Yahoo! Messenger now censors the links you share

Yahoo Messenger Big Brother censorshipWe've all thought it, but never dared think it could be true: what if Microsoft, Yahoo, and AOL actively monitor our instant messenger chats? What if mentions of 'bomb' and 'underage' are tracked and sent to law enforcement agencies? What if chat providers don't agree with the things we say, or the links we share, and filter or censor the content of our transmitted messages?

Well, it looks like our fears may actually have some basis in reality: Yahoo Messenger strips FilesTube links from instant messages. It doesn't tell either party that a URL has been removed from chat -- it just deletes it. Poof. FilesTube, in case you were wondering, is one of the largest file hosting meta search engines on the Web -- it indexes RapidShare, Megaupload, Mediafire, and many other 'cyberlocker' services.

It's fairly obvious why FilesTube links are being removed -- the Censor General at Yahoo is probably one of those perplexed primates who think all uses of BitTorrent are illegal -- but this situation poses a far more important question: is Yahoo censoring messages on the client side, or the server side. Does the messenger client itself maintain a list of 'blacklisted' words -- and if so, why are we not told that FilesTube links are banned? What other words and terms does Yahoo protect us from?

Internet Explorer 9 nears 4% share on Windows 7, IE6 extinction countdown picks up steam

internet explorer 9 ie9
Microsoft has shared some news about the state of its most and least loved Web browsers -- Internet Explorer 9 and 6, respectively. Even with IE9 only recently exiting beta, Microsoft reports that 3.6% of Windows 7 users are now running the new browser (no mention of Vista... what's with that?). The post also reveals that the adoption rate is almost five times what IE8 garnered in the early going.

It's also interesting to note that there are now more than 1,000 sites utilizing Internet Explorer 9's Windows 7 integration features -- like the new desktop notification support we showed you in Hotmail.

But perhaps the best news of all is that Microsoft's IE6countdown.com now has more than 400 partners and is generating nearly two million pageviews per month, helping to lure users away from the woefully out-of-date browser. Can the end come soon enough, DS readers?

German court rules that Motorola, Samsung don't violate Apple touch event patent

Galaxy S III and iPhone 4S

Motorola and Samsung just caught a break from the law after a few hard knocks. A Mannheim, Germany court has ruled that neither company infringes on an Apple patent covering how an OS responds to and ignores touch events. While we don't yet know the full details, patent lawsuit guru Florian Mueller suggests that the German judge took the same point of view that thwarted Apple's claims in the Netherlands and the UK: the particular patent was just too broad to stick. It's a potentially important win, as a ruling of violation could have led to serious problems with keeping Android-based Motorola and Samsung devices in stores; other patents are more easily circumvented. However, it's still something of a Pyrrhic victory for a pair of companies that have lately been facing the threat of near-term bans and steep damages.

Pastebin updated to V3, releases Windows app

pastebin
Pastebin is a very popular website aimed at coders and other nerdy types, which allows them (or should I say, us) to paste and share snippets of code with lovely syntax highlighting.

It has recently undergone a major overhaul which includes the release of a brand new Windows client. The new client lets you create new "pastes" and manage your existing ones. It joins a host of other tools from Pastebin, such as the Google and Chrome extensions, OS X widget and the mobile apps.

If you're currently using Pastebin, the new client is a great addition. And if you haven't tried it before, next time you have a piece of code you want to share or get some feedback on, you could do worse than try out Pastebin.

[Thanks, Jeroen!]

Neurowear wants to read your mind, geotag your feelings (video)

Neurowear wants to read your mind, geotag your feelings video

Geotagging your photos? Old hat -- Neurowear wants to geotag your mood. The folks that brought animated cat ears to the human race is now using NeuroSky's brainwave-reading headgear to suss out your emotional state and share it with your friends. We dropped in on the group at Tokyo Game Show to take a look at an early prototype. After strapping a familiar Mindwave mobile headset to this editor's skull, a companion iPhone app sprung to life, reading off relaxation levels and assigning cartoon faces to the user's mood. The reading could then be recorded on a map, tagging how the user felt at a given location and time and allowing them to share that information with their friends. Had a great time at a new coffee shop? Now you can prove it, and encourage your social contacts to join you. It's an interesting idea, but its still a long way from hitting the app store -- the demo we were given was only a concept app, and the geotagging portion of the demonstration was simulated. It may be awhile before you can tweet your feelings directly. Need another way to express yourself? Don't worry -- Nerosky is adding a brainwave controlled tail, dubbed Shippo, to its line of cranium controlled animal parts. Check it out (as well as our quick neurotagging demo) after the break.

