Watching This Polar Bear Smash a $2,000 Camera Lens Is Surprisingly Cute [Animals]

This polar bear is probably a really big Nikon fan that just loves to destroy expensive things because he was caught chomping, throwing and smashing a $2,100 Canon 70-200mm f/2.8 IS telephoto lens. It's pretty hilarious to see a giant polar bear play around with a camera lens, it looks like he tries to smoke it, drink it, eat it and even flick it. More »

Windows Home Server 2011 released to manufacturers

windows home server 2011 whs
Just a little under two months after its release candidate went live, Windows Home Server (WHS) 2011 has been finalized and released into the wild. The new version of Microsoft's slick, do-it-all server OS is a big step forward from its predecessor.

Built on the Windows Server 2008 R2 base, Home Server 2011 features a simpler dashboard, a better backup solution, dead simple remote access to your home computers, and Silverlight-powered remote media streaming. For a more detailed look at what's new in Windows Home Server 2011, you check out Microsoft's official breakdown.

Drive Extender, of course, didn't resurface for the final release of WHS 2011 and that's something a lot of power users are still pretty irked about. Even without Extender, Windows Home Server offers a boatload of useful functionality and might be a good fit for your home network. Manufacturers have already begun building hardware, so you should be able to pick up a device in the very near future.

An evaluation download for Windows Home Server 2011 will be made available in April -- we'll let you know when the links are ready.

Zen Coding high-speed HTML shorthand plug-in updated

zencoding
Zen Coding made quite a splash when we first covered it almost a year ago. For those who aren't familiar, Zen is a fantastic form of shorthand for quickly hand-coding HTML. And today, a new version is out!

Here are some of the goodies version 0.7 brings to the party:

  • Text nodes: Writing something like a[href=/]{Click here} now works, and puts "Click here" within the link.
  • New actions added: Increment/decrement number under cursor, evaluate math expressions, and more.
  • Wrap with Abbreviation was upgraded.
There are several other improvements but they're all rather technical. If you use Zen Coding (or are intrigued by the concept) go ahead and read the release notes for this new version.

Zen Coding has official implementations for a ton of editors, including TextMate, Apatana, Coda, E2, Komodo, Notepad++, PSPad, and more. It also has unofficial builds for Vim, UltraEdit, Visual Studio and more.

If you want to play with Zen Coding without installing it, you can use the online demo to see some of its magic in action.

ANicelyDone Stylus Handpad Review

If you enjoy drawing, doodling or note taking with a stylus on your tablet, you’ve probably run into the issue of not being able to rest your entire hand on the display while drawing. Although some note taking and drawing apps have a palm rejection feature, most do not. For those that don’t, I have a solution for you. It’s the Stylus Handpad fromĀ ANicelyDone. Let me show you what it is and how it works.

Note: Images can be clicked to view a larger size.

First of all, what is it? It’s basically a small suede leather pad with a loop for your pinky finger. It also comes with a stylus that looks and feels exactly like a Targus stylus which usually costs $14 by itself. The Handpad features an elastic band that you can use to hold the stylus when it’s not being used. This is a weird feature and if it were up to me, I’d just remove it because I’d never use it.

The pad is available in what they call Orange, it’s more of a rust in my opinion, and Navy. The bottom of the Handpad is Grey. The pad itself is soft and slightly cushioned.

You can tell from the shape, that the Handpad has been designed for Right handed people. Your pinky is placed through the suede loop and according to the pictures on the ANicelyDone website, you’re supposed to cinch down the loop by pulling the strap on the bottom side. The strap on my sample is glued to the bottom of the Handpad though. Regardless, I don’t think it’s necessary to tighten it…

The idea is that your entire palm will rest on the Handpad and the Handpad will rest on the tablet’s display. Suede doesn’t conduct electricity, so your tablet won’t “know” that it’s being multi-touched with the stylus and your palm. Clever!

I mentioned that the Handpad has been designed for Right handed people, of which I am not. I’m a Lefty. No problem though, the Handpad can still be used by us too.

ANicelyDone should just make a rectangular or triangle shaped Handpad that looks more ambidextrous.

I tested the Handpad with my GoSmart Stylus and several of the drawing apps I have on my iPad: Sketchbook Pro, Layers, ArtRage, Paper and procreate. All I can say is that I really like this simple accessory. It allows me to draw in a more natural way than before, which feels more like drawing on paper than a touch screen. The Handpad feels comfortable to use, doesn’t get in the way of the stylus and is definitely going on my Julie’s Favorite Gear List. I love it when a problem gets solved in such a simple way. You can’t really beat the price of the Handpad either. For $12 +$2.29 postage (US), you even get a stylus with it. Granted, the stylus is not that great, but it makes an ok back up. :) If you like to draw or write on your tablet, you will love the Stylus Handpad.

