Fake Your Own Death this Halloween With an Air Compressor Blood Cannon

Halloween presents a wonderful excuse for a lot of things, one of the best probably being the simulation of murder and suicide for the purpose of terrifying innocent children. It's a bit difficult to pull it off live, but if you're into the idea of making a festively gory flick, an air compressor blood cannon can go along way. More »

Speedtest.net overhauled with new look, new features

speedtest
Speedtest.net is pretty much the go-to site for quickly figuring out how fast (or slow) your connection really is and comparing the numbers your ISP boasts with what it actually delivers. And now it's got a new coat of paint and a couple of neat features. In brief:
  • New UI: The map widget is much improved; it actually looks like a map now, and it's easy to see where you are.
  • Smart server selection: If there are several test servers nearby, Speedtest will now ping each to see which has the least latency and use that for the test. You can still specify servers manually, too.
  • User accounts: You can sign up for a free account and aggregate results from several computers/connections.
  • Speed Wave: This new feature lets you add your test results to the results of many other users, and get a nice composite view.
All in all, you get some nice, new functionality and a snazzier interface to boot. Nice!

Nexus 10 Leaks Point to Better-Than-iPad Display

A screenshot of Vic Gundotra’s beach photo, taken with a Nexus 10 and shared on Google+.

Google has been springing leaks about its upcoming 10-inch Nexus tablet for weeks, revealing details about the iPad fighter that is widely expected to be unveiled Monday at an Android event in New York. But the most notable information leak comes from one of Google’s own top executives, Vic Gundotra. The exec posted two images to his Google+ profile Friday morning that, according to the listed photo details, were taken with a device called a Nexus 10.

Nexus 10 is, of course, the expected name of the rumored Samsung and Google device that will serve as a follow-up to the Asus-built Nexus 7 tablet. As the Nexus 7 has a 7-inch display, the Nexus 10 is expected to have a 10.1-inch display.

Gundotra, a senior vice president at Google and frequent on-stage presenter at the company’s press events, posted two photos from an unnamed beach Friday, as first reported by the website Android Central.

More details emerged on Friday after the website BriefMobile claimed that it had gotten its hands on a Nexus 10. Those details include a dual-core 1.7GHz Samsung Exynos CPU, 2GB of RAM, 16GB of storage, a 10.1-inch display with a monstrous resolution of 2560 x 1600 pixels, NFC, and a 5-megapixel rear camera. Judging by BriefMobile’s photos published, the Nexus 10 looks a lot like a Galaxy Tab 10.1 or Galaxy Note 10.1 with a Nexus logo on the back. The photos match up perfectly with illustrations in a purported Nexus 10 user manual that landed on Korean news site Seeko on Thursday. The design isn’t terribly exciting, but the display resolution would peg the Nexus 10 ahead of the iPad, at least on paper. Apple’s third- and fourth-generation iPads feature a 9.7-inch Retina Display with a resolution of 2048 x 1536 pixels.

The Nexus 10 leaks follow weeks of leaked information on the new Nexus 4 smartphone, built by LG in collaboration with Google.

Google is expected to be debuting both the Nexus 4 and the Nexus 10 at an event in New York on Monday. The event, and the new devices, come at a crucial time for Google and its Android operating system as rivals Apple and Microsoft are also launching new products. Earlier this week, Apple unveiled its new iPad Mini and it’s fourth-generation full-size iPad. On Monday, just three hours after Google’s Android even is set to begin, Microsoft will host an event in San Francisco to formally launch its Windows Phone 8 software, running on new phones from Samsung, HTC and Nokia.

Nexus 4 user manuals go live on LG's support page

LG Nexus 4 User Manual

Remember that LG Nexus 4 support page that went live yesterday? Well now the page has been updated with user manuals for the device. We've been calling this device the Nexus 4 for a long time now, and this manual has confirmed that for us. Also something to note here is that there are two different manuals -- one 8GB, one 16GB. Both manuals seem to be the exact same, but that still gives us some information. Based on what we see here, we may be looking at just those two storage capacities for the next Nexus device.

The manuals also confirm the existence of an inductive charging coil, which occupies a pretty big space under the back plate. We picked this out in the FCC documentation all the way back when the first leaks hit, so we saw that one coming. Inductive charging on the device doesn't do much good without the accessories to support it though, so hopefully Google does a better job with these than the Galaxy Nexus docks.

If you're still curious and want to thumb through the manuals, head to the source link below. And remember, we'll see it all straight from Google on Monday morning.

