How's your battery life on iOS 6 and iPhone 5?

Whether you bought a brand new iPhone 5 or you upgraded an existing device to iOS 6, one of the first concerns everyone has is battery life. Is it better? Is it worse? Is it the same? A new device or new version of iOS typically does more than the last one, and because it's new, we typically use it more, at least in the beginning. Problems with backups, with push, with location services, with apps that don't shut down properly all also seem more common as everyone, from Apple to developers, gets used to the new hardware and software.

I already published my traditional list of battery life trouble shooting tips, so if you're having problems check those out and see if they help.

Then let me know -- how is your battery life on your new iPhone 5, or your newly updated iOS 6 device? Vote up top and give me the details in the comments below!

Swapping Bits On This Semi-Auto Screwdriver Is Like Reloading a Hand Gun [Tools]

You'll never be lacking the necessary bit with Worx's new semi-automatic electric screwdriver that uses reloadable cartridges and a slide-action mechanism to switch tips. The Navy Wants to Use Seawater For Fuel [Navy]

Driving around in unfamiliar territory, searching for a gas station while your gauge hovers just above E is maddening and stressful. But imagine experiencing that same feeling while manning a giant aircraft carrier through foreign—and sometimes hostile—seas. To make fuel easier to come by, the Navy is working on a way to produce it from ocean water. More »

Windows 8 Explorer to feature Ribbon UI, SkyDrive and Mesh integration?

windows 8 explorer ribbon
Rafael Rivera and Paul Thurrott have posted a second look at some of the early changes which have surface in Windows 8 milestone 3. First there was the restyled Welcome Screen, and now it appears that Microsoft is toying with bringing the Ribbon UI to Explorer.

The Ribbon, like in Microsoft Word and Excel, is context-aware, adding tabs for specific tasks which apply to the folder you're viewing -- such as library or picture management. You can also make out two new buttons in the status bar, which allow you to change the current folder's view style.

It's clear from all the placeholder images and repeated elements that this is very much a work in progress, but featuring the Ribbon more prominently in Windows 8 would certainly be a logical progression for Microsoft. It's slowly become more ubiquitous, moving beyond Office and into Wordpad, Paint, and several of the Windows Live Essentials applications.

There's more to the screenshots than the Ribbon UI, however. Our friend Long Zheng has noted two interesting elements in the images: Web sharing and sync (image after the break). That would likely mean users will be able to quickly upload files to SkyDrive and synchronize using Live Mesh right from Explorer in Windows 8. That's not a total surprise considering many of the earliest leaked images of Windows 8 showed Windows Live integration on the desktop.

Mozilla Persona signins launch in beta, skip the social networking ball and chain

We all know those web pages where the only alternative to a site-specific login is a social networking account. That's not very reassuring for anyone skittish about linking their commentary to a Facebook account relatives might see, if they're even willing to join a social network in the first place. Mozilla has been aware of that hesitation long enough to have just released its long-in-development Persona sign-in service as a beta. Although it has the same kind of simple approach to a login as a Facebook or Twitter pop-up window, Persona's emphasis is on privacy: it stops paying attention the moment credentials go through, keeping any diatribes or subscription details from landing in social streams or central databases. Users don't have to play a rousing game of guess-the-username, either, as they just need to sign in with one or more familiar e-mail addresses and a single password. Persona faces an uphill battle in getting web developer adoption when the establishment sign-in services are open to hundreds of millions of internet citizens, but it does have The Times' online crossword section, OpenPhoto and Voost as early poster children -- and anything that lets the privacy-minded join the party has our vote.

Bad Piggies review

Bad Piggies launched on Android and iOS today, mashing together the physics-based, build-it-yourself gameplay of Amazing Alex with the highly recognizable green pigs from Rovio’s first smash hit, Angry Birds. Angry Birds is a hard act to follow even by its own creator. Can this pig fly and do Rovio’s heritage justice, or are we just seeing a lot of lipstick?

This Universal Macro Lens Is Your Dealzmodo-Exclusive Deal of the Day [Dealzmodo]

We, as cameraphone-toting humans, love to take photos. 10% of all photos ever taken have been taken in the past year. Every two seconds we take as many photos as all humanity did in the 1800s, mostly powered by the 2.5 billion camera phones currently in people's pockets. That's awesome! But it also means that billions of photos are taken with identical tiny lenses, because most people aren't attaching a bulky case to add a lens mount. And smartphone stock lenses aren't great for macro photography. More »

Poop Snow on an Ancient Burial Ground: This Can't End Well [Wtf]

If Poltergeist taught us anything, it's that you shouldn't build a house on a Native American burial ground. Obviously the owners of Flagstaff's Arizona Snowbowl Ski Resort have never seen that movie because they're literally about to shit all over one, by expanding onto 74 acres of sacred land in the San Francisco Peaks and manufacturing 100 percent of its snow from sewage. Let it Slide is an engaging, difficult puzzle game

letitslide
I have a thing for physics games, and I've been known to post the occasional platformer or action game here and there. But Let it Slide is one of the brainiest games I've posted to date.

The idea is very simple, and far from original: You get a board with pieces arranged in a particular pattern; you have to slide those around until you get the special piece into its target location.

It's not even about finding out where the target location is - you can just hover over "dim tiles" and instantly see where you're supposed to bring the special piece. But getting it there is a whole different story.

There are five tutorial levels, which I strongly recommend you do. Then there are twenty "beginner" levels, but that's really a misnomer. If those are the beginner levels, I don't want to know what the intermediate and advanced levels look like!

Every time you finish a level you get a score based on how many clicks it took you - each level has a "par" (the minimum number of clicks it could be completed in), and your performance is compared to that gold standard. Because it's such a brainy game, getting it right is quite satisfying. I was downright proud of myself when I managed to finish a few levels. All in all, quite recommended, especially if you've got a few minutes of quiet. It might actually help you focus better later on.
