Audiobooks.com launches new subscription plans starting at $14.95 a month

Audiobooks.com

Audiobooks.com is today launching two new, affordable subscription plans for their customers to stream and download audiobooks from the service. The cheapest option starts at $14.95 a month, and for that you get to choose one of over 25,000 titles to listen to on your Android device as well as your computer. For $22.95 a month that gets upped to two audiobooks every month to listen to. Audiobooks says that their customers listen to one or two books per month on average, and so these new subscription plans offer them the most value for money. Both are less than the $25 a month plan previously offered for all-you-can-eat audiobooks, but do offer a little more flexibility.

Before committing any of your money though, Audiobooks.com offers a free 7-day trial of the service, giving potential new customers the chance to test drive the service before signing up. Grab a copy of the Android app from the Play Store link above, and you can catch the full press release after the break.

hyper-vbackupbeta
This one's for the sysadmins in the audience: Altaro, makers of our favorite "time machine for Windows" back solution, OopsBackup, have just announced a new product entering beta called Hyper-V Backup.

It's a backup solution for virtual machines running on Microsoft's Hyper-V virtualization solution. If that sentence just seemed like a bunch of buzzwords crammed together, Hyper-V backup is not for you. But, if you actually use Hyper-V and are hankering for a good backup solution, Altaro might be worth checking out.

The beta run is limited - Altaro are looking for just 250 testers. All participants will get a free license key to the final, production version. So if you're interested in helping test Hyper-V Backup, get yourself over to Altaro now and join the beta.

Turn your TV into a smart TV with Archos TV connect

arachos-tv-connectWith the newly announced TV connect from Archos, you can turn your existing HDTV into a smart TV.  The TV connect runs Android 4.1 (“Jelly Bean”), and has access to all the apps in the Google Play store.  When you turn your TV into a smart TV with the TV connect, you’ll be able to surf, send/receive emails, and stream online video.  After you map the buttons on the included TV controller, you’ll be able to play any of the thousands of Android games available.  The controller also serves as a multi-touch controller for your TV, allowing you to control your TV with touches, taps, and swipes – just as you would control an Android tablet.  Using Android apps, you can make and receive HD video calls (using the built-in camera and microphone) or access  books, music, magazines and movies.  You can even stream your own media content over your home network either through WiFi or Ethernet.

The TV connect has a 1.5 GHz Smart Multi Core processor, 1GB of RAM, and 8GB of storage, which can be expanded via the microSD slot.  It’s compatible with Microsoft Windows 7, 8, Vista, XP, or higher and with Windows Media Player 11.  It will be available staring in February 2013 for $129.99.

Words With Friends for Android updated, promises "smoother game experience"

wordswithfriends
As several of you noted in the comments to our post asking for cross-platform iOS/Android games, Words With Friends for Android does not provide the smoothest gaming experience... and that's being rather charitable.

You might be happy to hear that a couple of days ago Zynga released an update which promises to solve many of the Android-specific issues, such as notifications not popping up.

Sadly, installing the update is not a smooth experience; you have to manually uninstall the previous version, and then go to the Android Market and install it. What's nice is that it doesn't lose your saved games - this screenshot shows a game I've started before the update and continued after updating.

How's the new update working out for you? Let us know in the comments!

Tablet bag for women from Vera Bradley

vera-bradley-tablet-hipster

Over the past couple of years, Vera Bradley has been expanding their Tech line of bags and accessories for gadgets.  They’ve just introduced the Tablet Hipster, a variation of their popular Hipster bag.  The Tablet Hipster has a dedicated pocket in front to hold a tablet, and a center zipper compartment to hold your normal “purse” stuff or other gadgets, chargers, and cables.  The Tablet Hipster is $65 and is available in the current VB fabrics.  It’s perfect for the woman who’s a Vera Bradley fan and needs a gear bag that doesn’t look like a typical gear bag.

TweetDeck to launch as HTML5 Web app, now accepting beta testers

When TweetDeck landed in the Chrome Web Store, it seemed like an indication that it might eventually evolve into a pure HTML5 Web app. Now it looks as though that's exactly what's going to happen, with TweetDeck announcing that a new, not-just-for-Chrome Web client is ready for beta testing.

It's a natural progression for TweetDeck, especially since its originally Adobe Air app is practically all Web code. TweetDeck Web will sport a feature set which is nearly identical to the Chrome app, with the notable exception of Twitter streaming.

Initially, TweetDeck is targeting Firefox 4 and 3.6, Google Chrome, and Safari. Opera and Internet Explorer 9 won't be invited to the dance until a bit later on.

If you'd like to get in on the TweetDeck Web beta, head on over and register -- or sign up using your existing TweetDeck account.

Cadillac ELR unveiled: A Volt for the luxury set

Cadillac ELR unveiled A Volt for the luxury set

It's taken a good, long while for the Cadillac Converj concept to break cover as a production machine, but at the 2013 North American International Auto Show in Detroit, the car has finally shrugged off its camouflage. You can think of this as the Chevy Volt's more better-mannered big-brother if you like, as this machine relies on the same Extended Range Electric Vehicle platform as its predecessor. That is, it has the same basic hybrid structure as the Volt that allows it to run as a pure EV for up to 35 miles before switching over to a more traditional parallel hybrid mode, burning gasoline for a maximum range of over 300 miles. But, that's not to say this is a Volt that's just made a trip to the tailor for a better-fitting suit -- there's a bit more to it than that. Join us after the break for the details.

How Secure is My Password lets you know just that

howsecureismypassword
We've all heard it before; you need to select a lengthy password, one that's hard to guess. Not a dictionary word. And it has to have some capital letters in it too, and some digits, and a symbol or two won't hurt either.

That's a handy set of rules to keep in mind, but How Secure is My Password helps us understand why they're important.

It's basically like a full-screen version of one of those password-strength meters websites sometimes use. But instead of showing you a bar going from "weak" to "strong", it shows you an estimation of how long your password would take to crack. That's a much more visceral way to understand why your password is strong.

For example, when I entered "rabbit", it came back with "your password is one of the 500 most common passwords. It could be cracked almost instantly". "rabbit5" would take two hours, "$rabbit5" would take 38 days, and "$rabbitZ5" would take 237 years. It's quite enlightening to see what a difference three simple characters can make.