Color vulnerable to simple GPS hack, lets you spy on anyone, anywhere

Color, the $41-million-in-funding location-oriented photo sharing startup, is susceptible to simple GPS spoofing. With nothing more than a jailbroken iPad or iPhone, you can use FakeLocation to trick Color into thinking you're somewhere else. Within seconds you can be browsing photos that were snapped thousands of miles away. With a little digging, you can pore through photos not intended for your eyes.

Of course, such a hack isn't illegal as such -- every photo you take with Color is public. With FakeLocation you are simply circumventing Color's very limited location-oriented security mechanism. It does undermine Color's usefulness (and uniqueness), though -- if nefarious types can sit in their bedroom or basement and eavesdrop on classy dinner parties and wild night club soirees, people might be less inclined to share personal photos with those around them.

Fortunately, both for Color and its users, this is an easy security hole to plug -- at least in the short term. The app (or server-side) code simply checks to see if the user has 'teleported' an impossibly large distance, without any intermediate steps in between. In the long term, though, Color's users must be aware that its social graph is completely public. Color's users must realize that every photo they upload is visible by anyone, from any place.

After the break, just to elucidate a little on Color's actual business model and ultimate intention, we have two amazing quotes from Bill Nguyen, Color's founder.

Nokia Lumia 510 put under the regulatory limelight, hints low-cost Windows Phone 7.8 on the way

Nokia Lumia 510 put under the regulatory limelight, hints lowcost Windows Phone 78 for all

Here's a contradiction in action: a Nokia phone that goes down a model number, but up in features. That's what we'll see if regulatory screenings and leaks surrounding the unreleased Lumia 510 are any indication. China's TENAA, the FCC and Indonesia's DG PosTel have all taken a look at the device ahead of time and point to a short, squat design that won't have the budget chic of the Lumia 610. However, if Baidu tips are correct, the 510 may be an ever-so-slight upgrade to its higher-digit predecessor with a larger 4-inch screen and a likely fast track to Windows Phone 7.8. Just don't anticipate more than the existing 800MHz Snapdragon, 256MB of RAM and 5-megapixel camera -- or a US release, for that matter. The FCC has only tested the Lumia 510 against American GSM bands, which hints that its 3G support is meant for China, Indonesia and other countries where low-cost smartphones matter most.

The best games to show off your new iPhone 5

While a lot of folks were worried that game developers would be gritting their teeth over having to adapt to the iPhone 5's new aspect ratio, many have already updated their apps and will have them ready the second you get your mitts on your shiny new iOS 6 device. We've farmed up some of the best ones right here.

Wild Blood

Wild Blood is Gameloft's first Unreal-powered title, and boy is it a beaut. This action-RPG puts you in the greaves of Sir Lancelot of Arthurian legend, and you're trying to hack your way through hordes of demons to rescue Guinevere.  Wild Blood will make sure you keep slinging arrows, swinging swords, and hurling fireballs no matter where you are, and thanks to the 4-inch display on the iPhone 5, you'll be able to easily defend against flankers.

Lili

If you're looking for something a little less violent, Lili is a promising and unique adventure game that puts players in a whimsical world full of spirits and wobbly wooden robots. There's some twitch-based gameplay as you try to gather flowers off the backs of evasive spirits, and more RPG-style elements with a wide variety of NPC interaction and world exploration. The graphics are fantastic, and will look just as good on your iPad 3 as your shiny new iPhone 5.

Jetpack Joyride

Jetpack Joyride is a classic endless runner that takes Barry Steakfries on a rampage through the top secret lab where he works (or, presumably, used to work). The simple one-button controls put the gas on Barry's jetpack, though along the way he'll find all sorts of different experimental vehicles to further his mayhem. Throughout gameplay, you'll pick up and earn coins, which can be spent on a wide variety of gadgets that significantly alter your gameplay. Thanks to the extra screen real estate on the iPhone 5, now you'll have just a little bit extra heads-up as those homing missles close in on you. If the iPhone 5 is your first iOS smartphone, be sure to pick this one up.

