FTC Wades Deeper Into Online Child Privacy Thicket

The Federal Trade Commission is working on an update of the rules governing the online collection of personal information, which have remained pretty much the same since 1998. The changes to the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act, however, are likely to do as much to invade children's privacy as to protect it. The proposed changes have been debated since 2009. The ongoing debate led the FTC in August to extend the deadline for comments to Sept. 24. That drew a fresh spate of comments from advocates earlier this week.

This Charger Is Made for Walking

Shake your electricity maker. Photo: Tremont Electric

Finally some good will come out of all that walking, biking and hiking you’ve been guilted into. All that movement can charge your phone.

More than two years after the nPower PEG arrived on the scene with promises of kinetic charging for our devices, it’s finally available for purchase.

The nPower PEG (personal energy generator) contains a weight, springs, an inductive coil and a battery. As you move, the weight moves up and down and generates energy that is stored in the internal battery. The more you move, the more energy is created. After you’ve gone for your evening jog or hiked up a mountain, you can unleash the stored electricity via the USB 2.0 port. Tremont Electric ships the charger with a USB cable and micro USB adaptor. iPhone and iPod users will need to purchase an additional adaptor

Just don’t try to charge your laptop. The company notes that laptops require more power than the nPower PEG generates. Tablets like the iPad can be charged, but only to about 15 percent.

Still, it’s pretty useful for all those other gadgets in your backpack or purse. If you’re wondering how far you’d have to walk to call your mom, Tremont Electric has a handy guide:

1 minute of walking = 1 minute of listening on an iPod Nano
11 minutes of walking = 1 minute of talk time during a 2G call on an iPhone
26 minutes of walking = 1 minute of talk time during a 3G call on an iPhone

The 10.5-inch tall nPower PEG cylinder is available for purchase at REI for $200.

BlackBerry Messenger 6.0 screenshots leak

bbm 6
A leaked early version of RIM's upcoming BlackBerry Messenger 6 has been making the rounds since late February, but images of the new app are just now beginning to appear. Over at CrackBerry, the crew has shared a handful of images of BBM 6 in action. Unfortunately, you won't get a glimpse at a chat or file transfer -- only the profile screens (after the break) and what you see above. All that's really revealed so far is the option to set custom contact and chat colors and BlackBerry OS 6.1-style icons.

CrackBerry also warns against installing the leaked BBM 6 app. There's no guarantee this app hasn't been tampered with, and BlackBerry devices are becoming a more common target for cybercriminals.

HTC One VX for AT&T hands-on: mid-range style on a budget (video)

HTC One VX for AT&T handson midrange style on a budget video

What do you get when you raid HTC's parts bin and combine the camera from the One V, the screen resolution from the One S and the design language from the One X? Say hello to HTC's One VX for AT&T, a stylish mid-range smartphone running Ice Cream Sandwich and Sense 4. It features a 4.5-inch qHD Super LCD 2 display with Gorilla Glass 2, Qualcomm 1.2GHz dual-core Snapdragon S4 processor (MSM8930) with GSM/EDGE/UMTS/HSPA+/LTE radio, 1GB DDR2 RAM, 8GB of on-board storage and a five megapixel f/2.0 autofocus BSI camera with flash and 1080p video recording.

The front glass incorporates the earpiece, AT&T logo and VGA shooter up top along with the usual capacitive buttons (back, home and recent apps / menu) below the display. A silver plastic rim traces the sides of the handset -- it's a simple and familiar layout, with the power / lock key, headphone jack and secondary mic on top, micro-USB port and primary mic at the bottom, and the volume rocker on the right edge. Pop the white plastic back cover and you'll find micro-SIM and microSD card slots, a non-removable 1810mAh battery and the NFC antenna.

Unfortunately, we were given a non-functional dummy unit to play with so we can't comment on things like screen quality or subjective performance. We can tell you that the phone is light, thin and feels good in the hand -- it slots somewhere between the One S and the One X in terms of size, and looks nice despite being made of cheaper materials than its stablemates. AT&T and HTC are still mum on availability but we were told to expect aggressive, budget-friendly pricing. Want to see more? Take a look at our gallery below and our hands-on video after the break.

Update: we expect to see a working One VX at today's AT&T announcement so stay tuned for more impressions.