Product Information

Price:$12.00
Manufacturer:ANicelyDone
Pros:
  • Allows you to rest your palm on the tablet screen while drawing
  • Doubles as a screen cleaner
Cons:
  • No left handed version, but lefties can use it anyway

New iPad Smart Covers

new ipad smart coverAt the release of the iPad 2, Apple also brought out its Smart Cover product, which quickly became a favorite. Although the new iPad 3 is a little thicker through the middle than the iPad 2 (due to a bigger battery), it is still compatible with the previous Smart Covers that are currently for sale. This is excellent news as the Smart Cover not only protects the iPad screen from scratches and scrapes but is also functional and practical, and a stylish choice.

The Smart Cover uses magnets within the iPad to align it perfectly to the iPad. Third party cases can sometimes be a bit of a struggle to line up on the iPad – sometimes the case slips and the home button is not easily accessible, or it can be a struggle to fit the charger lead into the socket. So the magnetized Smart Cover is a welcome change.

The Smart Cover can automatically wake the device when the cover is opened, meaning users no longer need to hit the home button or power button to access the iPad. This is just a small and simple feature but incredibly useful.

The Smart Cover is also capable of supporting the iPad in a standing position so that you can easily view movies and videos. The cover simply folds behind the iPad to prop it up. This is also very useful for FaceTime and Skype sessions. The cover can also be folded at a different angle to prop up the unit to make typing easier. This can be especially helpful if you are composing a long email or document.

There are two material choices with the Smart Cover, and a whole range of colors to choose from. For bright vibrant colors, the obvious choice is the polyurethane cover, available in black, gray, pink, green and blue. There is also a traditional leather cover which comes in brown, black, gray, white and red. Both of the materials are lined with microfiber which works to remove smudges and fingermarks from the screen when the cover is closed, as well of course as keeping it safe from scratches.

No matter your personal preference in terms of color and material, the Smart Cover cannot be beaten on functionality and usefulness. Many cases for the iPad can be quite bulky and add a significant amount of weight and bulk to the device. However the Smart Cover is slim and sleek while still giving protection. In addition, the extra features make it a great and stylish choice for any new iPad owner, or a great gift choice for the iPad owner in your family!

Toyota pulls Cydia theme and ads to appease Apple

Apple asks Toyota to remove jailbreak Cydia theme
In news that will no doubt shake the very bedrock of your belief system, Apple has asked Toyota to remove its Scion theme and its advertising from ModMyi, a Cydia repository. The Scion theme has been available for weeks, but after it received a ton of press in the last couple of days, Apple finally lashed out.

It's not like we should be surprised, considering Apple has claimed in the past that jailbreaking is illegal -- but at the same time, did the Cupertino cronies hear about the ruling that made circumventing DRM, and thus jailbreaking, legal? Anyway, whether Toyota was supporting illegal, legal, or deliciously gray and ambiguous, activity, it doesn't matter: Apple asked Toyota to remove the theme, and Toyota graciously bent over and capitulated.

This story raises a much more interesting topic, though: this is the first time a multinational company has publicly acknowledged and embraced the jailbreak community. Considering jailbreaking is technically legal, and Cydia's creator, Jay Freeman, estimates that up to 9% of OS devices are jailbroken, it simply makes good, commercial sense to target jailbreakers with ads. Toyota was simply trying to make some money, for shame!

As long as Apple continues to throw around its increasingly-expansive mass, the legality of jailbreaking will continue to be inconsequential. It will be interesting to see if another big company dares embrace the jailbreak community after this, too.

Microsoft's Digits Could Turn Us All Into Hand Dancers

The long-lived and usually reliable mouse could soon be put out to pasture, as Microsoft unveiled this week a new hand-gesture sensor that could allow users to point with their fingers rather than a cursor. The new Digits prototype is part of an effort to create a mobile device that could transform interaction with a computer interface. This wrist-worn sensor would allow the wearer to control a range of equipment via hand gestures, which could allow it to be an interface beyond the computer screen.

Google Talk Guru answers questions via your IM app

google talk guru answersBots -- like the kind which automate IRC rooms and Google Wave -- are a good thing to know about. There are plenty of useful bots worth knowing about, too, including the Google Talk Guru.

Just add guru@googlelabs.com to your GTalk buddies, and you can start firing off questions. Lifehacker suggests that the same types of queries supported by Google SMS will work, though we didn't have any luck getting a response out of the Guru with phrases like "score detroit red wings" or "sushi R3N 1Y1."

Still, Guru does answer a good variety of questions and it works right within your favorite IM app. It's well worth adding to your friend list, especially for getting answers on the go on your mobile device of choice.
