Apple posts revised 'Samsung did not copy' statement, acknowledges first version was inaccurate

Apple posts revised 'Samsung did not copy' statement

Apple has just reposted its statement acknowledging that Samsung did not copy its tablet design, after the initial wording was deemed unacceptable by the UK courts. The new version is a lot shorter, and simply repeats what it published in national newspapers this week, stating that the court did not find Samsung to be in breach of Apple's registered design No. 0000181607-0001, reminding us that it was also upheld by the Court of Appeal, providing links to the appropriate patent and judgement documents online. The mention of the same case going in Apple's favor in Germany has been removed completely. When first published, Apple included a short link at the bottom of its homepage. Now, to completely comply with the court's bidding, there is a short statement accompanying the link, confirming that its initial acknowledgement was inaccurate. The court also told Apple that it must keep the admission online until at least December 14th. Will this be enough to appease the UK courts? We'll just have to wait and see.

Nikon nudges Q2 net earnings to $203 million, DSLRs and Nikon 1 get all the credit

Image

Nikon might be treading water in Q2 2013 (its fiscal year is time-shifted) with a slight gain to $203 million from Q1, but in the current imaging market climate, that's not necessarily a bad thing. Revenue fell $200 million to $3 billion for the period, which Nikon chalked up to a "sluggish" economy and poor performance in its business, chip and science divisions, along with a rapidly shrinking compact camera market (smartphones, anyone?). Fortunately, the company fared better in the interchangeable lens game, singling out the Nikon 1 mirrorless brand as a "solid performer" as well as its popular DSLR line. Nikon predicts more of the same for the rest of the year, with interchangeable lens camera sales growing while other divisions waffle, resulting in a $750 million profit for the year -- a mirror-image of 2012.

Power Is Being Restored Through Lower Manhattan Right Now!

By Jesús Díaz

People are cheering on the streets! Seems like Con Edison is going to make it and the entirety of Manhattan will haver power today. We are still updating our Sandy story liveblog here. I’ve never been so happy to see a traffic light!

This is really good news. It means that the subway power-up of many lines is also imminent. Sadly, this doesn’t mean that we are free from the blackout yet. Many people still need power in parts of New York and New Jersey.

Sand Trap is a fun and difficult physics maze game

Sand Trap
Sand Trap is one of those games that at first seem too hard to bother with, but when you try to stop playing it you discover you're hooked.

The goal is to get as much sand as you possibly can out of the maze and into the bucket at the bottom of the screen. You need to rotate your maze every which way to get the sand rolling around it. You then try to direct the sand to one of the exits of the maze, and hopefully into the bucket. It took me several tries to actually get sand into the bucket, but that might be due to the fact that I didn't even realize the bucket was there at first. Things improved significantly after that.

As you level up, the mazes get more complicated, with moving parts and other things making your life more difficult. Once you manage to get through all these obstacles and get enough sand into your bucket, you can move on.

As I mentioned, this is not an easy game, but it's highly addictive. The graphics remind me of some long lost game from the 80s, but this just proves that you don't need super graphics and crazy sound to make a game work. There's a soothing guitar track playing in the background and that's it, as far as I could hear, and you can enjoy it just as much with no sound at all.

If you like a fun physics challenge, don't miss out on this one!

Windows 8 Explorer to feature Ribbon UI, SkyDrive and Mesh integration?

windows 8 explorer ribbon
Rafael Rivera and Paul Thurrott have posted a second look at some of the early changes which have surface in Windows 8 milestone 3. First there was the restyled Welcome Screen, and now it appears that Microsoft is toying with bringing the Ribbon UI to Explorer.

The Ribbon, like in Microsoft Word and Excel, is context-aware, adding tabs for specific tasks which apply to the folder you're viewing -- such as library or picture management. You can also make out two new buttons in the status bar, which allow you to change the current folder's view style.

It's clear from all the placeholder images and repeated elements that this is very much a work in progress, but featuring the Ribbon more prominently in Windows 8 would certainly be a logical progression for Microsoft. It's slowly become more ubiquitous, moving beyond Office and into Wordpad, Paint, and several of the Windows Live Essentials applications.

There's more to the screenshots than the Ribbon UI, however. Our friend Long Zheng has noted two interesting elements in the images: Web sharing and sync (image after the break). That would likely mean users will be able to quickly upload files to SkyDrive and synchronize using Live Mesh right from Explorer in Windows 8. That's not a total surprise considering many of the earliest leaked images of Windows 8 showed Windows Live integration on the desktop.

This Week’s Top Web Comedy Video: Romney Pours a Glass of Water

By Splitsider

With this election looming, it’s important to keep two seemingly contradictory ideas in your head: First, that voting is essential. And second, that laughing at politicians is an essential part of democracy. Especially when it’s Mitt Romney.

The rest of this week’s top comedy videos, including some still spooky Halloween-themed fun, can be found over at Splitsider.

Other highlights from the week in comedy:

- Jimmy Fallon and David Letterman did their shows without audiences for a night because of Hurricane Sandy wreaking havoc across the Northeast, while Bill Hader and this weekend’s host Louis C.K. promised that SNL will go on.

- Adult Swim picked up Dan Harmon’s new series Rick & Morty, while his old series, Community, finally got a premiere date (February 7th).

- A premiere date for Arrested Development was also set (April 2013).

- Letterman did Kimmel, Leno did Ferguson, and Stewart and Colbert also did Kimmel.

- NBC is turning Up All Night into a three-camera sitcom with a live audience and deciding against making a Dwight Schrute Office spin-off.

- We broke down the comedy of MST3K and the band Ween.

- We interviewed Kristen Schaal, stand-up Taylor Williamson, Happy Endings stars Adam Pally and Casey Wilson, Daily Show producers Tim Greenberg, Miles Kahn, and Stu Miller, women in comedy author Yael Kohen, and Nature Calls co-stars Patton Oswalt and Rob Riggle.

- We dug up Chevy Chase’s weird 1980 musical comedy album and the Freaks and Geeks audition tapes.

- We looked at the technological advances of comedy trailblazers Lucille Ball, Desi Arnaz, Jerry Lewis, and Louis C.K.

- We watched justly canceled sitcom Work It and the comedy school documentary Finding the Funny.

- We examined 10 other sitcom spin-offs, besides Dwight Schrute’s The Farm, including planned shows about Krusty the Clown, Phoebe from Friends, and Norm & Cliff from Cheers.

- We Follow Fridayed @Justin Shane.

Splitsider is a website about comedy and the people who create it. It covers movies, TV shows, web videos, books and any other format that exists to make you laugh.
