Ask DLS: What's your primary Web browser?

Competition is a good thing, and the browser arena has been a fierce arena for years now. There are at least four "major" browsers each vying for your attention, along with lots of smaller spin-offs (SRWare Iron or Flock, anyone?).

While the browser usage charts we share from time to time show overall browser usage amongst the Web at large, Download Squad readers are not exactly the average bunch in terms of browser use. So today we have one simple question for you:

What's your primary Web browser?

Bing begins roll out of HTML5-enhanced search interface

Bing transitions
Bing's new HTML5-and-CSS3-enhanced search interface, which was first demonstrated back in September 2010 to showcase the power of IE9, has started to roll out.

The most notable addition to the new interface is is smooth page transitions -- the fade in and out -- and navigation tabs (maps, images, videos, etc.) now persistently float at the top of the page. WinRumors is also reporting that a feature reminiscent of Google Instant search is being added to Bing, with page elements smoothly transitioning in and out as you type in your search query.

If you want to try out the new Bing UI, your best bet is to set your locale to United States - English and pray that you're part of the initial roll out. Alternatively, just wait a few days until MIX 2011, Microsoft's Web developer conference, which is when the new Bing UI should be officially launched.

Add a PAK to your EDC kit

The PAK personal accessories kit isn’t exactly a gadget, but it could be an important part of your everyday carry kit.  There are three sizes – the Original, Mini, and Micro – that are packed with an assortment of things that you might need on a daily basis or in an emergency.  Each kit comes in your choice of a black or green bag, and each bag comes with an optional shoulder strap so it can be carried alone.  Inside, you’ll get a variety of products, and the selection depends on the size of the bag.  The items include: antibiotic cream, bandages, two little boxes to hold medicines or other small items; toothbrush, paste, and floss; hand sanitizer and tissues; nail file and clippers; deodorant wipe and other items.  The Original is $50, the Mini is $40, and the Micro is $30.  You can also buy refills of the products from PAK as you need them.  You’ll be easily able to find what you need because “PAK’s patent pending, compartmentalized design secures content in place so the kit cannot become a disorganized mess.”  The PAK kits are available at the PAK website; check there for a store locator to see if you can purchase the kits locally.  (Click the photo for a larger view.)

This App Makes Your iPhone Recite Some Custom Shatner-esque Poetry

By Eric Limer

Surely you are well-acquinted with Mr. William Shatner’s fantastic spoken-word work. If you aren’t, you should be. If that’s your jam—and it should be—the new Shatoetry app will let you create some of your own, using the Cap’n Kirk’s iconic voice.

At it’s core, the Shatoetry app is basically a soundboard, but it’s a really intense soundboard. The app allows you to select from a wide, wide variety of words recorded in Shatner’s voice, but it doesn’t end there. Each word has three separate emphasis variants so you can find the right one. The really killer (and hilariously self-aware) feature is the ability to not only add works, but also pregnant pauses. Shatner-esque. Pregnant.

Pauses.

Currently only available on iOS, the app is $3, a bit steep for a glorified gimmick, but there is definitely some potential there. I mean, there’s no one else who’s voice could be nearly as desirable for this kind of thing. So pick it up if your interested, or maybe just go watch that video of Shatner covering “Rocket Man” on repeat. [Wired]

Review: Google Nexus 10 Tablet

Google and Samsung have teamed up to create the new Nexus 10 tablet. Play with it for a few minutes and it becomes obvious the two companies have exercised their many powers to get everything right.

The new device is very, very fast. It has the highest resolution display of any 10-incher on the market. The styling is restrained, but attractive. The case is lightweight and thin. The camera and the front-facing speakers are solid. The user interface is mature and polished, and the Nexus 10 provides the most pleasant experience I’ve ever seen on a big-screen Android tablet.

But, unfortunately, the same dark cloud hovering over all larger Android tablets also pains the Nexus 10: a lack of apps. There simply aren’t enough tablet-specific apps available on Android, and no matter how swift or shiny or sexy your hardware is, that really stings. It’s the apps that make the tablet.

Carphone Warehouse selling Galaxy S3 Mini from £25 monthly

Galaxy S3 Mini

We've gotten several bits of information on the pricing and availability of that awkwardly mid-range Galaxy S3 Mini before, and now Carphone Warehouse has released its pricing details. Falling in line with previous retailers, Carphone Warehouse will be selling the device SIM-free for "under £300" -- which falls into line with the other retailer's prices of about £298 -- as well as on-contract pricing with tariffs as low as £25 monthly and the device free.

It may have been an appealing low-cost option for folks in Europe, but since the pricing on the Nexus 4 has dropped its hard to see who picks this up over Google's latest superphone offering.

Russian Hacker Gets a Taste of His Own Malware

After a persistent series of attacks on its government computers by a Russian hacker, the Republic of Georgia got mad and refused to take it anymore. In a reversal of roles, members of the country's Computer Emergency Response Team suckered the cybermiscreant into downloading a file infected with his own spyware that allowed CERT to photograph the alleged hacker with his computer's webcam and ransack its hard drive for files. The Georgian CERT team discovered the hacker's activity in March 2011.

Nexus 4 review

Nexus 4 review

Movie sequels often don't live up to the hype of the original blockbuster, but the same isn't always true of smartphones -- on the contrary, they typically get even better. The Nexus lineup, initially thought of as a "playground" for Android developers to test their apps on, has continually gotten better at its craft (and popularity). Not only that, it's picking up momentum: in less than five months, Google has crafted two Nexus tablets as well as its latest and greatest smartphone known as the Nexus 4, and the attractively priced devices are now facing more interest than they ever have before.

The Nexus 4 is a veritable dreamboat when it comes to looks and specs. It's a smooth, elegant-looking device that comes with a large, 4.7-inch, HD display, a 1.5GHz quad-core Snapdragon S4 Pro processor and plenty of other appealing components. It exhibits a lot of commonalities to LG's current flagship, the Optimus G. And for a starting price of $299 unlocked, it's sure to attract a whole new demographic that until recently had never even heard of a Nexus. But is this a flagship smartphone that everyone will want to buy, or should the fourth-generation offering just be another target of developers' envy? Stay tuned past the break to find out.

32GB Nexus 7 'with Android 4.2' advertised in the UK

Android Central

Hold your horses -- the Nexus 7 doesn't have Android 4.2 just yet. But no-one seems to have told UK retailer HMV, which is putting out newspaper ads for the new 32GB version of Google's tablet, suggesting it'll come "with Android 4.2 Jelly Bean."

As Android 4.2 has yet to be finalized and open-sourced, you won't find it on any tablets currently on store shelves, and that includes the newly-released 32GB Nexus 7. But we're sure Google won't waste any time in pushing that 4.2 update out to Nexus 7 tablets just as soon as it's ready. Keep watching as we approach the Nov. 13 launch date for Nexus 4 and Nexus 10!
