Google Pockets Viewdle in Brewing Facial Recognition Face-off

Google-owned Motorola Mobility is acquiring Viewdle, a Ukrainian firm that makes facial recognition technology. Motorola had been in talks with Viewdle before it was acquired by Google. The acquisition of Viewdle, a pioneer in technology that recognizes and tags people in photos, figures to be a boon for Google+, Android and other Google services. Earlier this year, Facebook acquired Israeli-based Face.com, which also makes facial recognition software.

March 31 is World Backup Day 2011

World Backup Day 2011
Those benevolent armchair philanthropist Redditors are at it again! Four days ago a 'self' post extolling the potential virtues of a Backup Day exploded with 2500 upvotes and 1000 comments -- and now World Backup Day 2011 is actually happening.

On March 31, as part of the global data-saving initiative, you are encouraged to back up all of your cherished photos and videos, and important documents. If you've ever had a hard disk fail, and not had a backup to fall back on, you'll know that it's a bit like losing a sizable fragment of your soul. If you've never backed up your important files -- or if you only back up sporadically -- do it on World Backup Day!

It's not hard to back up your data, either. A 2TB drive costs only a fistful of dollars, and it takes just a few minutes to set SyncToy for Windows, or Time Machine for Mac, to mirror your data every night. If you prefer a cloud-based solution, there's always SugarSync and Dropbox. Finally, don't forget that Bundlelytic has a charity giveaway for three excellent data-backup-and-recovery tools -- $160 of software for only $25, and 100% of the proceeds to go the Japanese Red Cross.

For even more backup options, for Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux, check our list of 13 great backup programs.

Watch the Leaves Change From Your Couch

It’s about that time of year where the leaves begin to change color, if you live in a fall folliage area.  But if you don’t?

A designer in Japan has crafted paper leaves that are sensitive to temperature change.  At room temperature (68-77°F), the leaf remains green.  Temperatures below that point will turn the leaf brown, while temperatures above will turn them yellow.  Each leaf includes an adhesive backing in order to stick to a surface to use as a thermometer.

There are currently two options to choose from – 5 large leaves (2.6″ x 6.6″) or 8 small leaves (1.7″ x 4.4″) for $22 from Reckless!Excessive!!Japan!!!.

Roku and 3M Team Up for Mobile Streaming Movie Night

Streaming under the stars. Photo: 3M

Watching movies outside is sublime. Dragging your fancy HDTV outdoors, not so much. Now Roku and 3M want you to relive the glory of projected entertainment in a tiny package. Just make sure you still have Wi-Fi access.

The Streaming Projector is just what you need to recreate the drive-in experience without the dust, the tinny sound and the horrible concession food. The Roku powered 3M projector is small enough to fit in your hand so you won’t throw your back out projecting your favorite movies onto the blank wall in the backyard. Just don’t expect an all-in-one package.

Instead of integrating Roku into the projector, a Roku Streaming Stick plugs into the battery-powered projector for on-the-go video action. 3M states that the projector will last for two hours and 30 minutes. That’s more than enough to stream most of the Hollywood blockbusters available on Netflix from the Roku Streaming Stick.

The projector creates a 120-inch WVGA quality image on the wall of your choice. A 12-foot wide projection won’t recreate the movie-in-the-park experience, but it’s adequate enough to delight your friends in your backyard or abandoned warehouse.

Just make sure that warehouse or backyard is dark. At 60 lumens, the Streaming Projector’s display will be difficult, if not impossible, to see during twilight hours. But once the sun goes down or the lights go out, the tiny projector should appease your drive-in theater cravings.

The Streaming Projector will be available exclusively on Amazon for $300 this fall.

Libra for Android helps you track your weight using The Hacker's Diet system

libra
I'm getting fat; that's what you see on the screenshot to the right -- my gradual move from chubby to portly. But never mind the numbers, look at the pretty graph!

If you've ever read The Hacker's Diet, this graph should be instantly recognizable. Each point shows the weight for a given day, while the trend line lets you see if you're gaining or losing weight.

When I use my "main" PC, I have a homebrew solution for creating and maintaining this graph. But I've had to find a temporary solution for Android, and Libra is it.

It's a beautifully simple app, very true to the spirit of The Hacker's Diet. You can create a shortcut on your homescreen that brings you right into the data entry screen, so you just tap the shortcut every morning, feed in your weight for the day and hit OK, and then you get to see your progress (or lack thereof) on the graph.

The app remembers the previous day's weigh-in, which makes it easy to enter today's weight (as they're usually not too different). The graph is zoomable and scrollable, and most importantly, you can export the data to CSV so you're not locked into the app.

If you ever need to track your weight using an Android device for any period of time, Libra is one excellent solution.

Rovio teases Star Wars-themed Angry Birds

Android Central

Rovio Entertainment has just slipped out a cryptic animated GIF of one of the Angry Birds with a lightsaber. Whether that means we'll see a full-blown Android game with little green pigs dressed up like stormtroopers is anyone's guess, but Rovio promises that we'll learn more at an event in Times Square, New York, at 10 AM EST on October 8 (next Monday). They also gently suggest that we hit up Toys R Us at 8 AM EST, so it's entirely likely that this is just some kind of new plushie they're selling.

Rovio is no stranger to licensing deals, having scored a fairly big one with Disney for the film Rio last year. More recently, Rovio is coming off of their launch of Bad Piggies, a physics-based building game featuring the antagonists of their first hit mobile game. An excess of cross-branding deals like this could make the Angry Birds brand even more stale than the plethora of toys, calendars, and other merchandise have. Then again, if they have a fresh spin on the Angry Birds gameplay and do the Star Wars franchise justice, it could freshen up the birds for another couple of months.

Are you guys optimistic about the next Angry Birds, or has it been done to death? Star Wars fans, do you find this kind of cross-licensing tacky or cute?

Vic Gundotra post hints Snapseed for Android may be close, bring Google integration

Vic Gundotra post hints Snapseed for Android may be close, bring Google tiein

When Google bought Nik Software, there was some worry that Snapseed would go the proverbial dodo's route and fade into obscurity as part of a larger Google app. We won't see that ignominious end anytime soon if Senior Engineering VP Vic Gundotra's photography is as valid a clue as it looks. On an evening flight to Baltimore, Gundotra posted a view of the setting sun to Google+ using Snapseed -- a rather unique achievement given that the existing, iOS-only app doesn't know the social network exists. Knowing the executive's usual choice of smartphone, the public use could be the hint of the already planned Android port getting close to launch, even if there's no way to know exactly when and how the image editing app could arrive. Let's hope that Gundotra's post is more than just a fleeting glimpse of a product that gets shelved later on.

Windows 8 welcome screen revealed, looks very Metro

windows 8 welcome screen
It's not really a secret the Microsoft had planned on bringing bits of Windows Phone 7's Metro UI to Windows 8, but we haven't seen a lot of really telling evidence. However, with the Windows 8 milestone 3 build now available to Microsoft Connect partners, it was really just a matter of time before we started to get a peek.

Thanks to Rafael Rivera and Paul Thurrott, we've now had a glimpse at what the Windows 8 welcome screen will look like. As you can see, the typography is very Metro indeed. Within Windows also mentions that the background image is customizable, and we're wondering if it might not pull from your current Windows 8 theme. This particular shot shows the CTRL + ALT + DELETE login option, but we imagine you'll still be able to log in by clicking your account picture tile as well.

Rivera and Thurrott also mention that the tablet version of the welcome screen will allow you to log in by swiping a pattern on the screen -- as you can on current Android devices.