Sony intros Virtual Book Club, enlists 'Breakfast Club' alum

Need to talk about books, but hate going over to other people's homes? Move over Oprah, because Sony's helping virtualize the whole experience with Readers Book Club, a virtual book club that lets reader chat with authors via Twitter and Facebook. Also on the slate are discounts and downloadable extra. The club kicks off next month, but you'll have to wait until March for some one-on-one time with Molly Ringwald.

Amazon Appstore for Android Test Drive hands on: surprisingly cool, but still US-only

Amazon Appstore for Android Test Drive
When Amazon Appstore for Android launched last week, one of its primary features -- Test Drive -- was disabled just a few minutes after it opened. With no try-before-you-buy, no refund process, and 1-Click purchasing ready to strike at any moment, this caused some problems. Anyway, don't despair: Test Drive is now enabled.

Before you get your hopes up, Test Drive doesn't work with every app. The IMDb app works fine -- you can even watch movie trailers on it! -- but the Angry Birds games are sadly not enabled. Some games work surprisingly well, though, like Bubble Buster. There's very little latency, and the framerate is really rather good. The Test Drive experience is so true to life that you even get ads; how cool is that?

Apple posts "Samsung didn't copy iPad" notice in the UK

https://twitter.com/hykang/statuses/261719847224872961

In compliance with a U.K. court ruling, Apple has posted their "Samsung didn't copy iPad" notice. At least after a fashion. The notice is rather long, and meticulously crafted by Apple's lawyers. It mentions patents rather than devices in the "apology" up front, and gets its own back in the middle by quoting the judge as saying Samsung isn't as cool, and at the end by citing a German court ruling that did find Samsung violated Apple's design, as well as Apple's massive, billion dollar win over Samsung in U.S courts. And yes, they posted it in Arial.

Since I'm not sure how long it will remain up on apple.com/uk, here's the complete text:

Samsung / Apple UK judgment

On 9th July 2012 the High Court of Justice of England and Wales ruled that Samsung Electronic (UK) Limited’s Galaxy Tablet Computer, namely the Galaxy Tab 10.1, Tab 8.9 and Tab 7.7 do not infringe Apple’s registered design No. 0000181607-0001. A copy of the full judgment of the High court is available on the following link www.bailii.org/ew/cases/EWHC/Patents/2012/1882.html.

In the ruling, the judge made several important points comparing the designs of the Apple and Samsung products:

"The extreme simplicity of the Apple design is striking. Overall it has undecorated flat surfaces with a plate of glass on the front all the way out to a very thin rim and a blank back. There is a crisp edge around the rim and a combination of curves, both at the corners and the sides. The design looks like an object the informed user would want to pick up and hold. It is an understated, smooth and simple product. It is a cool design."

"The informed user's overall impression of each of the Samsung Galaxy Tablets is the following. From the front they belong to the family which includes the Apple design; but the Samsung products are very thin, almost insubstantial members of that family with unusual details on the back. They do not have the same understated and extreme simplicity which is possessed by the Apple design. They are not as cool."

That Judgment has effect throughout the European Union and was upheld by the Court of Appeal on 18 October 2012. A copy of the Court of Appeal’s judgment is available on the following link www.bailii.org/ew/cases/EWCA/Civ/2012/1339.html. There is no injunction in respect of the registered design in force anywhere in Europe.

However, in a case tried in Germany regarding the same patent, the court found that Samsung engaged in unfair competition by copying the iPad design. A U.S. jury also found Samsung guilty of infringing on Apple's design and utility patents, awarding over one billion U.S. dollars in damages to Apple Inc. So while the U.K. court did not find Samsung guilty of infringement, other courts have recognized that in the course of creating its Galaxy tablet, Samsung willfully copied Apple's far more popular iPad.

Auslogics Disk Defrag 3.2 gets smarter, faster

auslogics defrag
Auslogics Disk Defrag has been part of my system maintenance toolkit for quite some time. With the release of version 3.2, it's now even better at tidying up and optimizing your system's hard disk drives. In addition to a cleaner, easier-to-use interface, Disk Defrag 3.2 offers improved single file and folder defragging, better processing of multiple disks, a simplified scheduling screen, and more informative tool tips. Auslogics has also fine-tuned the program's defragmentation and file consolidation algorithms.

For laptop users, there's a new option to lock the program if your system is running on battery power -- so scheduled operations don't kick in and drain your power source at an inopportune moment. If you happen to have an SSD installed in your PC, you can head to the Disk Defrag options and exclude it from scanning (many think that defragmenting an SSD is a very bad idea).

Auslogics Disk Defrag is a free download and works with most versions of Windows.