Make home automation simple with Nexia Home and your iPhone - Enter to win a Starter Bundle!

Nexia Home (formerly Schalge LiNK) has been my go-to system for home automation for quite some time. I first checked it out quite a while ago, and more recently, Georgia got to test the setup for herself. While the Nexia system gave us an indoor camera (both wired and wireless), thermostat, lamp module and door locks -- it was still lacking in the sensor department. All that has changed now however as Nexia has recently released both a door/window sensor and an indoor motion sensor. Both of these really add some great versatility to the whole setup, and with the addition of an outdoor wireless camera (due out in the coming weeks), Nexia is staying on top of their game.

No matter if you already have a Nexia system or you're just starting out, adding the new devices to your setup couldn't be simpler. I won't dive into setting up the entire system since we've been down that road already, but we'll check out how adding the new sensors makes the Nexia system even more awesome.

You will obviously need to choose where you want to use your new sensors before you get going. Depending on your system you may have more than one door, window or room that you want to monitor. If you're already using a camera or lamp module inside, you can create scenes that will record video or turn on your lights when the corresponding sensor is triggered. Any time something is triggered, you can also choose to receive an email or SMS. There are a load of combinations and triggers with which to setup your Nexia system. I've wasted hours tweaking my scenes to get them just right, but I still find myself rearranging them constantly.

From UPS drop-off to "up and running" was only about 15 minutes for the new sensors (setting up a new system is a much longer task). For the motion sensor you just need to pop off the outer cover and install the battery. From there, enroll the sensor with your bridge using the provided instructions. Once it's enrolled it will show in your dashboard and it's ready for mounting using the included double sided tape or screws.

The door/window sensor works in the same manner -- tap the button to enroll the sensor, wait for it to be accepted then find a door or window you want to monitor and install both parts of the sensor. Done and done.

For my setup I chose to use the door/window sensor on my patio door and the motion sensor in my foyer. I setup a scene through my Nexia dashboard so that when the motion sensor is triggered my lamp module turns on and my camera records for two minutes. I also get a text message sent to my phone letting me know that my scene was triggered. This is all setup for late-night hours so I don't get constant triggers all day long.

The patio door sensor is just a great way to let me know if my patio door is opened without my knowledge when I'm away. I'm sure it will come in handy when my daughter starts romping around a bit more as well.

Of course all of this can be viewed and controlled from your iPhone with the free Nexia app. The app lets you see the status of your sensors, activate your door lock, view your camera, turn on your lamp modules, setup scenes and much more.

The door and window sensor is available for $49.99 while the motion sensor will run you $69.99.

Contest: If you're not ready to spring for a Nexia system just yet, you're in luck - we have one to give away. Just leave a comment here and you'll be entered to win a Nexia Home Starter Bundle that includes your choice of lock (deadbolt or lever), lamp module and bridge. You'll also get a new door/window sensor and motion sensor. The contest ends Monday at midnight.  Good luck!

A Country Road Bag Is The Only Travel Bag You Need [Daily Desired]

A couple of years ago I went to Brazil for a month. I took a backpack. One of my friends took a Country Road duffle, which is like a durable clown car for your clothes because impossibly enough, it fit enough stuff for four weeks. And it's much better looking than my tattered knapsack. More »

Sprint may be considering counter offer for MetroPCS

Android Central

Following yesterday's news that T-Mobile USA and MetroPCS would be officially commencing a reverse takeover (where the smaller company takes over the larger), we're hearing today that the deal may be getting even more interesting. Sprint, which had plans to buy MetroPCS previously, may be considering offering a higher amount for the company than what is currently agreed upon between T-Mobile and MetroPCS.

If you'll recall back to Sprint's first attempt to buy out MetroPCS for $8 billion, CEO Dan Hesse was reportedly hours away from closing the deal when it was overturned by the board of directors. Now that the threat of a combined T-Mobile / MetroPCS is all too real, Sprint may be more motivated to keep these two apart this time around.

Amazon opening Appstore to Japan, accepting submissions now

Amazon

Amazon today announced that it is accepting app submissions for distribution in its Appstore later this year in Japan. That'll bring a strong alternative source of Android applications to millions of people, as well as a potential new revenue source for developers.

No word on when downloads will be made available; Amazon merely said "later this year."
