Visualized: Space Shuttle Atlantis makes its final journey, arrives at new home (video)

On Friday, Space Shuttle Atlantis made its final voyage, marking the last time an orbiter in America's shuttle program would be on the move. We were on-hand during the occasion and followed Atlantis as it slowly trekked to its destination, a 90,000 square-foot exhibit building at Kennedy Space Center's Visitor Complex. To live out the event vicariously, check out the photos below or hit the jump for the video.

Android 'smishing' vulnerability discovered by NCSU researchers Google has a fix incoming

The art of smishing (SMS-Phishing) has been practiced for some time, but a discovery by the wizards at NC State University has uncovered a new vulnerability that could bring the aforesaid act back into the spotlight. Xuxian Jiang's research team recently identified the hole and confirmed that it impacts Gingerbread, Ice Cream Sandwich and Jelly Bean. Put simply, if an Android user downloads an infected app, the attacking program can "make it appear that the user has received an SMS, or text, message from someone on the phone's contact list or from trusted banks." This fake message can solicit personal information, such as passwords for user accounts. The team isn't going to disclose proof until Google patches it up, but the school has said that Google will be addressing it "in a future Android release." For now, however, Jiang recommends additional caution when downloading and installing apps from unknown sources, while also suggesting that folks pay close attention to received SMS text messages.

The iPad Mini Costs $141 More Than Its Components Add Up To

By Brian Barrett

According to a teardown by IHS, renowned estimator of how much companies actually pay for components, Apple’s iPad Mini carries a $188 cost of materials. You know how Google and Amazon are just barely breaking even on their tiny tablets? This is the opposite of that.

For some perspective, the 16GB Nexus 7 carries a $159.25 material cost and a $200 price tag. And Amazon has been very candid that it loses money on every Kindle Fire HD it sells. By contrast, there’s a $141 gap between the 16GB iPad mini’s asking price and its component value. Ka-ching!

It’s always been clear that Apple’s playing a different game from its tiny tablet competition; Google’s just desperately angling for a hardware foothold, while Amazon relies on content sales after the fact to make its initial losses worth it. Apple, meanwhile, wants to make money on hardware and software. Imagine! There’s nothing wrong with that of course, but reports like this only reinforce the notion that the iPad mini is heftily overpriced given its competitors.

There are also, of course, other factors that go into a device’s cost. Research and development, packaging, etc. But it’s not like Google and Amazon aren’t throwing great gobs of money in those directions either. And whether you love the iPad mini or hate it, at least now it’s clear that there are better bargains to be had elsewhere. [AllThingsD]

Taking the Windows 8 Plunge

If you're used to Microsoft's stratospheric pricing email program -- Outlook alone is $139.99 estimated retail -- take a look at the small print at Microsoft's Windows 8 website, and you'll see that a Windows 8 Pro upgrade can be downloaded for a limited-time at the measly price of $39.99. This is a surprising bargain from the monolith -- and a significant change in direction from the $100-plus upgrades we've been used to. So, grab that bank card and jump in.

Konstruct for iOS creates generative augmented reality art with your voice

Konstruct generative augmented reality art for iOS
If you have an artistic temperament, but you weren't blessed with steady hands or an eye for color, Konstruct might be the app for you. Not only does the iPhone app let you produce generative art using words, warbles and whistles, but it also uses augmented reality to bring your artistic creation to life.

To get started, you first need to print out the Konstruct marker and place it wherever you'd like to create your AR sculpture -- it could be on your living room wall, or on the floor of your bathroom, it doesn't matter. Open the app, point your iPhone at the marker, and start making some noises! Once you're done, you can save your creation, or simply wipe the slate clean and start again.

The volume of your voice affects the size of the shapes that are drawn on the screen, and you can move your head around to alter the path of your 'brush' -- but to change the shape of your brush or modify the color palette you have to use a menu. Without knowledge of the app's internal workings, it's hard to say what the actual difference between whistling, talking and singing is -- and judging by the developer's affinity for whistling in the demo video (after the break), the app probably doesn't perform that much analysis on your input.

Still, Konstruct is just a prototype! A later version could do away with menus and rely entirely on the location, tonality, quality and amplitude of your voice -- and judging by the the words of the developer, James Alliban, there is definitely more in store for Konstruct: "The idea of transforming entire cities into user generated virtual art galleries really appeals to me. I see Konstruct as an early prototype that will hopefully be realised in this form in the future."

