Apple television plans still bogged down in media negotiations

Apple television plans still bogged down in media negotiations

For those waiting on a full-on Apple television set, or even an enhanced Apple TV will more traditional capabilities, it looks like you'll have to keep waiting, at least for now. While Apple is likely ready to go from a technology standpoint, they can't seem to come to agreements with entrenched, terrified media companies over the future of the living room interface and experience. Adam Satariano and Alex Sherman report for Bloomberg:

In recent negotiations, the main stumbling blocks with cable companies have included a tussle for control over the software that determines the screen interface -- the look and feel of the viewer’s experience, said people familiar with the discussions.

Bloomberg also succinctly sums up what Apple's plans are for the living room:

Since the middle of the last decade, Apple’s engineers have been working on a more advanced product to allow viewers to quickly find shows and movies, blending both live and recorded material, the people said. It would recommend content based on interests and work seamlessly with Apple’s family of other devices. An iPhone or iPad would double as a remote control, the people said.

According to Bloomberg, Apple most recently focused on deals to gain access to live programming from cable companies, without having to make completely new content deals. Apparently, however, the cable companies are worried that Apple will intermediate their customer relationships and don't find the prospect of more future-thinking business models appealing enough to risk the old, decaying ones.

And that's the downer in all this -- even if Apple's negotiations pan out, the best we'll get with this type of deal is an Apple TiVo, and not the product Apple really wants to make. Short of using some of that $100 billion in the bank to buy cable companies -- and they could never buy enough, globally enough -- and drag them kicking and screaming into a new and better world, we're all going to be held hostage to the fears, contracts, and comfort of the past.

Beware of fake invites to Apple's iPhone 5 event next week

Beware of fake invites to Apple's iPhone 5 event next week

Whether you're a blogger or a tech addict, you're probably impatiently waiting to see what Apple reveals at the iPhone 5 event this coming week. Scammers and fraudsters love to take advantage of the excitement that surrounds events such as these. If the "invite" that appeared in my inbox this morning is any indication, that's exactly what they'll be doing.

Apple sends out invites to their events via e-mail but it's important to pay attention to where they're coming from as well as what links you're clicking in them. If you got an invite to an Apple event or any other kind of suspicious e-mail, be wary. As the screenshot above shows, the e-mail I received came not to my iMore e-mail, but to a general public inbox for my business. That's the first indication. The second was that it was coming from a domain other than just apple.com. Hovering over the link also showed the link to route to a strange tracking website.

In short, if you've received something like this recently and you think it's too good to be true, it probably is. Use common sense and don't click any links from anything that looks sketchy. Always verify the domain an e-mail is coming from and its authenticity. The time of year for Apple related scams is upon us, so be on your guard when it comes to opening e-mails that appear to come from Apple. Odds are, they aren't.

Ceton Companion apps for iOS and Android are available, bring WMC mobile control for $5

For Windows Media Center fans searching for a good looking remote app for their mobile devices, that wait is over, at least on a few platforms. The Ceton Companion app we've been teased with since CES 2012 is finally officially available, and ready for download from the Android and iOS app stores. We're told the Windows Phone 7 version should be along shortly, as well as the Amazon Appstore edition once its approval goes through. If you've somehow avoided its specifics until now, we have walkthrough videos embedded after the break to show what kind of remote DVR scheduling, guide browsing and remote control action it's capable of. To cover the possibility that a whole Lincoln is too rich for your blood, one way to defray the costs and pay for the app on two platforms is to follow the Ceton Twitter account and enter a contest for a $10 Google Play gift card -- instructions are available at the link below.

STMicroelectronics details pressure sensor in your Galaxy S III, can tell when you're mountaineering

If you're the sort to tear down your Galaxy S III, you might have noticed a mysterious STMicroelectronics LSP331AP chip lurking on the motherboard. While we've known that it's a pressure sensor, we now know that it's a new generation -- new enough that ST is just getting to explaining the technology to a mainstream audience. The piezoresistor-equipped MEMS chip tracks altitude through atmospheric pressure with an uncanny knack for precision; it can tell when you've crossing between floors, which could be more than handy for future iterations of indoor navigation. Don't worry if you're an extreme sports junkie that might push the limits, either. The sensor can do its job at the kinds of pressure you'd normally see when 32,800 feet high or 5,900 feet below sea level, which should keep it working even if you're checking your phone during a climb up K2 or a HALO skydive. We don't know if anyone beyond Samsung is lined up to use ST's pressure sensor in their devices, but we wouldn't be surprised if it becomes a mainstay for smartphones and outdoor gear in the near future.

Adobe Premiere Pro CS6 now fully supports Retina MacBook Pro: both HiDPI and GPU compute

Adobe Premiere Pro CS6 finally supports Retina MacBook Pro: both HiDPI and GPU compute are enabledAdobe's video editing application is already a lovely thing on the Retina MacBook Pro, but not visually -- only in terms of its raw performance on that Core i7 CPU. Until today's update -- 6.0.2 -- the software hasn't actually been able to make use of HiDPI itself, and neither has it been able to exploit the performance-boosting potential of GPU compute on the laptop's NVIDIA GTX 650M graphics card. If you're lucky enough to own this combo of hardware and software, Adobe's official blog suggests that you go ahead and check for the update or apply it manually following the instructions at the source link below (it's actually within Bridge that you should check for the update, with other Adobe titles closed). We're hopefully about to apply it ourselves and will report back on its impact.

Sprint sending Jelly Bean to Samsung Galaxy Nexus and Nexus S 4G tomorrow

We haven't heard much from the Now Network about upgrading its handsets with some Jelly Bean goodness, but see that picture up there? That leaked screenshot says that Galaxy Nexus and Nexus S 4G owners on Sprint will be getting Android 4.1 on September 6th, which is tomorrow. So celebrate, Sprint customers -- if accurate, that means that your Nexi will be the first stateside CDMA phones enjoying Mountain View's latest buttery smooth mobile OS. Let's just hope Big Red follows suit with a final release for its Nexus owners sometime soon.

Motorola Droid RAZR HD Maxx handson bigger battery, beautiful display, Jelly Bean onboard

Every family has a big brother and in Motorola's case, it's the Droid RAZR Maxx HD. The device, bearing a 4.7-inch 1,280 x 720 Super AMOLED HD display and running Android Jelly Bean (on these demo units, at least), just went official at the company's event today in New York City. And to help with the bombast, HelloMoto! trotted out Google's Eric Schmidt, giving these three Verizon RAZR amigos a hearty welcome. Under the hood, the handset sports a dual-core 1.5GHz S4 CPU, 32GB of storage, an 8-megapixel camera on back and, last but not least, the star of this show: a 3,300mAh battery. We spent some time with this Kevlar-coated phone, so follow along as we deliver our first impressions.
