Moog shows off LEV-96 sensoriactuator prototype on an acoustic guitar

Image

Moogfest isn't happening for another week, but the synth-maker couldn't wait to take the wraps off of its latest bit of technology. Still in the early days of beta-testing ,the LEV-96 is a far cry from the classic analog instruments we've come to associate with Moog. The company is showing off the sensoriactuator in its early stages by affixing it to a guitar, with two pickup channels beneath each of the acoustic's strings. The strings' vibrations trigger the sound, with the device "bring[ing] out hidden modes of vibration that have always been there, but were never energized in a direct manner," according to the company -- in all, the system is capable of managing up to 96 simultaneous harmonics. On the LEV-96, you'll find touch-based control sliders, which let the player adjust intensity, harmonics and note duration. Additional triggers let you change arpeggio presets and modulation (tremolo and random harmonics), while a lock button makes sure you don't adjust anything by accident.

Moog is careful to point out that the LEV-96 we're seeing (still being referred to as a "concept project") is just the tip of the iceberg, and "could easily be affixed to any surface or material." The company has promised to show the concept in action soon, including an appearance at Moogfest on October 26th and 27th in the company's home of Asheville, North Carolina. Cueboy Quest is an adorable 8-bit style physics game

cueboyquest
Yes, that's right, I said adorable. Because Cueboy Quest really is!

You play an 8-bit cowboy whose goal on each level is to get to the door (and thus to the next level), but the door is often locked. To get it to open, you must shoot at one or more targets, and those targets aren't always in your line of sight. For example, on one level the the target is a balloon which is stuck all the way at the other end of the screen. You must first nudge it free, and then watch it float up and try to shoot it before it floats clear off the screen. Your bullets are chunky pixels that have some weight - the have arcing trajectories, so you don't always hit exactly where you aim.

There's another level where you must jump on the balloon as it floats up, use it as a platform to get to the other end of the screen, and then turn to shoot it very quickly before it flies away. Each level is very short, and most of them are quite easy. And not only are the graphics 8-bit blocky, but they're large too. Simply beautiful!

Samsung Galaxy Rugby Pro available on AT&T October 21st for $100

Fans of rugged Android phones, rejoice: you only have to wait until this Sunday to get the Samsung Galaxy Rugby Pro on AT&T. The carrier just announced that it'll be making its way into stores on October 21st and will run you a whole $100 on a two-year commitment. It isn't going to be the stellar top-end device many power users crave, as it features a 4-inch WVGA Super AMOLED display, 5MP rear-facing camera with 720p video recording, 8GB onboard storage, ICS, LTE, Enhanced Push-to-Talk, 810g military-spec certification and EAS corporate email support. It's a definite upgrade from the Smart, no doubt, but we're still pining for the day that rugged phones can have the best components and bounce off a concrete floor without incident.

Interlocked is a three-dimensional brain teaser

interlocked
Back when I was a kid, I used to love crafting ornate puzzle boxes out of Lego. There would be just one way to open the box, by carefully shifting and rotating a bunch of pieces. Well, either that, or breaking the box in frustration.

Interlocked takes that spirit and turns it into a beautiful Flash game. It's a good thing the soundtrack is soothing, because the game itself can get pretty frustrating.

At the start of each level, you're presented with a box built out of blocks in different colors. You can click and drag the mouse to rotate the box any which way. Once you decide you want to shift a part of the box, hit SPACE to switch into "move" mode. You can then click any part of the box and drag it. Of course, you can only move a part as long as nothing is in its way. So it becomes a matter of understanding how the box is built, and what parts you need to move around so you could eventually take the box apart.

It's a tricky, difficult game, but it's a great brain teaser -- and definitely a keeper.

Nokia CEO Elop Says Microsoft Surface Phone Would Stimulate Ecosystem

Nokia CEO Stephen Elop. Photo: Ariel Zambelich/Wired

Nokia’s CEO Stephen Elop says he isn’t worried about Microsoft making its own Windows Phone 8 hardware. In fact, Elop says that Nokia encourages all other companies, including its competitors, to make Windows Phone devices, and that a Microsoft-made WP8 Surface smartphone would be “a stimulant to the ecosystem.”

Though Microsoft has yet to announce plans to make any phone hardware, there are rumors that Redmond will get into the smartphone hardware market. In an investor call on Thursday, Elop appeared to welcome the potential of a Surface smartphone, which would share a brand name with Microsoft’s Surface tablet. The Nokia CEO made his statement in response to questions about whether a Surface phone would be seen as a competitor.

“We’re encouraging of HTC and Samsung and Microsoft or whomever to have devices in the market and to be making whatever investments that helps spur the ecosystem on,” Elop responded.

Nokia is Microsoft’s most committed partner when it comes to Windows Phone. The company is hanging its smartphone business on the fledgling platform with its Lumia line, which includes the upcoming Windows Phone 8 Lumia 920 and and 820, set to launch in November. But if Microsoft were to come out with its own WP8 hardware, Elop says that Nokia would be ready with “unpolished gems” from the company R&D lab. He assured investors that Nokia is working on devices that will be different (and presumably better) no matter the Windows Phone competition.

Elop said earlier this month that he had no indication that Microsoft plans to make its own hardware. His most recent remarks, however, indicate that Nokia is at least keeping Microsoft’s potential phone in mind. Nonetheless, the Nokia CEO remains firm in his belief that the Lumia Windows Phone handsets will stand apart from other offerings. “We’re very proud of the unique differentiation that we are bringing to the Windows Phone platform,” he said. “It’s not something that’s easily replicated or reinvented or anything like that.”