Blood & Glory 2: Legend

Glu Mobile's free-to-play gladitorial combat game has been optimized for the iPhone 5. Though it might be a little derivative of Infinity Blade, the graphics are still fantastic, and there's plenty of customizability with a wide array of weapons, armor, and equipment.  The one-on-one combat is full of tactical precision, and if you're willing to toss in a few bucks through in-app purchases, you can speed up your advancement.

Tiny Tower

Tiny Tower is an adorable 8-bit-style business management simulator, where you have to attract new residents to your tower, employ them, create businesses to meet local needs, and keep those stores stocked with whatever it is they offer. Over time, you collect profits from these businesses, and spend the money to tack on new floors to the top of your tower. There's premium currency available through in-app purchases if you want to speed things up, though you earn those TowerBux through regular gameplay. More casual gamers will definitely enjoy this one.

SpellTower

If you're looking for something a little low-key, SpellTower is a hugely popular word game that is fully optimized for the iPhone 5. It's probably best described as crossword meets Tetris, with a sharp, minimalistic style. If you've ever played Bookworm, you'll probably be familiar with the idea of tracing through letter tiles in the right order to produce words and eliminate them from the board. There are a variety of game modes, including Bluetooth multiplayer, but no matter which mode you play, you'll have a slightly taller tower to chew through.

Asphalt 7: Heat

Asphalt 7 has been updated and optimized for the new iPhone, and keeps its white-knuckled racing action and razor-sharp graphics. Players work their way through a wide variety of tournaments, or can opt for online competition for the odd one-off match. Now, Real Racing 3 was showcased during the iPhone 5 announcement, and it should be available soon, but in the meantime, Asphalt 7 will do a great job of handling your racing fix.

Minecraft: Pocket Edition

Minecraft isn't so much a game as it is a blocky playground. Yeah, there are a few monsters that come out at night, but most of your time is spent gathering blocks of material in a wide open world, and combining them to create all sorts of stuff. You can play online with friends and share your creations, or go at it alone to create your masterpiece. The game is being updated all of the time, with plenty of new items, each with their own behaviors and creation recipies.  Minecraft is a huge cultural phenomenon, and if you're the creative type, you'll easily get sucked into this 8-bit-ish world.

MetalStorm: Wingman

This free-to-play flight simulator by Z2 Live that has a ton of excellent dogfighting action. Players can work their way through the single-player campaign, gradually improving their plane and decking it out with all sorts of weapon systems, or they can go head-to-head in competitive online play. Those that are a bit friendlier may want to give the co-op mode a shot.

Temple Run

Temple Run is the classic endless racer where players must race through an ancient ruin and evade angry spirits while making off with their prized artiefact. With lightning fast swipe gestures, you've got to make it as far as you can, rounding sharp turns, leaping across chasms, and sliding beneath traps. Every time you play, you earn coins which can be spent on various upgrades and power-ups that you encounter throughout your race. If this is your first iPhone, Temple Run should definitely be one of your first downloads.

There are bound to be plenty more games that get optimized for the iPhone 5's new display. Which are your favorite that have been recently updated?

First Firefox 6 build next week, Firefox 7 by May, and aurora channel introduced

Firefox 5, 6, 7 and release channels
Mozilla's Engineering Project Manager, Christian Legnitto, has detailed the release schedule for Firefox 5, 6 and 7. If all goes to plan, Firefox 6.0a1 will be released next week, April 12, and Firefox 7.0a1 in the middle of May. The final build of Firefox 5 should be released on June 21, exactly three months after the release of Firefox 4.

Along with the faster 6-week release cadence, Firefox's new Chrome-like release channels have also been given names and anticipated update frequencies. The most notable change is the introduction of a new alpha channel -- which is analogous to Chrome Canary -- that will be called 'aurora' and will update nightly. Aurora will be where fixes and features are tested, and either approved for Beta, or backed out to Central. Aurora will have a new icon, too.

The Nightly (mozilla-central) channel will remain unchanged in name and frequency, but it will gain a new 'nightly icon.' The Beta (mozilla-beta) channel will remain as-is, with new builds rolling out weekly. The Release (mozilla-release) channel will also remain as-is, with security and stability updates coming every 6 to 12 weeks.

It should be noted that the names (including 'aurora') are not necessarily final, but it's unlikely that they'll change. We're also awaiting the arrival of the new 'channel switching' technology, which should arrive in the next few days -- in time for the release of Firefox 6 aurora!
