a sunny skiing trip, however. On top of that extra-large 1,280 x 768 resolution, the 920's PureMotion HD+ display is reportedly about 25 percent brighter than its next-best rival. We're looking forward to a real field test -- not to mention preserving all the feeling in our fingers.

OmmWriter brings its clean, calm writing interface to Windows

ommwriter
I have a thing for full-screen text editing. I use WriteMonkey for my creative writing needs, and VIM in a full-screen PuTTY session for my Web development work. That being the case, I'm all over the monospace, dark-background, focused editing scene.

OmmWriter attempts to take that aesthetic and make it somehow more spiritual, with three picturesque backgrounds and ambient background audio tracks (there are seven of each in the paid version).

I'm of two minds about this app. On the one hand, yes, it's beautiful. But if you want music as a background to your writing, why not pick your own soundtrack with Winamp or Foobar2000 running in the background?

OmmWriter also offers three keyboard-clicking sounds, which are kind of nice. None of these features are groundbreaking, really. OmmWriter could be seen as a way to gently ease into the world of distraction-free writing -- in case something like WriteMonkey's dark background is just too oppressive for you.

After the fold you can see a video showcasing several of OmmWriter's features and creative soundscapes.

This Swiss Army Flashlight Is Your Dealzmodo-Exclusive Deal of the Day [Video]

Modern electronics go bad. They may not rot like vegetables, but a look at the Dealz from two years ago proves that some gadgets certainly have a shelf life. But there's some technology that never goes obsolete. A great example of that is the eponymous tools for the Swiss army. The standard Swiss Army knife was so popular that it has become a worldwide phenomenon. And like the knife, the Swiss army flashlight is a classic. More »

Classic Shell now makes Internet Explorer 9 look like IE8

classic shell make windows 7 look like xp
If you used Windows XP for a long time (who didn't?), one of the biggest changes when moving to Windows 7 or Vista was the massively-altered Explorer. While the new Explorer introduces some useful new features, it also removed just as many -- which is where Classic Shell comes in!

We've covered Classic Shell before, but here's the crib note: Classic Shell restores almost every Windows XP-era Explorer feature. The best change, in our opinion, is the reemergence of the 'up' arrow, meaning you now navigate without using the Windows Vista/7 'breadcrumbs' address bar. The status bar yet again shows the total size of your selection, and -- praise be! -- the diabolical Windows 7 Copy File 'copy and replace?' dialog has been replaced with a Windows XP lookalike (image after the break).

New to the most recent version of Classic Shell is the ability to make IE9 look like IE8. With Classic Shell the title bar yet again has a caption, so you can see the full title of Web pages. The current security zone and loading progress indicator have been put back into the status bar, too. If you enable 'Show tabs on a separate row,' it's almost like using IE8.

Finally, Classic Shell replaces the omnipotent Windows 7 Start Menu with the age-old 'classic' Windows 2000/XP-style Start Menu. Classic Shell makes the Start Menu skinable, too, if you're into the kind of thing.

As awesome as it sounds, we've only touched on a small section of Classic Shell's feature set. Check the Classic Shell site for a complete list. There's a few more images of Classic Shell in action after the break.