Download Konstruct for free from the App Store (iPhone 3GS and 4 only)

[Thanks to Richard for the tip!]

Twitter Launches Election Map to Track Candidates’ State-by-State Messaging

Twitter’s new election map measures voter engagement on a state-by-state basis.

Twitter launched a new interactive map on Thursday that measures the effectiveness of President Barack Obama’s and Governor Mitt Romney’s tweets on a state-by-state basis. This is another election tool, alongside Twitter’s daily polling tool, meant to provide insight into how people are reacting to the presidential candidates on Twitter. However, rather than measuring voter sentiment, as the polling tool does, this looks at how popular the candidates’ individual tweets are in specific locations.

And let’s be real, it’s also an interactive demo meant to show off the company’s big data treasure trove, and ways it can be mined.

But back to the map. It works like this: Click on a state and you can see which tweets were most effective for each candidate there. You also search by keywords (like “unemployment” or “climate”) to see which tweets took off for each man, and in which state. You can also sort to see where candidates did unusually well by clicking on a link to see noteworthy reactions. For example, a Romney tweet on unemployment that said “Today’s increase in the unemployment rate is a blow to struggling middle-class families. Americans deserve better and we can do better” did unusually well for him in Pennsylvania and California.

Twitter tells Wired that the map is not meant to compare which candidate is doing better in which state. Rather, it’s an indicator of how particular messages play in particular places. So, for example, tweets about jobs resonate well for both candidates in Mississippi, where the unemployment rate is 9.2 percent.

It also gets interesting when you look at swing states and start drilling down. For example, Obama has a high engagement level in Ohio, while Romney holds only a medium engagement level. (These are determined by retweets and favorites.) But if you click over to see the tweets that got a noteworthy reaction there, you can see that four of Romney’s top five tweets that had above-average levels of engagement were about jobs. One easy lesson to glean is that tweets that mention issues in specific states do incredibly well in those states. An Obama tweet about the number of middle-class families in Florida that would get a tax hike under Romney was off the charts in terms of noteworthy reactions compared to his other messaging there.

Another interesting tidbit that shows up in the map (and that Twitter was sure to point out) is how engaged people are all over the country. There were dark blues or reds on every state on the map — not just the coasts or in California, as it would have been in 2008.

Again, all the election stuff Twitter is doing is interesting, and certainly it gives people tracking and running the campaigns yet another tool to use. But it’s not done out of civic virtue, or at least not solely for that reason. At the beginning of 2012, Twitter knew that the election and the Olympics were going to dominate the national conversation. And so it began looking for ways to showcase the ways conversations and data would flow across its servers.

Twitter wants to let you know that it can measure how messages work and spread, and what people are thinking and saying, in location-specific ways, even. That it is the place to turn for deep dives into sentiment and reaction and effectiveness. It’s a marketing tool, capable of amplifying messages and driving people to your product, be that an Olympic event, candidate, television show, or new brand of soda.

Google Latitude check-in deals now available across the US

Recently, Google has been busy beefing up Latitude to make it more competitive with other location apps -- and more fun to use. Location history was added recently, iOS users can post check-ins via Latitude, and now Google has begun rolling out location-based deals which are tied to the service.

If you're in the U.S., you can now score local savings at participating merchants by checking in with Latitude. Google will also be offering "status deals," which users can unlock by visiting a particular merchant on a regular basis. Mashable notes three status levels: regular, VIP, and guru -- though partners can apparently customize those titles if they choose.

Right now deals are available from merchants like American Eagle Outfitters, Arby's, Finish Line, Macy's, Quiznos, and RadioShack.

Seagate now a DECE member, supporting UltraViolet

The Digital Entertainment Content Ecosystem -- the consortium of companies attempting to develop an industry standard for digital distribution of entertainment, and the folks behind UltraViolet -- can count another member among its ranks as of this week: digital storage company Seagate. The storage manufacturer announced as much in a press release this week, and threw its support behind UltraViolet. "As a DECE member, Seagate's expertise and perspective on cloud solutions and storage devices will help the organization to evolve those benefits," says UltraViolet GM Mark Teitell. Considering how many major content providers are supporting UltraViolet, it's good to know that one of the largest storage companies isn't standing against our digital futures.
